Not sure if it's been said already but I was wondering how and how often I should clean the inside of my computer? Like dust and stuff. I keep finding that I'm shocking when it comes to this and I'm not sure if certain things would wreck it if I used it (like using vaccum type machines on it or touching certain parts).

Also how many times should it get done? Or do you just look inside and check every so often?

Get a can of compressed air and blow it out. You can get them at most good computer shops.

If your computer is getting a bit noisy it usually just means the fan is dusty, and that is when it needs a clean. You don't even need compressed air, a vacuum cleaner above the fan works just fine too ;)

I'm upgrading my video card soon and want to know something. I'm thinking about getting this (http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_info.php?cPath=91&products_id=116495) card but my power supply is only 300W.

Will it work, and if not is there any other video cards I can get with this power supply that can play modern games (Left 4 Dead and TF2 etc.)? I really don't want to upgrade it.

It is never going to hurt to clean the insides of your computer out but I am willing to bet that most people do not. I only clean mine out when I go in to replace something or add something new. Frankly, if you are worried about the dust and such I would say clean it out once a year or so.

Your best bet for cleaning it would be compressed air. You can use a vacuum as long as it does not touch any parts (i.e. cleaning dust off the bottom of the case).

Ah, thanks guys. Yeah I wasn't too sure about if a vacuum would damage it, but I guess if I do what you said it should be fine.

I brought this up because with my old ass computer I had a few years back broke down on me one time so I got my friend to have a look at it for me. When he opened it up he described the inside as "a layer of carpet", referring to all the dust build up. Don't really want a repeat of that. Thanks for the tips.

My family got a Samsung LCD TV for my mother for Christmas. The only place will she will not find it, is in my closet. The only way it will fit in there, though, is if it is stored on it's side. Will it be okay for the next 8 days, or would it be better to find a new spot. It is still in it's original packaging, for those wondering.

Should be fine though if its still in its packaging.

You could try, but I really doubt it will work properly, a quick google implies it needs at least a 400w psu.

You might be able to get a 9600gt working (works on my 375w psu but it isn't recommended, but for anything better you'll probably have to look at a new psu.

What's the difference between Open Office and Microsoft Office?

Ercoledi
12-18-2008, 9:37 PM
The important difference? One is free.

Other than that, they're both similar in usability and you can work between the two with little to no hassles. As for what one has that the other doesn't, Microsoft Office has grammar check, and has support for macros. OpenOffice has the benefit of basically being simpler - take that as you will.

opn4bzns
12-19-2008, 12:52 AM
OpenOffice is free but pretty bad in usability, compatibility and stability compared to Office, especially 2007. But if you need an office suite and have no money, it's probably your best choice.

Denatured alcohol is a good way to remove oil marks from keyboards. You can use window cleaner but I suggest using window cleaner without ammonia as if you were to get it on the screen ammonia can screw up a LCD screen.

You can use windows cleaner without ammonia. Ammonia can damage a LCD screen. As for the cloth you can use any cloth you want. You could get a microfiber cloth for eye glasses to clean it or you can use a rag or paper towel. It is your choice.

If I were to switch my computer's IP from dynamic to static would it cause a huge increase in vulnerability? I want a static IP so I can forward a port for uTorrent, but I don't want to do it if it'll cause me to get hacked. :wail:

opn4bzns
12-26-2008, 2:26 AM
Argh, third edit: ok, that guide is confusingly written, you only need a static ip within your lan, so there's no security issue. UPnP is probably easier if your router supports it.

blimey
12-26-2008, 8:07 AM
Why are you worried of getting hacked? With the invent of the firewall people's computers getting "hacked" doesn't really happen. A network protected by a router and a firewall on each computer will be fine.

Also you can usually set up IP ranges for the ports you want to forward, eg say your network looks like this.

mother: 10.13.5.1
father: 10.13.5.2
you: 10.13.5.3

You can usually just set it to forward ports for a range of IP's like this: 10.13.5.1-3, meaning all the nodes in the network.

Also.. why does anyone care whether they're static or dynamic?

Well I can't help you with you mac software, but I can with iTunes. First of all, any albums that are in the iTunes store that you also have in your library can be automatically synced. (Edit > Preferences.) Then for the albums that are not in your library you can use programs like this (http://amphonicdesigns.com/).

But since you have a mac, you probably want to try this software designed by apple.

I can't tell you how good it is, because they only designed it for mac OS.

It's a mystery and we'll never know, unless you have a tendency to touch the reading surface with your fingers which you should never do. If you're going to clean it, only use a glasses cleaning-cloth, or a tissue as a last resort (never anything else). Wipe from the center outwards: never around in circles, or in zig-zags etc - you're trying to get dust and chemicals off the surface, not spread them around.

Beefynick
01-04-2009, 7:58 AM
You may have blown the actual fuse in the fuse box. This is common if you have an older home that has plug fuses in the fuse box. It should not be the wiring because it did not start a fire or spark everywhere, I am assuming that only the outlet where the lamp was plugged in sparked.

