I can't seem to understand why Windows live messenger isn't on there with the instant messaging programs.

You can remove Gaim from the list. It is now known as Pidgin, which you already have listed, and the Gaim link you provide redirects to Pidgin now.

Pidgin was formerly known as Gaim, and changed their name due to the clash between "Gaim" and "AIM".

I can't seem to understand why Windows live messenger isn't on there with the instant messaging programs.
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview

Possibly because it's so well-known it doesn't need to be there. But if it's going to be added, let's not forget AIM (http://www.aim.com/) and Yahoo (http://messenger.yahoo.com/) for Windows.

Here's Yahoo for Mac (http://messenger.yahoo.com/platform/mac) and AIM for Mac (http://www.aim.com/get_aim/mac/latest_macosx.adp).

Edit:
Also, I feel the antivirus sections of the lists should display the following message:

Choose your security software carefully. Installing multiple antivirus programs is dangerous: one antivirus might consider another to be a virus, and attempt to remove it.

For obvious reasons. Your security program shouldn't be chosen on a whim and you can't install several programs - one might damage another and cause it to become unreliable or unpredictable.

Also, a firewall that i used was Sygate Personal Firewall.
The people who made it got bought by Symantec i believe, but the personal version is still on Majorgeeks.com
Majorgeeks.com - Sygate (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Sygate_Personal_Firewall_Free_d3356.html)

Although i'm not entirely sure if this should go here or not, seeing as it also has a pro version (think that is still sold) and this version asks for registration on startup. (easy to close though)
But this version is by no means crippled, there is only a few more advanced features disabled that offer only slightly more protection against a persistent hacker.
It's entirely up to you if you want to add it, but it is an excellent program.

Axidos

Gaim was removed from the Linux list as it should have. However, Windows now lists Gaim instead of Pidgin, whereas it should just list Pidgin. It's a different OS but it's still exactly the same program and site.

Also, I would like to add Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/) to the list. It's a code editor with syntax highlighting in a large number of languages, as well as allowing you to create 'custom' languages to highlight.

Mp3tag (http://www.mp3tag.de/en/) - Windows - Organize mp3 files easily by modifying multiple tags at once. Includes features to rename files based on tags, derive tag values from filename, and load of other options. Requires install.

RazorLame (http://www.dors.de/razorlame/) - Windows - Front-end for the LAME mp3 encoder. The LAME mp3 encoder is also free and supports encoding options such as VBR, joint stereo, etc. As you've probably gathered, LAME is a command line utility. RazorLame is a graphical interface that basically runs the command line utility for you based on the options you specified. Does not require install, but requires you to set the location of the LAME encoder. The LAME encoder does not require an install.

SUPER (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) - Windows - Video conversion software that can pretty much convert from any filetype to any other filetype. It will accept any video file as a source file, and will allow output to everything from PSP to 3gp for cell phones to divx. It also allows audio output to an mp3 file or any other filetype. Very useful for converting Quicktime videos to a more universal format if you don't want to install Quicktime. Requires install.

"The Bootvis.exe tool is no longer available from this site."
Just a heads up.

And it doesn't improve speed anyway, all it shows is the stats of bootup, the functions on it to optimize are already in XP, think it is run every 3 boots if i remember correct. (that is all that comes to mind, i know something does that)

Although i rarely shutdown anyway, unless something absolutely requires it (in which case, unless it is software i REALLY want, it is going bye-bye)

Also, here is a good free software i just installed last night for network monitoring.
This currently only runs within Windows, but the source code is on the site
Also, this is a beta, it works for me so far, but it could crash, although i doubt it could do any bad damage to your computer if it did screw up in any way.
http://www.nnsquad.org/agent
It can detect forged packets, the most important being resets from your ISP that alot of ISPs have been using to combat torrenting (yes, disconnecting people is REALLY going to help, idiots)
It has a bunch of other cool stuff too, e-mail alerts as well.
Interface runs within the browser (port 88 on localhost), or you can right click the system tray icon and optn it within the default browser.

