So I was wondering
How many Explosm users out there play an instrument?
Personally, I play bass guitar and I love it.
I'm in a band right now and we're coming along great

Although I can play bass and guitar, my best craft is the drums. I've been religiously playing for 1~2 years, but have had a set since I was 8. I can read drum music, I play in my schools jazz band, and I'm in a few rock bands with my friends.

I play the drums. I love it way more than I thought I would, when I started 7 years ago. Do not buy a cheap double pedal, you will regret it.

Edit: Oh yeah, and drum music is a lot easier to read than you would think.

I can play bass If I have to, but guitar is what I enjoy the most. I'm not in any bands though coz I'm lazy with practicing.
I actually thought guitar would have been the most played instrument, it's like the cliche instrument that everyone plays. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens when more people vote.

I'm just starting out with bass, gonna save up and get some lessons soon because I currently suck major anal hole at it. I've also sang lead vocals for 2 rock/metal bands. Also thinking of getting some vocal lessons to fine tune my voice.

I play guitar, bass, drums, piano, and I can sing. I do a lot of home recording, but I also play in a rock band that is doing very well. Out of all the instruments I play though, i'd have to say that I'm best at bass.

Indeed. I play it. I own four keyboards of varying age and quality.

I've also got a bass that I'm not great at and I can play alto saxophone pretty well. And I sing. Anyone can sing, though.

I really want to learn how to play piano for some reason.

I'll assume by 'horn' you mean 'wind', but there are at least two very different categories in reality. Also, one can play bass that isn't bass guitar... it might be orchestral, but they get a lot of non-orchestral use.

Piano would be nice to play, I'm told it's really easy if you started on it early. But we sax players and the like are awesome, which is better than being able to play the piano. Like nerds do.

I started out playing tenor sax for my middle school band. I later realized that I want to play guitar. I got an acoustic. Been playing acoustic ever since, and I love it. Last year our bassist for our senior high jazz band graduated, so I stepped up and learned the bass. Now I am probably the best at bass, followed by sax, then acoustic guitar. Not to mention that I am told that I have an amazing voice. I won a talent show at my high school with a song that i wrote with my acoustic.

Despite the instruments I can play, I really wished I knew how to play piano. Piano is just plain awesome.

I play the Viola. I started on Violin in 4th grade, but switched it up in 10th, and stuck with it ever since. I still play in an Orchestra, though I'm not as good as I used to be.

I've always wanted to learn to play piano, but for some reason I always had trouble learning bass clef, let alone reading two at once.

I play bass guitar, and I used to play tenor saxophone, and I was really good, in middle school I made 1st chair in the district honor band, but playing the sax gave me a huge cut under my lip (because I have incredibly dry skin) so i chose not looking deformed over saxophone once I got to high school. Currently I believe that I am extremely talented with the bass, and I used to be in a band where the drummer described me as: "the best bassist he has ever seen." But the music started to drift towards metal, and considering I like jam stuff, it didn't really suit me. And I don't know to many other musicians at my school that like jam so I haven't been able to start up a band.

I also really want to learn to play mandolin or banjo, but I don't have the money or time to pick either up right now.

Guitar, trumpet, and vocals.

Guitar - learned 4 years ago, and I'm good, but I don't really like playing it often
Trumpet - favorite instrument, I feel like I can just pour emotion into it and I love my tone
Vocals - Had lessons when I was a wee lad, and it helped my trumpet playing.

I've played guitar for the last four and a half years, and I'm pretty good at it I suppose. I like to fiddle around on the keyboard and harmonica too, and I'm fairly decent with the dulcimer, which is just fun to mess with.

I have been playing guitar for around six or seven years, and I own two acoustics and two electrics. Although I don't own a bass guitar or a drum set, I've been in a couple of bands and have become decent at these instruments as well.
Even though guitar is my main instrument, and I consider myself a good guitar player, I would have to say I love drums, and desperately want to buy a set. There's just something about the way that your whole body is engaged while playing drums, and you can just let yourself go completely.
That being said, I love all music, and love to make music in any way.

I started playing guitar around Christmastime. It's not all that fun compared tot he other instruments I've played. I've invested too much into it to quit though. I'ma stick with it for a little while.
One of my biggest regrets is selling my alto sax a couple years ago. Hopefully I'll return to it someday.

I also play the piano.

I managed to tick every box except for "none". I've always been a musical person, even though I don't have the hands of a musician.

First, I started singing for 17 years. I've been in different choirs and musicals, and have about a 3 octave range.

