Can you import DVDs into iTunes?
Spastic
07-09-2008, 7:36 PM
Most of the time you need third party software to do that, and even then you have to remove the copy protection most DVDs have, which I think is illegal.
MrDoctor
07-09-2008, 7:59 PM
I don't think it illegal to remove it as long as you don't sell or distribute the dvds.
Beefynick
07-09-2008, 8:44 PM
Legally you can import DVD's into iTunes, but they have to be your DVD's. If you own the DVD it is legal to rip it, but if you are ripping a DVD that a friend owns then it becomes illegal.
There are many programs out there to rip DVD's, just do a google search. Since they can be used for illegal activities I will refrain from talking about them here.

Is there any way to stop the interrupts that Comcast uses to stop downloads? It fucks up the connection for games, and is just really annoying in general. (I don't think it's illegal)

That's your ISP choking your connection I think, and if that's the case the only solution is to switch providers.

If I buy a laptop from Dell with 4GB of RAM, will it recognize all the RAM if it's Vista 32x SP1? I was told SP1 fixes the problem that won't allow it to recognize all the memory.

Vista SP 1 should read all the memory. Now whether it utilizes it or not is a different story. If you are buying the laptop with the memory already installed from the 4GB of memory then you can be sure that the bios will recognize the memory and use it. If you are upgrading the memory yourself you are not guaranteed that it will work.
32 bit windows has a limitation of 4 GB of ram. Basically Windows will never use all 4GB of ram but with SP1 it will use more of it that without SP1.
Spastic, there is no Vista SP2.

My laptop seems to idle at 4cpu usage. It's like 4 is actually zero.
Is this actually anything to worry about it, or could it mean that the processor has errors in it?

A piece of hardware can't really have errors in it, and processors are very sensitive, so it would probably be completely fucked if there was any hardware problem with it. Windows is probably indexing or something, hence the 4% usage. See if it goes away in a few days.

I concur with the possibility of Windows indexing. When you are idle you have to remember that there are programs still running in the background, so they can be using the processor. It is not uncommon for a processor that is idle to be using up to 7%.

My 3 month trial of Norton is about to run out. I now have a choice between Sophos (which I get free from college) or any of the free antivirus programmes (avast, avg, whatever) you tech savvy people know about.
I'd tend to lean towards Sophos because I have this belief that software that you pay for (though technically I won't be the one paying for it) is probably better than free stuff. But I'm a newb. Would I be better with one of the free programmes I've heard so many great things about? If so, which one?
Advice would be nice :)

What's the average 'lifespan' of a ~$1600/1700 laptop these days? I plan on buying one for university but I'm worried it's not going to last long enough.
Beefynick
07-20-2008, 9:59 AM
The lifespan for a laptop depends on how hard you use it. I have a cheap $600 one that has lasted me 4 years and would have lasted longer than that if I did not want to upgrade. As long as you do not drop your laptop or do anything to damage it, a $1600 or $1700 laptop will last a good long time.

Guys, I just bought a new hard drive and did a clean install of everything on it. I was planning to turn my old 500GB into an external, but I still have files on it. Okay, next question:
I'm trying to put together a simple movie project, but Windows Movie Maker keeps crashing. And when it stopped crashing, all of the videos I published came out as solid black screens. No video whatsoever, just black for the duration of the whole thing. I've read that this is sometimes an issue with huge project files, but at the moment I'm just using it to crop the useful parts out of a 37-second stream of raw footage and it can't even handle that.
What's a good alternative to WMM? It doesn't have to be free, but I want the same, simple interface that WMM has.

Do you think it would be better to replace all of the 256 chips with 512 ones?

Yes, that would also be a good alternative, like I said so long as they are the same size and speed it will work out A whole lot better than mixing. Though I think the two 1GB chips could be cheaper.
Only if it is CD-RW.
Okay. In the Media player, it plays the cd, but the "burn" tab says "insert blank cd". It's not accepting it as a "Blank". Is there a trick or am I just sol on this one?

OK so when my computer crashes from my crappy built in graphics chip it usually just restarts normally and everything is dandy. But every few times (1/15) when I restart my computer Firefox is reset for some reason. It loses my homepage and makes it the welcome to Firefox one. It goes back to default theme, and deletes all my Sxipper and Ad block stuff. So any reason to why this is happening and ways to fix it?

Well the configuration file that handles all that is located in your user folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\. So im guessing its corrupting something in there. You should probably get a new graphics card anyways. they're not that expensive and are worth it.

