So maybe we're not as cool as the Apple people, but are there any bad-ass applications that will transform my system into Megatron or anything?

Free or otherwise?
Pretty much all programs for windows are available for mac too.

That is a retarded assumption. That being said, this thread is pretty much redundant to the sticky one.

That's very untrue. I own both and have to use different apps for each. For example, Macs don't get utorrent, etc.

System Mechanic (http://www.iolo.com/) is pretty dandy for this sort of thing.

If you don't like your windows colors, there's a Zune Skin (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/Microsoft-Zune-Theme.shtml) that makes it black and orange (as opposed to silver/green or blue/green). For XP.

Or you could just download uxtheme.dll (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/UXTheme-MultiPatcher.shtml) and get the choice of thousands of skins, rather than be limited to one. Like all these. (http://browse.deviantart.com/customization/skins/windows/visualstyle/?order=9&alltime=yes) Have a look, some of them are really nice.

Or you could disable themes and free up a bit of memory.
The only PC to Megatron converters I've seen are overpriced and don't work very well.

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. Besides, the amount less memory it uses to use Classic than Luna or whatever is just not worth it unless you are very, very tolerant of an ugly os.

Are those all XP? I've been looking for something slightly different for a while, and these would be pretty awesome.

Yep. Just download that app, run it and restart. Then any of those skins will work fine. I'm on Vista now, so I'm content with the gui, but for xp that is the best program I found for skinning, since it uses no more resources than the default theme.

I'm thinking the best utility I've got is CCleaner (Crap Cleaner), its great, cleans out all the registry files, broken links, .dll's that aren't used any more.
I used it on my parents machine (used everyday for 3 years by people who know nothing about pc-housework) and it doubled the efficiency straight off.

you can always get those skins and stuff that changes the look of your OS, but what do you exactly want to do? for example I like 3D graphics and graphic design so I got things like Gmax, Inkscape, The gimp, blender and some other good freeware software.

You could change them manually by right clicking on whatever you're changing, going properties, choose icon, but there's probably a better way, but I don't know it, sorry.

You could use Tweak XP or similar programs which allow you to change all the icons.

Wrong way round. Plus, compilation tools for Mac are a pain in the ass to find. Usually you have to pay more to get something on a Mac.
OK, so you've got GarageBand, iLife, et cetera. But there are a lot more programs for Windows than there are for Mac, mainly because most commercial developers can't be assed coding for anything else, and you're hearing this from someone who primarily uses Linux.
I heard someone get incredibly pissed off because there all the MPEG2 converters for Mac were $500+ or something stupid like that.
Anyways...
Tweak UI is fun; you can even remove your "My Computer" icon, and rename your "Recycle Bin".
I've never used uxtheme.dll, but I've heard it's good. There's also Blackbox, which is a Fluxbox-styled scheme (Unix/X11 window manager), but I'm not sure if that uses uxtheme.dll.
If you want it to run at kickass speed, I suggest getting Spybot Search & Destroy (which removes spyware). But to prevent getting all the nasty shit coming in behind your back, get a firewall.
There's some sexy desktop widgets which are fun to play with, e.g. Newton's Cradle :D
I'm sure there's some other stuff, but I can't be arsed looking right now.
