I'd say they're just too large or something, but if you're going to download something to fix them you may as well just download a standalone resizer.

Right I'm gonna need some help here, not really that much of a problem, more inconvenient and annoying, but every now and then, at random times my cursor will either dissapear, or wont allow me to click on a different window unless i press Ctrl + Alt Delete, then cancel. It's getting really annoying, it happens when im using both the laptop fingerboard and my mouse. It's esspecially annoying when im doin Coursework or talking to people on msn. Any ideas on how to stop it? Also I'm not really intelligent computer-wise so don't use nerdy dialect and give me it in simple steps, thanks.

You mean streaming as oppose to downloading a file? Why would you want to do that? Either way you're probably downloading just as much and taking up space on the hard drive, only with streaming it's temporary and you've got to download it all over again if you want to watch it again later. You might as well just download the files, and delete them later if you really want to.

I know sites to download files, but none to stream.

I'm going to assume it's OK to talk about this on the boards. The legality of fansubs is disputed: some companies are annoyed, some don't care at all. The ones that do care have already requested their material be taken down.

It could be because streams are much lower quality than downloads, and don't waste anywhere near as much of your quota. Also, I think it's probably ok to talk about, we used to have a sticky with links to sites like it.

You must restore your iPod and then sync it with your new mac. If you don't want to lose all your songs and shit I suggest using a third party iPod rip. I used Senuti (http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/) which worked great.

Manually:

Vista (http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2185/vista_clear_recent_items/)

How do I clear out the "Recent Items" list in my start menu, other than going through and opening a whole bunch of things to replace what's there?

Alternate to what lostos said, just right click on those files in your recent items list and delete them. It's only shortcuts to the files you're deleting that way, not the files themselves.

You could just avoid having it there in the first place, too. Double-clicking a file (e.g. word document) to view it in its viewer (e.g. Word) will always put it in the recent items list. However, opening the viewer first, and then dragging the file into the viewer (or using the viewer's Open, same result) will not create a recent items entry.

This works because it means the program is accessing the file: you never did anything with the file. Windows doesn't put files that programs access on the recent items list, or you'd have all sorts of system files on there that programs read constantly.

If you're talking about posting in spame, see Prawnatron's reply. If you mean spamming posts to up your post counts though, no it's not worth it. Contribute! If you don't want to contribute, why are you posting? Surely your thread isn't so urgent you have to make (probably) shit posts for it.

Think of it this way: As you post, you'll be (hopefully) lurking too and learn about the community. You might learn the community would find your thread to be a terrible one. For example, if you're just going to post about a news story, or something funny that happened to your dog... those are pretty lousy threads and the former's pretty much banned.

This could possibly use its own thread, but I fucked things up rather badly. I had a 90gb Vista partition and a 10gb Windows 7 partition. I prefer to use Amazon Music. If you have an account set up with Amazon that is a place you may consider.

I do not think there is an easiest way. All music download sites seem to function the same way. The only differences are if you pay per download or pay for a monthly subscription.

I use limewire for single songs and torrents for entire albums. thepiratebay.org is probably the best public tracker, but if you ask around you might be able to get an invite to more "private" ones like torrentleech.org or demonoid.com. How do make utorrent my default torrent downloader? Whenever I try to download a torrent it goes to Frostwire.

Open Start Menu and press "Run..."
Type "regedit", press OK.
Expand the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" key
Click Edit > Find, or press CTRL + F
Type ".torrent"
It should take you down to a little folder called ".torrent"
double click the (default) list item, and change "Frostwire" to "uTorrent". Press OK and exit.

Steam won't save my achievements in left 4 dead. I'll have them and it will show up, but when I close the game and open it again they're gone. I know it's not the fact that it's pirated because it doesn't do that with any other pirated game.

opn4bzns
03-01-2009, 12:53 AM
Could still be because it's pirated, you can't really expect consistency unless they were all uploaded by the same person. I doubt you'll be able to fix it without buying the game.

Or just right click the torrent, click open with, find utorrent and tick "always use this program to open this sort of file".

Alright this is a problem I've had for a while. Every now and again, not all the time, maybe once every few days, my internet will just stop working. But it's not all the internet, just web pages (and sometimes only some websites, while others work). So I could be talking on MSN fine, and yet I can't load any pages. Also it's not my browser, cause I've tried others. I'm on a wireless network, by the way.