1. Make a text field and put your text in it.
2. Select it. (There should be a blue box around it)
3. Press ctrl+b until the blue box is gone. Your letters are now raw artwork.

There are many fixes out there for this but none of them work permanently. One thought is to uninstall flash and reinstall it. That worked for me (at least for a month or two). Another thing that can be done is going into Tools/Options/Content and clicking the box next to "Enable Java." I know a few people this has worked for so it is worth a shot, but it just seems like a problem we have to deal with until there is a fix.

Okay. Really stupid question, but hopefully a really easy fix. As I'm sure you know, when you plug a laptop in, the screen brightens. Mine stopped doing that. So, to be perfectly clear, when I plug in the power cord, my screen stays dim, when it should brighten. I've looked everywhere I can think of to up the brightness, but it's not helping. Also, I've tried setting it to "High Performance", and still nothing. The cord is plugged in all the way, as it's charging and the light around the outlet is on. So, hopefully I just overlooked something very simple. I'm using Vista, and this (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Usage&v1=Travel%2Fmobility&series_name=tx2500z_series) is my computer, if that matters. So i've recently somehow gained this nice little program called Instafinder that didn't want to go away. I've since deleted it using the add/remove programs menu, but doing so while I had a search open looking for instafinder files. There were 9 to begin with, and upon deletion, 2 survived.
Their file locations are in C:\Windows\Prefetch. One file name is 'INSTAFINDER.EXE-25FCFB40.pf', and the other is 'INSTAFINDERK_INST.EXE-36A48B29.pf'. Would it be harmful to delete them from my computer? I'd imagine not, but I get scared deleting random files.

Post Boost is when you deliberately make post after post (shitty filler posts) to get your post number higher. If a mod catches you, you'll get a time out.
Permabanned = Permabanned. Like, for good. Unless you somehow manage to come back. I think it's happened only a small number of times (besides the time that one of the mods went crazy and permabanned a whole bunch of members).

It depends on what the files are. Sometimes the files can still be part of the problem with the spyware and sometimes they are deliberately left on there making it easier for the spyware to reinstall itself. You are most likely ok with the files still left on there, but I would remove them if at all possible.

I've been having some issues with my laptop lately, mainly it crashing. Now it crashes so fast that I never have time to read it, but here's what I've gathered. It's a blue screen with white text, and it says Windows detected something and is shutting down to prevent damage to my computer. It also says to make sure all hardware is properly installed, etc. At the end, it says "Dumping physical memory". It's totally random when it happens, too. The first time it happened (months ago) I thought my computer was too hot, but now it happens at any time. The other day, it crashed every time I started up, but it always restarts, too. Then I let it do a disk check that took near 5 hours, it still kept crashing. I did a system restore to before the problem and cleaned up my computer, but it's still crashing (just not as frequently). What the hell is wrong with it?
I'm using Windows Vista on a Gateway MT6705.

Before we can tell you what is causing a memory dump, we need the error code from the blue screen. Follow these instructions to view the blue screen:
-Right-Click on "My Computer", and click "Properties" from the context menu that appears.
- Click "Advanced System Settings"
-Click on "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery".
-Uncheck the box labeled "Automatic Restart".
You will have to hold the power button for 5 seconds to turn the computer off once you get the error code. When you have the error code we can begin to tell you what is wrong.

Do I need to wait for it to crash again, or will turning it off my holding down the power button give me the error code?

Yes, you will have to wait for it to crash again. What Beefy told you to do is making it so your computer won't restart after it crashes, so you have enough time to write down the error code.
Post it here and let someone find out what the problem is, or you could google it yourslef, chances are there will be hundreds of people who have had the same problem. I would also get something called "Ultimate Boot CD" and run a memory test, I'm thinking it's bad RAM.

Okay. I have two images saved on my computer. One is an actual picture of something, on a black background. I made a word art image with red writing, and I need a program that will allow me to lay the writing over the image, without the WordArt box just blocking the image. I hope someone gets what I'm saying.

If the WordArt image has a transparent background, not a white one, you can layer them in paint using copy/paste. On the left hand menu there's two picture boxes, one with a white box, one without, make sure the one without is clicked. Otherwise, the long way of doing this would be to put them both into Microsoft Word, layer them, screenshot & save it as a picture file?
Otherwise, do you actually have any art style programs on your computer?

No, just paint. But I think that'll work. I don't really do enough stuff like this to warrant buying or downloading anything else. Thanks for the help!