I've been playing piano on-and-off since I was 8. I hadn't played in years due to not having a piano in the house, until the weekend when I accidentally bought a new piano while getting guitar strings. I'm kinda struggling to get back into it because I can't remember ANY theory, but atleast if there are full treble & bass lines, I can play whatever's put in front of me. I actually taught myself to play piano at 8. My parents bought me one for my birthday because I was enjoying music at school. I've never had any formal lessons on it, because when I started music in high school I was beyond what the teacher was teaching the class.

I started playing recorder just before I learnt piano. This is how I learnt to read music, although I learnt to read bass lines myself. Even though I don't really play it anymore, I got overly skilled at it, and can even play the entire Star Wars theme. I spent like 3 years of high school playing it, cos the teacher wouldn't teach me anymore piano and the stuff he was teaching the class was boring me.

Every instrument I've ever picked up, I've been able to instantly play, except for the flute. Other instruments I can play are bass guitar, violin, drums & probably more that I can't remember.

After that I picked up the bass guitar, which is my truest love. With that came a small skill in guitar, but I can't play on stage to save my life. And lately I've been playing keyboards for my friends Aggrotech band.

I don't know why people always say that flute is hard to play. It's always seemed easy to me, must depend on when you start. Also, apparently some people- even musicians- get light headed from the air use when starting out no that one.

Also, that mellotron link is great. Looks like I have something to work on if I get bored.

And to the above: The Doors generally didn't have a bass player, and they did fine.

I've been playing for nearly 10 years now (it'll be 10 years in the fall). I started playing flute in the 5th grade, and played through my freshman year of college. I started playing piccolo my freshman year of high school, when I was in marching band. It has the same fingerings as flute but a much more difficult embouchure. When I was a sophomore in high school, I started playing trombone, too. And now, I'm taking piano lessons. So yes, I play 4 instruments.

Yeah I know, I was really suprised I couldn't play it. I actually had a friend trying to teach me, and she's done all of her grades and stuff on the flute. My problem wasn't the breathing or a bad sound. I have awesome breathing techniques from singing for 18 years. My problem was that I just couldn't make a sound at all. After about 3 weeks of her trying to teach me and I couldn't get it to make a sound I just gave up.

I play bass, guitar and drums. Do a bit of singing too (but only if it's melodic; my voice doesn't suit most of the screamo shit my bands play).

I did record some music once using my computer's mic where I played all the instruments and was singing separately. I layered each one over the other using 'audicity'. It was shit to say the least. But my Microsoft Sam techno was amazing!

I've been playing bass guitar about 3 or 4 years, guitar probably about 2-3, and piano/keyboard on and off since I was young.

I like to think I'm pretty good at bass, my guitar skills are good, though I suck at soloing, and I'm average at keys/piano.

I own 2 Yamaha basses, 2 Fender Squier electric guitars, a Cort steel string acoustic, a cheap nylon string acoustic, and a Yamaha keyboard. I'm hoping to save up some money and buy a decent nylon string guitar, and some bongos. I really wanna get good at bongos.

I saw a very nice gentlemen, when I was in primary school, who much to the amusement of my peers inflated a balloon with his oboe.

I've played the piano for a few years (a good six years, actually) and I guess I'm pretty good at it. The learn-this-play-this method with a teacher is boring me to bits, though. I'd like to do something fun. Something collaborative, for example, or maybe some improv. Any suggestions?

I play the oboe! Of course, it sounds like terrible, terrible death, but I can make notes sometimes. I'm primarily a saxophone player. Started out on alto in middle school, but now I'm set on the baritone. Sometimes I fill in on tenor. So yeah, my horrid oboe tone can be attributed to the massive embouchure difference between it and the bari sax I'm used to.

Bass Guitar for about 6-7 years, Upright for 5-6.

Although, I've been playing drums for the past 3 years. I'm technically awful, can barely roll, don't even know what a rudiment is, but I'm in a band on drums, not bass. I'm actually decent. Playing bass helps a lot when you pick up drums for reasons I'm way too lazy to explain. I'm a lot better than some band kids who've been playing for ages.

Bass players have rhythm, which is far more than most guitarists and vocalists can say, along with any other non-dedicated rhythm instrument...well...ok, the bass isn't JUST rhythm but very few bass players can solo worth a damn.

I dabble in guitar, keyboard, alto sax, and drums but I'm definitely an electric bass player. I've been playing for four years now, and I'd like to think I'm pretty damn good at it. I'm far from where I'd like to be though and I'm almost always trying to better myself at it.

Well, I can tell you that you can get 5 Gibsons, all Flying V's, and they'll all differ in quality. Sometimes you get a real gem, sometimes you get a real lemon. With Gibsons, and from what I've been told about Fenders as well, you're better off playing it at a store before you just go and buy it for fear it'll fall apart on you or just suck.