I would just keep playing with switches on the breaker and see if you can get it working, unless you have a plug fuse breaker in which you would need to replace the fuse.

A port scan is when someone scans your computer to see what connections you have open to the outside world. It can be done legitimately, by a network administrator, or illicitly, by a virus or hacker.

As to why you are having the message come up, I have no idea. If it is coming from your firewall though that is a good thing.

Usually it would come up with a list of google results.

Go to about:config (in address bar type about:config and hit enter), in the filter textbox add "browser.search.default" without quotes, hit enter (optional). There should be two entries,

browser.search.defaultenginename
browser.search.defaulturl

Double-clicking entries allows you to edit their values, change the value of browser.search.defaultenginename to "Google" without quotes and the value of browser.search.defaulturl to "http://www.google.com/search?lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=" without quotes.

Else, uninstall any add-ons (i.e. toolbars) that change your default search engine. Hypothetically, (re)installing Google toolbar will help -google toolbar is awesome for its popup blocker which is far better than the default built in firefox; combined with adblock plus, you will never be bothered by ads again.

Yes. You need a decent video card (definitely not possible to play with just on-board video) otherwise your computer will really struggle to render everything quickly enough, causing it to lag or crash.

A defrag should alleviate some lag issues.

Lostos, that modifies the search bar, and that's not where his problem is! Tweek's problem is that when you type something into the address bar that isn't a website, Firefox usually searches google with whatever you typed. Now it's searching in AOL.

To fix this, go into about:config and find keyword.URL. If it's bolded, right-click on it and press "reset". Just told Tweek this solution in private and that fixed it.

Test to make sure the settings do what you think they do before you recommend them to other people!

The video and flash file are both hosted on Youtube, so: Youtube. The download doesn't go through your site, the browser connects itself straight to Youtube to download the video.

Bandwidth is only used up for files hosted on your site, not the ones displayed on your site but hosted elsewhere.

Lostos, that modifies the search bar, and that's not where his problem is! Tweek's problem is that when you type something into the address bar that isn't a website, Firefox usually searches google with whatever you typed. Now it's searching in AOL.

Test to make sure the settings do what you think they do before you recommend them to other people!

I did that when I had problems after installing megaupload toolbar turning my default search engine to yahoo. However I also did this,
Else, uninstall any add-ons (i.e. toolbars) that change your default search engine. Hypothetically, (re)installing Google toolbar will help.
so I wasn't sure what the solution was. I guess you didn't try my second solution.

Should I create a linux encrypted OS (and what distribution) or Windows XP? My concern is that there are much more privacy tools for Windows than linux.

There could be so many reasons why this is happening. Are you sure it's not due to malware (what av?)? Post your specs and running tasks. Also, do you remember installing/updating a certain program when this started to happen? What version of WLM and Firefox are you using? What OS?

Yes. You need a decent video card (definitely not possible to play with just on-board video) otherwise your computer will really struggle to render everything quickly enough, causing it to lag or crash.

A defrag should alleviate some lag issues.

Is the gaming one on there good enough do you think?

Run a virus and spyware scan and defragment your hard drive. If that does not clear your problem up then it will be a big problem to fix (most likely).

Should I create a linux encrypted OS (and what distribution) or Windows XP? My concern is that there are much more privacy tools for Windows than linux.
The only reason Windows has more privacy tools than Linux is because it needs them. Linux is already built for security from the ground up. Windows has thousands of security holes and uses those privacy tools to fill them in.

Windows + privacy tools = slightly less secure and more annoying than Linux.

But just use whatever OS you feel like. Although Linux is free, has more features (seriously, it makes the Windows guys look lazy), updates are released right when they're complete, it's free so you don't have to pay for each version which will fix the problems in the previous version while having problems of its own, the software is limitless (and free), Linux can run most Windows applications through Wine (which is free).

And by the way it's free. And that means the people making the software in the open-source world aren't making it to earn money - they're making it just so it can be as good as it can be, which is reassuring (especially when companies like Microsoft only try to reach the point at which it's acceptable enough for people to buy it).

Yeah, I know, I've been using linux for ages, I'm using ubuntu right now, but srm for secure deletion doesn't come that handy as tools in windows, like ccleaner or eraser (http://www.heidi.ie/node/6). I've written a script for srm to clear any temp files on reboot.
However, I realized that if I created an entire encrypted OS, it won't really matter whether I 'm running ubuntu or xp, so I 'd prefer xp for their ease of use (still erasing sensitive data/history). As for network security, I've got it covered :).
My concern though is whether any os is not going to behave well and I 'm going to have a hard time encrypting it.

You want to create a ghost image.
What you need is Norton Ghost 14.0 (http://www.symantec.com/norton/ghost) ($70 unless you find it for free, let's say... from a friend). It takes little time to restore your system afterwards. Due to the fact it creates an exact replica of your PC with it's current drivers, it won't work on other hardware, so remember to create a new one when you upgrade your computer.