That's ok. Downloading is illegal anyone :gj:
Plus, you can pretty much do anything in paint. I have photoshop on my computer at home (yes it's legit) and I still use paint for anything basic.
Is there any free alternative to PhotoShop? I'm not saying like a pirated photoshop but a legitimate freeware program.

A better memory tester is memtest86. It can fit on either a CD or Floppy.
There are many causes for bsods but the most common are 1. Like above, bad RAM 2. Bad drivers (have you updated/installed anything recently) 3. Corrupt windows files (like dlls and such)
next time you do have a bsod, write down the stop code and compare it to here:

I just got a LG UX260 cell phone. The manual says that the phone accepts micro SD cards up to 4 GB. However, micro SD cards supposedly don't go beyond 2 GB. At 4 GB and up there are SDHC cards. Would a SDHC card work with my phone? I've only been to gather sketchy answers myself, as retailers, being just as confused, often mislabel the cards.

Its kind of tricky. There are 4GB normal SD cards, but they don't always work with either SD or SDHC devices. I would guess if your phone does not specifically say it supports SDHC, it probably doesn't.

67 posts? I can start threads in other topics, though.
Two more questions. What is circle jerking (not literally i mean in a thread)?
And if permabanned is permanent, then why does it say some people got permabanned in the event log for only one day?
CharlieH
08-14-2008, 8:57 PM
OK
1) Circle jerking is when someone says something about you, and you start saying, "oh, Matt said my animation was great" all the time. Similar to blowing your own trumpet, but there has to be more than one person involved.
2) When mods choose between a TO and a permaban, they still have to chose the amount of time it's for, regardless.
I suppose it's good that you are asking all of these questions, but stop doing it here. If you have anymore, PM me. Chances are, i'll know the answers. If i don't know, i can point you in the direction of someone who can.

It's probably just dirty or have a loose connection somewhere. Trying blowing into it or brushing it out with a clean paintbrush. If that doesn't help, get some computer dude to look at the connections.

If you're curious about what program a file belongs to, you can look up the file extension at filext.com (http://www.filext.com) (that's one E). In this case, .ram and .rmvb are both Realplayer format. Like Desert said, you can get either VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org) or, in case VLC doesn't play it properly, Realplayer (http://www.realplayer.com.au/).
I said VLC first because it's better than Realplayer will ever be.
I'll attempt to interpret your figure of speech. Yes, you can give them to your friend and he can play them so long as he has VLC or Realplayer. Yes, you can put them in a ZIP archive - there is nothing you cannot put in a ZIP archive.
If neither of those were what you meant, then you use some pretty ambiguous language.

I've been having some problems with the USB ports on my Mac Mini (1st gen). One of the ports doesn't seem to work with anything at all, and the other will read my keyboard/mouse, my printer, and my USB hub, but not my flash drive or memory card reader. So, what the hell's going on, and how can I fix it?
I have a 1.6GHz processor and as of right now; when I'm not doing a damn thing, when I hit Control+Alt+Delete it says I'm using up 100% of my CPU; should I get a new processor? Also, what's BIOS? What would I need to do to change out my processor? Is installing a graphics card easy? What's would I need to know? I know my port type, but, what else should I look for? And how can I tell if I need a new power supply? Also, why the fuck am I running so many processes? I have like anywhere between 55-60 at any given time. I know I don't need them all, but, how do I know which ones I do and don't need? Also, how do Quad-cores work? I know they're better than duos, but what would be better for gaming, like a 2.0GHz quad, or a 2.6 duo? And how easy is it to install a processor? I heard you have to buy new hardware per CPU that corresponds with it; is that true? How can you tell what corresponds with what, or can you?
EDIT: Forget the 100% part; it's down to like 5%. Considering that, should I still get a new processor? I use this computer for games and what not, so I'd think so.
EDIT2: My friend is going to help me with the graphics card