I just sing. Im really into grunge music and when me and my friends get together we sing things like STP and Pearl Jam. Im not trying to be an internet bragger but recently Ive developed a very strong baritone voice that would work great in an actual band. I already have about ten things written that would make for great songs to. The only difficulty is that I live in Alabama and its hard to find people that play that either arent already in a band or just want to do lame emo stuff. Needless to say the music scene in Alabama isnt that happening. Im just trying to network it right now and find a place I fit.

I only seriously play guitar, I do vocals casually sometimes with my band since we have nobody else to do it.

I don't play any instruments very well. I would much rather listen someone who has more musical talent than myself, than try to be no more than mediocre at playing an instrument. I just don't personally have alot of creativity in myself, so I don't think I could force myself to be above average.

Same I'm trying to learn guitar and bass, I played a little trombone in the school band last year, still I hate listening to myself play.

Hey aren't you that fail guy?
I'd give it all for
You to look my way

You to say those 3 words

Umm, no. I've played bass, tenors, and I'm snare now. So it's drums.

Violin for nine years, guitar for five, and bass for three. Guitar's my main instrument although I practice all regurally. I used to be in a death metal band called Ritualistic Slaughter and have filled in randomly throught several grind/death bands in my area. I'm currently writing with my new project Severance which was together for less than two weeks before our bassist went off to Germany. Had a hard time getting his ass back here between the booze and old friends...he got back a few days ago and we're hoping to record some stuff soon.

Guitar mainly, which is incredibly expensive (Along with every other instrument except vocals.) Due to outrageously inflated price. AUD$2000 for a standard strat. Shit ye not.

Actually, a serious vocalist who picks up a $2000 microphone and has a nice practice monitor set up will beg to differ with you on vocals not being expensive.

We use JBL floor monitors at rehearsal and relatively cheap mics. SM58's. (They do everything.)

I am singing back up vocals a little now. Looking at nice AKG mics, you can get quality around $500 but damn.

You can never go wrong with Audix OM2 and OM5s. We use those on the lead vocal at all of our shows (most sound guys just use 58s) and the mic is so hot. It's a little bit more on the affordable side as well.

If you're paying $2000 for a standard strat you're getting ripped off something bad. And I use a SM58, only $150ish and I seriously don't see much of a reason to update that any time soon.

Damn, that is high for an SM58. I can get them here for $89 - $109.
(Or last time I checked.) Then again we get ours through the studio we recorded at.

We tried that once before, but The Great Forum Reset happened.

Wouldn't mind trying it again, maybe making a variety of Explosm bands.

If someone wants to organize it, go for it. I'm far too lazy. I just reckon if we did, not just have one supergroup. Let all the mediocre people (such as you Erc) be in a group too or whatever.

Oh, and the fucking ukulele.

And sometimes me and my friends rerecord popular hip-hop songs. Using Ableton Live. So I know a little about the production and DJ'ing stuff too.

I played piano when I was little, moved onto flute for three months, trumpet for four, clarinet for four years-I forget all of that now, and so far I've been stuck on the harp for seven or eight years and still manager to semi-keep with it. I took voice lessons for three years and loved it until I switched teachers and then just quit for the hell of it.

But my harp is pretty and I get paid to play.

I play flute, piccolo, piano, and guitar regularly. I'm also a mega-super-ultra soprano. and yeah, I'm studying to be a music director...and I couldn't choose between becoming a band director or a choir director, so I'm gonna do both. fun times, yo

So I was wondering
How many Explosm users out there play an instrument?
Personally, I play bass guitar and I love it.
I'm in a band right now and we're coming along great

I can play trumpet, baritone (same thing, basically) and tuba very well. I have a fairly good ability at cello, and a beginner's ability at guitar and piano.

Oh, and I can play normal drums for any sort of orchestral music. Then again, everybody who has played an instrument can.

Hey I have an idea! why don't we all make a super-super group?! That would be awesome...but imposible at the same time.

The violin :-D. But hey, if you can play the violin, you can pretty much play the viola (just learn another clef, which isn't hard), and I can play a pretty decent scale on a cello.

It pretty much goes for any stringed instrument. I started on violin, went to contrabass, now I play electric bass.

I also transitioned from several string instruments. I went from Violin, to Double Bass, to Cello, to Double Bass again, and hence learned to play Bass Guitar.

I can't say I really fancied the cello or viola, hence my direct transition to Double Bass. There's something about those low octaves that I really like.