Anyone know what's happening here and how to fix it? The best I can do a the moment is go and turn the modem and everything off at the switch and then back on again.

Mirrorman

If you are having wireless network problems you may want to try a new router. It could be that the router you have for some reason stops relaying a signal on occasion. If it is not already I would suggest putting the router on a surge protector because a power surge can disrupt signal transmission.

My suggestion based on my experiences would be the Nokia 6103. It has bluetooth and is a very rugged phone. The one I had survived numerous drops and falls. There was even one time where I dropped it and thought it was dead due to the screen malfunctioning, but it only turns out the screen was loose so I popped it back in and the thing worked like it was brand new. I've got a 6500, it's survived being used as a throwing weapon against my friends and quite a few drops, only small problem is the memory card can sometimes come abit loose, it's easily fixed with an elastic band or something tied around the phone. And the bluetooth on it seems alot better than any other phones i've had if that's something he really wants.

How do you download YouTube videos?
Also music for MP3.

There is a program out there called Youtube Downloader. That is what I use and it works well. It downloads the video in flash format then allows you to convert it to an avi, mpg, mp3, ect. Link (http://www.download.com/YouTube-Downloader/3000-2071_4-10647340.html)

As far as I am aware it is not. Microsoft has been talking about including outfits for avatars when achievements are unlocked, but as far as I know that is still not being implemented. Maybe they are giving you outfits for acheivements though and I am just unaware of it.

The best way to connect it would be a DVI to HDMI cable. I did not see if the laptop had a DVI port. If it does not you can get the DVI to HDMI cable and then a DVI to VGA adaptor so you can connect it to the VGA port on the laptop.

So far a DVI to HDMI cable is the best way I can think to connect a HDTV to a laptop without a HDMI port.

Ok so as you may know I just got a new graphics card. It comes with the standard two DVI to VGA adapters but it also came with a HDTV cable (Red, Green, Blue female slots). I was just wondering if I could potentially play my Xbox 360 through my Graphics card and into my monitor.

No. Graphics cards output, you need input to do that.

What's a decent, affordable way to record music so that it sounds vaguely like it's supposed to sound? My laptop speakers make my piano sound like a banjo and while that does have its novelties, I paid significantly more for the piano.

There's a bit of info on this stuff in the Muso sub-forum, but get a nice mic like Shure SM57 or something, get a preamp to plug into your computer and presto: your own recording studio.

Hey Explosm, does anyone know the default unlock code for the Pantech Duo Smartphone? I tried 0000 and all that, but it didnt work. I got the phone as a replacement through Pantech's warranty service seeing as the 1st one broke. Any suggestions/ solid facts?

My modem keeps cutting out.
It manages to connect to both the ethernet and dsl and stuff sometimes, but then the power cuts out and the power light goes red or off.
Sometimes it just flashes between red and green. Anybody know what I could do to fix this?

Also I have a new modem to replace it if necessary but I am not sure how to connect that. Do I need to give it all my ISP details and shit? Login, password and account numbers etc?

If the new modem is one your isp mailed you you should probably plug it in the same way your old one is, old ones are slower and whatnot.

I am more concerned with my old one, because obvs it is working now. But I don't know what the red power light means. Do you have any idea?

No and no.

I'd be buying it from Tesco Direct, which is a lot cheaper.

Also, No, my TV doesn't. I'll have to look into the rather long winded solution that Nick had.

Thank you, gentlemen.

You've probably already bought it, but how much was it? Dell have a laptop with mostly the same specs (a better graphics card) for 650 pounds.

No actually bzns, I still haven't, i can't get my ass into gear to sort out some paper work to get me the money.

Anyway, it's £729 from Tesco (http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.205-0500.aspx)

In related news, my cousin showed me Laptops Direct (www.Laptopsdirect.co.uk) and the shit they have there is off the chain.

Check out the specs of this, (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_6920G_Gemstone_Blue_Laptop_LX.APQ0X.65 7/version.asp) that i can get there. Thats pretty impressive. Also, does anyone know if the HDMI things that is says about on that laptop are the same ones as you would use to connect your PS3 to your TV, for example.