A FUCKLOAD OF QUESTIONS
I'll start off by saying that you're concerned about a lot of things you shouldn't be, and you're in way over your head with the rest of it. I'm going to tell you here and now (and a few more times as I progress) that you don't know what you're doing - that's not an insult, that's just how it is. When it comes to hardware, if you don't know exactly what you're doing, you do not do it.
Q: I have a 1.6GHz processor and as of right now; should I get a new processor? ... I use this computer for games and what not, so I'd think so.
A: NO. Fuck no. Graphics cards come with their own processor, they do not use your CPU. You don't need to upgrade your CPU to play games at all. In fact, your current processor (plus a decent graphics card) should be more than enough for just about anything you might want to do. You don't (and probably never will) need a new CPU or power supply. Computer technology's advanced to the point right now where our computers can handle virtually anything the average user would want to do, so there's very little need to upgrade your computer (CPU, graphics cards, RAM etc) nowadays.
I'm answering your other CPU questions right at the bottom.
Q: How can I tell if I need a new power supply?
A: A faulty or stretched-out power supply can mean your computer doesn't start up right, or at all. Your power supply is fine and will still be fine for years to come.
If you experience problems with your computer I suggest you seek out some kind of tech support, rather than suddenly deciding "oh, it must be the power supply." Chances are you'll never need to get a new power supply ever.
Q: Why the fuck am I running so many processes? I have like anywhere between 55-60 at any given time. I know I don't need them all, but, how do I know which ones I do and don't need?
A: Heaps of processes is normal, don't worry about it. Right now I have 94 running and my computer's fine. I could probably take several hundred more and so could you.
Every process is vital in some way - otherwise they wouldn't be running - so don't close one unless you've got a good reason and you know exactly which one to close. A process could be a part of Windows, or a part of a program you're running (including the ones running in the background, such as security software).
Closing a process (even a Windows one) won't destroy your computer but it could mean your computer won't work properly. Restarting your computer will reload the vital processes.
Q: How do Quad-cores work? I know they're better than duos, but what would be better for gaming, like a 2.0GHz quad, or a 2.6 duo?
A: A graphics card would be better for gaming. Just making absolutely certain that's sunk in by this point.
Anyway, a single processor can only do one thing at a time (no matter how fast it is). So by using several processors at once, multicores can do several things at once, making them a ton faster than single-cores. A quad-core would be CONSIDERABLY faster than any dual-core with a similar speed - I don't know the specifics though. In your case, that quad-core would be much faster. But remember you don't need it.
Q: What's BIOS?
A: The BIOS is a vital part of the computer, though it's only used in the start-up process. It's responsible for starting up the operating system as well as turning on the de. Don't screw around with it (that also means, you don't need a new one, and you never will).
Now to the other processor questions. I'm not giving you advice on how to replace your CPU because most people shouldn't even attempt it.
Q: Gow easy is it to install a processor?
Installation itself is simple enough if you know exactly what you're doing (you don't). It's finding the right processor you have to worry about screwing up.
Q: I heard you have to buy new hardware per CPU that corresponds with it; is that true? How can you tell what corresponds with what, or can you?
CPUs can only be plugged into motherboards with comptaible ports (just like how it is with graphics cards and ports). No, each CPU doesn't come with its own exclusive motherboard. A motherboard can be compatible with a lot of CPUs. However, there are a LOT of ways CPUs can be different from one another so 90% of the time, a CPU won't be compatible with your motherboard. I'm not giving you advice on buying a new CPU or anything.

Hah, thanks. I won't deny this is new to me, but, I guess I really don't know what I'm doing, and that's why I called the guy who built my computer.
You certainly cleared up a lot that was uncertain, but, what does a processor do? I've heard that they do help, and yet I've heard that they do from pretty much the same amount of people/places.
Why is that?
Also, say a video card has a minimum wattage suggestion; is that what the card uses itself, or just so that the entire computer will have power?

Yeah, that's what I pretty much picked up last night just searching around. Honestly, I think I'll just save my money up and wait 'til I get into school and actually learn what the hell I'm doing, how to put the pieces together, and how to get the right pieces. I mean, I'd rather get everything that's at least pretty decent than just one good part that isn't going to run as effectively as all the good pieces put together.
EDIT: Another reason I want another CPU is not just for gaming; I don't want my computer to freeze up. Also, like I said before with the Control+Alt+Delete, I run my CPU up pretty easy even when I'm just like doing shit online.

Well it finally crashed when I plugged in my camera, and it said these three things (among other stuff) which seemed important:
KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR
***STOP: 0x0000007 (0x00000001, 0x00EEEEEE, 0x00000000, 0xA9F3BBC8)

I have a Celeron too. Chances are you have the older socket (478) which only goes up to Pentium 4. The newer cpus use socket 775.
btw how much ram do you have. Also, if you want a temporary boost, you can use an acceleration app such as Hare (http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/hare/index.html). (Note: its shareware, but if you know what to do, it isn't anymore)
Hi there, I'm just wondering: What's a good, CHEAP (emphesis on cheap) graphics card that can run the recommended system requirements for Team Fortress 2?
edit: Also, how does one work garry's mod? Is it basically a more complicated version of Forge from Halo 3 or does it require you to know codes 'n shit like that. Cause I'm not good with codes (I was planning to purchase this with TF2 but if It's way to complicated I don't know)

Actually, as far as I know, I have a 775 according to my motherboard booklet, unless I'm reading it wrong. And, I have 2 gigs.

