View Full Version : Talk about crazy fast internet.

CERN have just created an "internet" 10,000 times faster than our current one. (http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/07/cern-creates-a-new-super-fast-internet-invites-tons-of-people-t/)

So it seems with utilizing fiber optic networks and keeping traffic out of our phone and data systems they claim the internet can be 10,000 times faster. Now if this works, they are predicting huge leaps in innovation, things like:

true cloud computing, holographic video conferencing, and really, really fast pirating of the entire Nightmare on Elm Street series.

Well that all sounds fine, but the thing that throws me off is that this is not an ISP. So how exactly is this going to effect your average internet connection? Well anyway it is a really interesting idea, and I am looking forward to see what it will be like.

It's not gonna hit us for decades, right now it's just being used in research.

Also "the grid" is a kickass name.

With that being the case is still seems like a really interesting idea, though I was hoping it was in the near future. Guess this won't be such a big deal when we are all living like the Jetsons.

Sadly, Rob might be right. The first military communication networks were made in the late '50s, and it took something like thirty years for those networks to be opened to businesses, and then the public, to create the Internet as we know it.

Although with the rate at which our understanding of computers has grown in that same amount of time, maybe we'll see this sooner, rather than later.

I would love it if Australia had American-speed internets alone.

In Australia I average around 300kb/s, which is kinda crap compared to what I've seen Americans have.

Is it sad that the first thing that came to mind when I saw how fast it would be was "That'll be some fiiine gaming?"

With my connection at my college I can get about
http://www.speedtest.net/result/199899452.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
This much

Other times I have seen the upload go over 16000kbps

I average about 15,000 down and 5,000 up

Once i got 32,000kbps down with a distance of about 400 miles.

The trouble with most of this new technologies is that they're exactly that; new. They would new to run fibre optics into every home to get that speed, even if they use it to the exchange, the consumer is still limited by their own cable-based line. Would be nice if they could make it cost effective enough to implement though.

Expensive is the most important factor here. That would be a huge deal, and I don't think most people care enough about that kind of upgrade to make it worthwhile at the moment. Connecting the world and whatnot seems more important to me than helping some people get absurdly fast connections. Some areas don't even have broadband access yet.

Matterialize
04-10-2008, 3:49 PM
I'd be willing to pay for it. I pay a bundle for unlimited broadband because I use my internet for a lot of stuff, and if I could get access to those kinds of speeds, I'm pretty sure I'd shell out the extra dough.

Plug your internet cable in and try again. I would die with internet that slow.

At home I have the fastest internet available to Australian residents (costs us a bucket load too). When we first got it I was like, woah that is stupid fast, because Explosm was actually loading as soon as I clicked links. But, from being a nerd and playing WoW, I've discovered my internet still sucks compared to Americans. I'll have to try that site when I get home and see what speeds it gets for me.

As cool as this super fast internet sounds, I'm thinking it'll be a good few decades before we're seeing it.

Oh i thought i posted in here, i guess it was the other forum

Sadly this will be used for a good decade for LHC before it comes into public use.
Even if it were to be used while LHC is operational, it would pretty much be the same as just using the current backbone, LHC data would eat up all the bandwidth. (in fact, i'd go as far as saying there would be practically no available bandwidth)

It is basically similar to the Internet2 grid in the US, private use for now. (limited public access as well if i remember correct)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abilene_Network

I can't wait for it to go public though.
When it hits the public, woohoo! Digital-distribution, here we come!

Edit:
Done a speedtest, always meant to do one of these.

(yes, i did upload my own image of it , i'm going to use it on other sites too)
Just recently switched over to TalkTalk, wish i tested BT now.
I feel that it is slightly better than BTs speeds anyway, but only by a little bit. Seems like a more stable connection overall.

It's complicated to explain. The test really only tells you what you CAN do. But in reality, the most your download speed will be is what the server decides for you. If it's a really craptastic sever, you may get a maximum of 50KB/s download speed, but for others, you could get up to 200, 300, 600, or even 1200KB/s!! But if your internet speed (what you pay for) is lower than that amount, like say Dial-Up, then that's your MAXIMUM capability for downloading/uploading. Also, distance between servers can slow things down, too. As well as how much traffic the server is getting, you see?

Actually, while this is here, if you are in the UK, BT are currently updating the current backbone.
I think it is supposed to be completed either next year or 2010 (not sure again, i think it may have been put back a little)

Also, P0K3M0N_MA5T3R, i'm fairly similar on average. Most of the time i get around 300~ on downloads, highest i have had is around 700~ (mind you, not sure what speeds i get on PS3 and Wii)
Uploads usually around 30 (50-70ish when torrenting at night), highest 100~.
I done a line test with some other site (it apparently uses BTs numbers), and it said i should only get around 1.5Mb speeds at the location i am at, so i'm fairly happy with my speeds for now (just the damn ISPs charging for "upto" 8Mbit speeds)
Guessing from your Speedtest, the hardware around your area might be upgraded this year. (cross your fingers)

Oh god Italy... hey it's still better than nothing.
I remember suffering the days of 56k...

I don't thing they will be able to legally bring this out to the public because it's way too fast, pirating will go crazy. Even if it is released to the public, think of the cost? I think only rich companies and Bill Hates will be able to afford it. I think that when the research is complete and they have it all running the government will buy it off them, like 3D video conferencing could do the government a lot of good, instead of the need to have to fly to every Conference they have.

Pretty fast, but I didn't think that fast :aaa:

I don't really need my internet to be 10,000 times faster, but it would be interesting, nonetheless. Though that kind of technology I would probably have to be at least 70. But then again, with today's technology I wouldn't be surprised if we got it in 20 years.

I dont want to brag... but..

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4820/speedby2.jpg , I used a speed testing server in my country, since that SpeedTest didnt have a server in my country.

If you convert those numbers to those of SpeedTest.net, you get:

91.566 kb/s in download
37.181 kb/s in upload

For some reason the upload speed is pretty low, it should be around 90.000 - 100.000 kb/s too, but hey, you cant win them all :P

I cant see the point in having 10.000 times faster internet though, the computer Im on right now barely handles my connection, so if you have a connection that can transfer terabytes of data per second, you sure as hell would need to invest in a hell of a computer to be able to read and write the data at that speed.