Eh, it's not that amazing. Using Dell again, they have an inspiron 15 with the same specs for £150 cheaper. Anyway, yes, HDMI is all the same, and it should all be compatible.

Not that I know of, my only experience with them is a 4 year old desktop that's still chugging away nicely. Have a look at other companies though, I only used them because I don't really know any british stores.

The only reason Dell are poor is because they lock down their systems. I like upgrading every few months, so a computer that wont accept a new graphics card is useless, but if you just want something that will work for a few years without stopping, there's nothing wrong with Dell.

with regard to the HDMI, I'd watch out, some appliances are coming whit the cheaper mini-HDMI. Not seen it on laptops yet, but don't wanna get caught out.

Beefynick
04-12-2009, 11:01 AM
There are adaptors for the conversion from HDMI to mini HDMI if that becomes a problem though.

I have had a Dell before and had no troubles with it. Dells are pretty solid in the laptop department, the only downside is they can be bulky sometimes. Personally I would rather go with a Dell than an Acer. I am not a huge fan of Acer because I have had one before and from what I have seen of other models the build quality is cheap. Yes they will work, but they just do not seem soild. Sony is just way too overpriced.

CharlieH
04-12-2009, 5:17 PM
I'm not too fussed about build quality. I'm not Jeremy Clarkson. I'll go with the Acer. i can get so much more from them, for similar or less, which can only be a bonus.

Kinda irrelevant on a laptop and I'm not sure if it's true anyway. I've upgraded the graphics card and hard drive on my old dell, the side of the case pops off with the push of a button.

I've got a button on my laptop that I can assign to open a program, and what I've done in the past is have it pointed towards Pidgin, my messenger, so that whenever I "close" Pidgin (send it to the taskbar), I can reopen it with the button.

I switched to WLM today and did the same thing, setting the button to launch msnmsngr.exe. Problem is that instead of reopening the same messenger, it opens up new ones - everytime I press the button, a new window pops up asking me to sign in.

Help?

Pidgin recognizes when the program is open, and just restores the window instead of allowing a new instance. WLM doesn't do this, you need a different command (restore, maybe?)

AHHHH.

I was on my laptop and I saw like.. antennas wiggling under my 4 key. So I freaked out and told my mum who was with me at the time, and she for some retarded reason blew on it, and it sort of... disappeared. So after 'AHHH WHY'D YOU DO THAT THATS NOT HELPING" I took it to my dad since he doesn't fail at technology like my mum. So there's this bug or insect or ant or spider or SOMETHING in my keyboard. And so he tries to take the key off, and that doesn't really work, except now whatever it is is GONE.

So, its like crawled into the computer or something? And so my dad's all like, oops, it might short out on you or something.

SO, lovely helpful Explosm. Is it possible to take the keys off my laptop keyboard? Its a macbook. AND will the insect damage my laptop or will it just die hopefully without hurting it. AHH HELP.
No, I'm not a total loser.

He installed it using the original, he copied the game on another disc for me, and I used the copied disc to install the game. Im pretty sure when I had my older computer we could play saved games, but that things long gone.

Well, if it's under warranty they will give you a new one, but if they give you a hassle saying its your fault or something stick with them and get a manager if necessary. Also, make suer you sign up for a slot for the genius bar before you go, for they are sticklers about that. It's on their website somewhere, I've never actually looked, you can sign up in the store, but that's not to say that they won't be full, meaning another trip back.

Seeing as how it's under warranty, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Are you sure it's not the cord that's messing up? If you haven't, try another cord or see if someone else's iPod will plug into the computer fine.

If that doesn't work, you might just have to bring it into Apple and see what they can do. They might be able to tell you what to do without having to replace it.

They usually send it back to check if the fault was something to do with the owner or apple, and deem whether or not it is valid for warranty. If they believe it is under warranty standards then they will either fix or replace it.

Its not that they intentionally fuck you over, they just need to make sure it iis faulty.

You may try to repair it yourself. If it is not working right now you have nothing to lose. There are guides online such as this one (http://www.powerbookmedic.com/free-ipod-manual/ipodnano.pdf) to take it apart. You should be able to buy a replacement screen on eBay or from a parts dealer easily.