This isn't really true. Any game with physics will utilise the cpu a lot, and every game will utilise it to an extent. Saying you will never need a new cpu is just wrong, because a 1.6ghz cpu is slow now, and with more and more complex applications coming out, it will just get worse.

That's kind of what I was thinking, but, is getting the right processor with the correct socket the only part, or is there more to it? I mean, come on guys, I'm going into a tech school for computers, I'm not completely uninformed.

Garry's Mod is basically a physics bot. You choose the map you want, and then ragdolls and you can position them as you please. It's a bit difficult at first but once you get used to the physics gun it is pretty fun.
There are no codes at all, it basically runs like your average steam game.
As for the graphics card, they are all pretty cheap these days. How much were you looking to spend? I got a standard 9600GT for about $150AU, which is the latest generation of nvidia graphics cards. I can turn everything up to max.
Also make sure your graphics card will be compatible with your motherboard.

Right well I'm not up-to-date on CPU speeds then. But really, technology these days is advancing faster than games companies can keep up with it. They might be able to push it to their limits, but what game other than Crysis has a team who actually wants to go to all that trouble? He'll have to replace his CPU maybe once with a slightly faster one and then that's that, he'll be set for quite a few years.
Werty, AFTER you get your graphics card and try it out, if you're still certain you want to replace your CPU there's probably some good buying/installation guides on the internet (I might be able to help you out with some searching). You should go for a multicore if at all possible but I've no idea if they're compatible with motherboards which came with non-multicore CPUs (probably not).

If a motherboard has an LGA775 slot, it will be compatible with the newer intel CPUs (Core Duo, etc.). Doesn't matter if it came with a multicore one or not (Since the last Pentium 4/Celeron family CPUs also used LGA775.)
The best way to tell if you have LGA775 is to remove your processor and look at the socket on your motherboard, if it has holes in it, it is an older Socket 478. If it has pins protruding from the motherboard, it is 775.
So, all I need to do is just get a processor, replace the old one, maybe get a new fan, and I'm pretty much set? Minus all the cords and programs.

HAHAHAAHAHAHA
1. It depends what version of Vista you're running
2. I Have Windows Ultimate 64bit on my laptop (It came with home preium) When I First had it, it had roughly 70+ Processes Running. Then I put ultimate on it and all the programs I need (its my work computer) I have it down to 37 processes when I first start up. Most of the processes is just shit that HP, Dell, Compaq etc...put on there. Granted I did a little more tweaking in MSCONFIG. Half the programs that start up you don't even need to initially start your computer. Some applications like MSN Messenger, Zune/Itunes etc...These applications dont even open up immediately when you log on, they are just using up space when you are first logging on.
3. Know what you NEED to start up first or what you could just open up later.

The Ghz rating, think as a transfer speed.
For newer games like Crysis you NEED a good processor
I run a 8600 GTS, it can handle the graphics of Crysis pretty well. But my computer has crashed due to my processor being the minimum that crysis can play on
Overall, Yes Graphics Cards are nice for making a game smoother but processors for intense gaming are a must
OK, another TF2 question. I didn't get my graphics card yet, but when I play TF2 on the PC, even on the lowest graphics setting (lower than my recommended), I get really scratchy gameplay. Like, it is not smooth at all. If someone is attacking me from behind I'm dead because I can't turn around smooth/quickly enough. It's not lag, because I have some other online PC games that don't require as much graphically(ie: Halo) and it runs fine even when there's tons of stuff on the screen. (Also that can it run it website said I was half way between minimum and recommended) Whjat the hell!

Since I got the 9600 I haven't had any problems at all. I love it to pieces. I can also turn all the graphics to max and it doesn't struggle at all. To be honest, you might be better off with an 8800. They're a lower series, but higher end, and usually they're only a bit more expensive. Don't get me wrong, the 9600 is a good card, but, you might be able to get better FPS and overall gameplay with an 8800. Also, make sure you know your port type; i.e. AGP, or a PCI or a PCIe. If it's a relatively new computer, you'll probably have a PCIe, but if it's not, then you might have a problem.