I don't mean it burns the image into dvds, but it uses a dvd to restore from the hidden partition. :)

I searched google for this, but couldn't get a definitive answer.

But if the compression is high enough, then it will suffice to use only 1 dvd.

The thing is that I fucked my vista to bits and it wouldn't start. Only way to get it to start (I tried fixing the MBR in many, many ways. None worked) was to reinstall vista and then install all the programs, drivers, updates up until the service pack to get it to the state I'm in now. I've done this twice. Don't ask.

HyperX is the overclocking RAM by Kingston. Its supposed to give you faster clock speeds OR tighter timings.

BUT

Honestly, HyperX is seriously overated. Its not worth buying for the amount of money, you can get other better overclocking brands such as OCZ

Do you foward the ports on your laptop to improve speed for something, while it's on wireless I.E torrents. If you do, thats why. Once you plug the ethernet cable in it uses that... losing the port foward configuration.

Well at least, thats what happens to me.

Well if the old computer is going to be used, you could just make all the folders you want shared and copy it over via the network. 120g is a lot, but it will probably be quicker then copying it onto a DVD then copying onto your computer from there. Just make sure its on a wired network, because wireless will take forever.

There shouldn't be, but heed this warning regarding USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 trickery from companies:
USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. It is now obsolete, but both of its speeds (1.5Mbps & 12Mbps) are being adopted into USB 2.0, and they are now called Original USB officially. Though some manufacturers label their products Full-Speed USB. Note that this seems a bit deceptive as it's easy to mistake Full-Speed for Hi-Speed. You won't be fooled from now on as you now aware that Full Speed USB is only 12Mbits/second where Hi-Speed USB mode is capable of a much faster 480Mbits/second.

I'd avoid the DVD route, it will take absolutely forever, you'll need 28 dvds and some things won't burn. Oh, and you'll have to sit by your computer for hours taking dvds out every half an hour or so.

You could swap the hdd that comes with your new computer with the old one, or just put the old drive in the new computer, move the files you want, and put it back. There's no reason networking or dvds wouldn't work in theory, but they're both ridiculously impractical and will require you to buy stuff.

Your best bet is going to be putting both the new hard drive and the old hard drive in the same setup and transfer files from the old drive to the new drive. If you were going to buy the DVD's required to transfer everything it would just be easier, and probably cheaper even, to buy an external hard drive. You also may want to think of burning stuff you need, but do not use often, on to a few DVD's to cut down some of the files needed to be transfered.

Well, what do you mean by blacking out? Is it a complete darkening of the screen with absolutely no brightness (ie, the screen is 'off'), is it a darkening of a screen that still has blacklighting, or is it a partial darkening of the screen where everything goes slightly dim (can you see anything)?

Are all other parts of your computer operrational when the screen blacks out? For example, when it blacks out while you're watching a video, does the sound still play, or if you type on your keyboard does seem to have registered when the image comes back?

How old's the monitor? Do you happen to know the model?

Ercoledi
01-25-2009, 9:25 AM
Well, since the monitor's not asleep or anything, it might be a video card issue. Try updating the drivers - go to System Properties and click on Device Manager in the left bar. While you're there, expand 'Monitors' and check which you have.

I have three different email addresses, one hotmail, one gmail, and one with my university. Can I make it so I recieve my university emails in either the gmail or the hotmail? I mean I know you guys won't know anything about my university website but presumably emails all work in the same way.

I googled it but I couldn't really find what I wanted.

You should be able to. I know that a lot of universities use POP3 for email.

To set it up in gmail you need the servers that your university uses for email. This information you will probably have to get from tech support there. Then go into Gmail and click on Settings. You then need the Account tab and add another mail account.

As for hotmail I am not sure.

For the sake of first person shooters. It's easier to distinguish details (and people in ghillie suits) in black and white, I've discovered.

Try uninstalling it completely and removing any related registry entries, restarting, then re-installing.

There is no such thing as "itunes music", the files are most likely already going to be in mp3.

If it's bought from the itunes store, not legally. If it's from cds or downloaded they're probably already mp3s.

Well then why, when I click to only show mp3 files, does my entire itunes library disappear and I'm only left with music that I've loaded from CDs?

And when I try to open a file to get at a song, it says 'no items match your search'.

That's not true. If it is showing a colour more then another (commonly with old monitors it is purple or pink) It's usually the cord or the port its plugged into not communicating everything properly. Usually jiggling the cord around will work fine.

That is true if it is showing one color more than another. If there is a shade (or tint) of a color over the entire screen it usually means that the screen is bad.

Playing around with my issue here. Both are plugged into the back of my computer. If I, for example, have the keyboard plugged in alone and then add the hub, the keyboard cuts out and the hub doesn't power up.

It sounds like I might be drawing too much power from my computer?

There are two versions of XP, Vista and Windows 7, 32 bit and 64 bit, 32, which you most likely have, only recognises about 3.5gb (give or take depending on video cards and stuff). To use it all, you'd have to install a 64 bit os, but it won't do any harm (or anything) if you don't.
