I'm having trouble with uTorrent. When ever the program is running, it decimates the speed of my internet connection.

I have a 10MB connection
Windows Vista Home Premium
Ports are properly forwarded through the router
Download limit 100kbps
Upload Limit 50kbps

Any ideas on how to solve this? Its driving me crazy!

I had this problem a while ago too. Unfortunately the only reason it has gone away is because I switched to Vista. Did you have this problem on xp or whatever you used before Vista?

I managed to improve it a bit by following countless guides on google, but nothing got rid of it entirely.

I've always used BitComet, but now I'm using Vista my download speeds have increased alot, maybe you should try alternative software? Bitcomet now comes with a built in FLV downloader, which downloads videos at about 550kbps, much faster than any torrent. Thats if you download videos anyway.

I'm about to explore BitComet and give it a try.

If I'm completely honest I can't remember whether I had the problem on XP, but I suppose if I had, I would be more annoyed! I'm starting to suspect it has something to do with the last version of uTorrent, so I'm hoping the next release or BETA will have fixed it.

Its frustrating though, I can't seed when I finish downloading, because it cripples my internet, I feel like I'm abusing the community!

Try a lower upload speed, like 35kb/s see if that fixes it, also try using uTorrent version 1.6 build 474 you should be able to get it from www.oldversion.com . Build 474 is before uTorrent was bought by Bittorent which is cohoots with the MPAA and it could be possible they are throttling you. Other than that my best advice would be to play with your settings.

Is your ISP Comcast? Because if so, that's your problem. Comcast fucks up your internet on purpose when you download torrents because they're morons and think that all torrent downloading is evil and illegal. I don't know of any other ISP's that do that, but I bet there are others.

It's also connected to IE and will catch the whatever you try to download, but if they could have an option to catch Firefox downloads, it would be perfect. I find I usually get about 100-500KB/s in a browser, but if I use BitComet I can get double and even triple that speed.

I have Comcast. But aside from the usual bullcrap it's fine with torrents.

Maybe, kind to think of it, my speeds HAVE been shit recently.

My torrents always start out <10 kb/s and increase to 100-200 kb/s after I've been in queue for awhile. I'm pretty sure it's just because when you start downloading you're at the back of the line for download slots, but as you move forward in line more seeders become available to you. Or something like that. To be honest, I don't really know, but that's how I thought it worked.

For direct downloading I've gotten speeds as high as 700 kb/s. I think it depends on how good a connection you have to the server you're downloading from, and whether or not that server is limiting how fast people can download from it.

Yeah, I've forwarded my ports, but if you use UPnP (utorrent settings > connection), a router won't require any configuration, and software firewalls are dead easy to config. The speed will depend on the popularity of the torrent and the speeds of the uploaders though. Some torrents, even if they have a lot of seeds will just be slow.

If you mean a .FLV downloader in Firefox, Bitcomet installed one on mine(?). The only thing it doesn't download is videos hosted on MegaVideo, but they can be downloaded using the CometBrowser anyway.

Well I've just upgraded to 1.8 Beta, and the problem remains.

Everything is forwarded properly, but it still doesn't appear to making effective use of the bandwidth. I get reasonable download speeds (50kbs) it just slows down the "real" internet.

I don't know if it matters, but it appear to be the time that it takes to connect to a server which has increased, for example I click a link and about 5 seconds later the page will begin to load. The load takes less than 1 second, its the getting started thats the problem!

Any ideas?

If this has always happened, it will always happen until the internets get upgraded, or you switch to an ISP that doesn't kill your bandwidth because you are uploading too much.

Basically, most ISPs split your bandwidth up according to a ratio.
Your upload had significant "priority" over download, but it is also smaller since uploading is rarely done much.
I don't really understand it much myself to be honest, never really looked into it much, but i really should.

Basically it will be a bit of trial and error with the settings.
The most importart ones are those in the BitTorrent page.
During the day, i tend to set the max connections to 100, max peers to 100, and max slots to 10, night, i increase them to 750, 500, 50.
I recently decided to use the scheduler as well, pretty useful for automating the above.
Enable encryption, see if that changes anything.

I tend to get that same slow initial "reply" to the actions i do, then the quick load if i am torrenting alot.
Try keep torrents to less than 10 at most, under 5 recommended.

Just last night I hit 600KB/s on one torrent. It really depends on how many people are seeding and how good their connection is. 100KB/s is no biggie.

I have a small open port for bitcomet and I fixed my wireless IP address so that it'll always be the same. So now I have an open and fast connection to others who have an open connection.

I mean instead of using firefox's download manager it opens up whatever you download in Bitcomet. Course, I think the new version of Bitcomet has added an option when I download stuff. "Download in Bitcomet" or something. It's a start.