Yep, you got it. I was going to get an 8800 because I thought it would be cheaper but they are the same price.
As far as I know, a high-end 8 series is better than a mid-end 9 series. I could be wrong, and I could be right; but either way I'm getting an 8800 'cause my friend's selling me one, but, I guess if you don't plan on overclocking('cause it's not worth the risk) then I don't think it would matter which one you chose.

There's very little risk in overclocking a graphics card if your temps are alright and you don't try to overclock it unreasonably.

It's [ youtube ] [ /youtube ]. And you have to put the video ID in the middle. As in, the video ID of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhhzwjt2AG0 would be nhhzwjt2AG0.

Improperly shutting down your PC can cause problems. It will terminate anything you have in memory so if a program is updating it may be corrupted or if you are working on a document it may not be saved.

Not much unless you do it right as you're in the middle of saving a huge file or flashing an mp3 player's firmware or something. Nine times out of ten it won't cause any damage to anything, but you're still better off shutting down properly if you can.

I suggest the 8800. They're a reasonable price(only $140 now), and they're just as good as the 9600; however, if you're looking for something to last you a few years, instead of like, 2-3, and yo have the extra $50, I'd get the 9800.
EDIT: Nevermind. The 9800 is more or less the same as a good 8800. I still suggest getting the 8800 though 'cause you get a better core clock and memory clock for the same price.

Could you elaborate in some detail your answers? For instance, how pronounced will the graphical difference be? How will this difference show itself (e.g. slower frame rates, etc.)
Intel 2.4GHz (can't quite remember the model and the machine is in the shop at the moemnt)
2GB RAM
270 GB hard drive
The resolution I would expect to be playing at would be 1440x900
The games I definitely don't want to be missing out on would be GTA IV for PC, Starcraft II and Empire Total War, I'm hoping to upgrade it once and for all and not be bothered by having to upgrade for at least 3-4 years.

All the core clock and memory clock shit, I honestly don't know, all I know is that higher is better; but I doubt that a .1GHz is going to make the difference between playing on full settings and lowest settings. However, if you're treating it like that(not wanting to build one for a few years) then I would personally get a much better one; i.e. instead of dropping $150, spend like $200-250. Differences like that will often be very pronounced.
EDIT: Here's a few I found on Newegg. They'll run you like a few bucks over $200, but they'll be waaaay worth the cash.

The first one is better just because it's core clock is 750, and memory clock at 2.3GHz, while the other two are like 2.2 mem and 650 or so core.

Okay. My dads laptop won't turn on. Last night, it was at like 15 percent power, and noone plugged it in, so I'mm 99% positive the battery died. When I plug in the charger, it lights up like it does when it's charging, but it still won't turn on. Do we need a new battery, or is there something else we can do?
Thats weird, batteries shouldn't die just like that, unless they're really old. If it doesn't turn on after charging, which I see you did, it may be some other problem. Have you tried removing the battery, plugging it in and then trying to get it to work? Since some laptops work without batteries when they're plugged in.
Then I'm stumped. :S
Was it showing any symptoms until it suddenly stopped working.
It wasn't. It's the strangest thing I've ever heard. Thanks for the input though.

Yeah. This one's barely 6 months old. I tried the no battery thing, and nothing. Also, I tried a different battery, but I'm not sure it's good either, so that really did nothing. Damn. Looks like it's going to the shop. I'm going to be pissed when I pay $100 to find out it just needed something simple.
EDIT: How would I know if it's the power button not working? It feels kind of weird when I push it, but I may just be grasping at straws.
Try turning up the brightness. That might be the problem, you never know. Other than that, no, just let it charge up for a bit and if it still doesn't turn on call the manufacturer.

Give it a whack on the left hand side next to the touchpad, that's how I fixed my laptop when it used to occasionally shit itself.
I'm deadly serious as well, there was something about hitting it there that fixed the majority of my 'refusal to start up' problems.

Isn't that where the hard drive is? So hitting it would be a bad thing, right?

Ercoledi is right. Don't hit your electronic stuff.
If the power button does indeed feel strange to push, then it might be there it a loose connection in there. Take it to the shop. Opening anything yourself will void the warranty.

Or you can blast it with some compressed air first, sometimes junk will get in it and not let you push all the way down.
I have an external USB keyboard, but I don't have the install disc that came with it. Is there any way to use it anyway?
On a laptop, do the keys pop off like regular keyboards, or do they just break?
I have a USB mouse, and for some reason my computer likes to freeze (music still plays, but everything else stops) when I plug it in. Help.

I have a question. When I want to play on my 360, I put the disk in, it reads it and says "To play this game, put it in a 360 console", or something along those lines. Then I have to open and close the disk tray like 30 times before it starts working. Any of you guys know what the problem is?

Your 360 DVD drive is bad. You can try cleaning the lens but that is not guaranteed to work. You may end up putting a new DVD drive in the 360.
The other possible problem is that you have a bad dashboard update, but that is not usually the case since 99% of the time it will not boot if that is the case. There are ways to reset a dashboard update and if you want to try them let me know and I can post how to do it.
I just got my CPU, and it has what I think are thermal pads on the bottom of the HSF; how can I be sure?

I would check the manufacturer's website or the instruction manual if it came with one (I know some of the older ones did not). If there is a gray pad on the bottom of the fan then you are probably ok. Touch it and see if it feels like a pad.
To be guaranteed though check the instruction manual/ manufacturer's website.

Usually the install disc has the drivers on it, so if you can find them online you should be fine. Just google your brand of keyboard and drivers and you should be fine. Make sure it's from a legit site, too.
Not sure about the laptop keyboard thing. As for the mouse, does your computer come up with anything about plugging a high speed device into a low speed port? If your laptop is a bit old, the port can't support new-ish usb products. Maybe try a different mouse if you have one around.

What kind of DVD drive does your 360 have? My guess is that it is a Hitachi in which case opening it and replacing the lens would not be too hard.

Yeah it probably is. How much would replacing the lens cost?
Beefynick
09-05-2008, 5:00 PM
It will cost anywhere from $10-$30 USD for the lens. It should take an inexperienced person anywhere from an hour to two hours to replace the lens.
Well, I installed my CPU, but had to take it out; my computer kept freezing during boot up. Why is that?
Also, my GPU was causing it to lock up even worse, and would distort colors. Anyone know why that is also? I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the PSU, but the CPU problem I'm at a loss for.
EDIT: Solved the CPU problem; guess I need to update my BIOS, but I'm not risking it, I'll just wait til I get my new mobo.
EDIT2: Can you remove thermal pads from a CPU with acetone? That's what I've been hearing, but, mine's already half melted on there; will it still work?

So for Christmas I get a new computer (hurrah!). It's meant to be for school work but I really want one that can play recent games. Nothing like a maxed out Crysis, but so it won't lag every 5 seconds and look like ass.
There's one I was looking at that's on sale or something which has the specs I was looking for.
Intel Core2Quad Q6600. (Is there a real difference between a quad core and a dual core?)
4GB RAM.
640GB Hard Drive.
nVidia NX8400GS.
The main thing I'm looking for info on is the graphics card. Do any of you own one? If so, how does it perform? The whole lot comes with a 24" monitor, Logitech R-10 speakers, Vista Home Premium and keyboard and mouse for $1800. Is this a good price? I'm going to keep looking around about I'm pretty happy with this.
Any info/advice/warnings are appreciated. Thanks.

Question: Is it possible to add RAID1 to a system without completely formatting the first drive?
My mum wants me to make her computer secure now that she's running a business from it, but its an old PC, so its got alot of data on the primary drive. I wanna put in a second backup drive, but I can't afford to loose the data on the first drive.
And to Cheese: If you were to convert dollars to English that sounds like a great deal, but I'm not sure what tech prices are like in the US. If I payed £1000 for that I'd be really quite happy.

I think there is software out there that claims you can do this but it is not reliable. From what I understand you have to enable RAID on drive formatting. What you may consider is setting the new drive up as a slave drive and forget the RAID array. Another option would be an external drive for backup.
Do XBOX 360 games from America work on Europe machines?
No. In Europe the standard format is PAL and in the US is is NTSC. These are not compatible formats. There are some people who have managed to get the PAL games to work on NSTC, but the quality was not great. If you have a US game try sticking it in your 360, but I would not suggest buying one.

My dad was trying to get his contact list from his old phone to his new one via old phone -->computer-->new phone. We looked around the internet for ideas, but we didnt find anything. He seems kind of hell bent on making this work. We're on Verizon, and we bought USB cord to get music from your computer to your phone, but I think its only for music. If anyone knows if you CAN use the cord to get anything else on to the computer, or if you know how we can get the contacts transferred, Itd be a great help.

Depends on the phone, the only ones that get contacts off the computer I know of are Blackberries/smart phones.
Also, does Verizon use SIM cards? If it does, you can just store all your contacts on the card and transfer it between phones.

I'm certainly not an expert, but, depending on what you mean by "recent" games (E:TW, SCII, GTAIV for PC) an 8400GS will almost definitely not be enough, especially if you have to play it at a high res for your big monitor.

The cable is a data cable so you should be able to (should being the key word here because there are always exceptions). There are programs out there that allow for transfer of information from one phone to another. A quick google search should turn up a few. If the phones have bluetooth you should consider transferring the contacts via bluetooth.

In my growing attempts to become even more sedentary, I'm looking for a wireless keyboard + mouse combo. What's good, and what should I avoid?
Should I get Vista? I've heard it's great for gaming because it's 64-bit and DirectX10 compatible; but, does anyone have any advice? Is it worth it? If you have it, do you like it? How much different is it from XP?
Beefynick

Vista is not too much different than XP. The layout takes a little getting used to and so does he User Account Control popping up. Frankly if you can get it cheaply I would look into it. If you are going to pay full price I would probably advise against it.
I have Vista as it was installed on my laptop. I thought about going back to XP but I figured that I payed for Vista in the price of my laptop and kept it. I like it for the most part. I use Ubuntu more than Vista, but I have no problems with Vista.

Vista for me is alright if you can take care of a computer at all. I've only had a few issues and it probably comes back to me due to a bad download or something. Any computer, any OS, can be fine if you understand it and how to compensate for the odd things.
If you're going to game, then Vista would be great to optimize. But personally, I think XP can do just as good.

What do I do with and, more importantly, will it surround me with the luscious sounds of Prokofiev?

Your best bet for .ape files is to convert them to .mp3 files. They are music files with no loss of sound from the source and file. If you are an audiophile you can download a program to play them, but I would suggest converting them.

Okay. I know this is a stupid question, but I still need to ask it. If I use a proxy, specifically Anonymouse (http://anonymouse.org/anonwww.html), then will my entire internet session from that point be anonymous, or does it just work for the one site, or what. Also, will I have to go back to the proxy with every new tab I open?

If you connect to a proxy by actually changing the settings in your browser then you will be anonymous from the time you enter the proxy address until you remove it or the proxy is offline. With anonymouse, you are only "protected" with that one address you enter. You would have to go back to anonymouse every time you wanted to browse a site "anonymously" (and I use that in quotations because usually online proxies are not that secure and thus data can be traced back to you.)
mohaas05

You usually don't need proxies anyways unless you're doing something worth tracking you for (such as child porn (I hope that's not it)).

Verizon offers a back up assistant plan, where you pay $2 a month, and it saves your contact list online for you. Pretty cheap, and great idea if you're constantly switching phones, or losing/breaking yours.

Kay this is hard to describe but it's really irritating. Whenever I close over my laptop without turning it off, it goes into hibernation, which is fine. But when I start it up again, my screen looks all stretched out and blurry and weird. Like this (http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd3/eeepha/Untitled-15.jpg). There's a scrolly bar at the end of the screen and and everything on the start bar is about twice as big as usual and it irritates me.

Sounds like your resolution is getting messed up. You can fix it by right clicking on your desktop, clicking personalise, then display settings, then dragging the slider under 'resolution' to the right.

Probably a 9800GTX for GeForce; ATI I Don't know the names; a good processor, but, I wouldn't go over board with a quad unless you really want one; you'd probably be fine with the E8400. The motherboard you just want to make sure has a 775LGA Socket for the processor and PCIe 16 2.0 for the GPU; also, don't buy anything cheap. The cheaper, the shorter you'll have it. As for the power supply, you'd be fine with a 600w-650w unless you're SLIing, and even then that might be enough to sustain it.
Lastly comes your OS; with Vista you get Direct x10, but with XP you get a more reliable OS and more drivers, but, to be honest, I would still go with Vista because they'll eventually work the bugs out me thinks.
That would be what I would go with for parts, for the case just get a mid-size tower or a full size if you want lots of room.

I'm sorry but I can't understand that at all. I kind of get where you're going but I don't know where I'd find all this. I mean a computer that you can just buy as a package which is good for gaming.
I wouldn't just buy a computer; I'd suggest building your own because you save money and you know exactly what you're getting. If you want somewhere to look for hardware, I suggest either Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) or Newegg (www.newegg.com).
Also, they've got computers that you can buy prebuilt on Newegg, for a fact, but I'm not sure about Tom's.
By the way, when you're cleaning the thermal paste or whatever you wanna call it off your CPU, does it have to be spotless, or can there be a few areas that you can't get?