The only slightly annoying thing is that the window alerts alert.. but they don't take focus, and they aren't Always On Top.
Kinda takes away the reason for an alert if it doesn't get your attention.
You can disable them anyway.

I downloaded this and it's working well so far but ever since I downloaded it, I've had problems with my task bar. Sometimes when I start up my laptop my taskbar won't work at all. It will tell me the time, but I can't click on the windows that are minimized or the Start button itself and I have to resort to Alt+TAB. Sometimes I'm lucky and this isn't a problem. What it does is prefetch the information without asking you, and saves it on your computer. Whether you ever look at it or not. It's basically a trade-off between load time and hard-drive capacity, though it has an option to manually reset, wiping whatever it's downloaded.

Haven't used it long enough to see how fast it accumulates, but I'm sure it racks up. I honestly wouldn't recommend it, but I guess it's free or whatever.

/edit - It also throws an icon in your system tray, running your browser or not. No setting to remove from sed system tray.

My cousin recommended it to me and he's used it since it came out. He sets it to reset once every couple weeks, and says he's never had any trouble with it. And while it sits on the tray it's inactive, and from what I can see doesn't do anything. But, I'm not the best out there with computers, and maybe it's behind the scenes.

If you need a program to back up your own purchased DVDs (on your hard drive...then a DVD) in case of scratches, fire, etc I would recommend you use:

DVD Shrink (http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Rip-Other-Tools/DVD-Shrink.shtml)

a guide for the program (which isn't very intuitive) can be found here (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdshrink31-main.htm)

Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and can handle floppies, USB disks, memory sticks, and anything else that looks like a disk to Windows.

Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), versions for Windows X64, and the complete sources.

TrueCrypt: a handy, free open-source disk encryption software for any operating system. Great if you share a computer and there is a select few of files you don't want others to see/mess with.

Anyone know an application that can help me add subs to my iPod movies (MPEG-4), I already know how to get subs I just don't know how to add them.

Edit: For Windows Vista

Okay. Cool.

Also, I just put Google's Web Accelorator (http://webaccelerator.google.com/) on my computer, and it actually helps. It wasn't a HUGE difference, but it was faster. I checked the thrread, and couldn't find this anywhere. Sorry if I repeted.

I don't know is this is already somewhere, but this doesn't work anymore.

FreeFileConvert (http://www.freefileconvert.com/) - Online (mainly Windows formats) - File conversion for dozens of file types. There are a few similar sites, but this one does not have registration or subscription that would prioritize conversion or incur a delay penalty for failure to register. Also supports downloading of streaming music and videos with conversion to a specified format. Converted files are hosted on their server for 12 hours. A download link is provided immediately after conversion.

Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com) Basically a Linux-like environment CLI for Windows that allows you to run Linux like programs.

Everything (http://www.voidtools.com) Pretty much a standalone version of the database file indexing search engine that was implemented into Windows Vista and Windows 7.

nLite (http://www.nliteos.com) A pre-installation Windows configuration and component removal tool that allows you to make custom Windows installs and unattended installs.

Navicat MySQL Admin Tool (http://www.navicat.com) Probably one of the best MySQL database administration/editing tools you'll find, has saved me countless times with game servers and sites.

Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com) Basically just removes programs and EVERY single trace of it through out your file system and registry, really helpful at work when an installation/uninstallation fails.

Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) Really really handy and powerful remote control program, doesn't require port forwardings or anything like that, just the ID number and the randomly generated password, really helpful to help customers over the phone when you can actually see what they are clicking on or just click it for them.

WinDirStat (http://www.windirstat.info) A graphical representation of the size and allocation of files on your computer, really handy to easily free up space by just deleting the bigger boxes :)

FolderSize (http://foldersize.sourceforge.net) Really handy and useful tool to be able to compare folder sizes in windows explorer, saves heaps of time and clicking.

and yeah, just a few of the random helpful tools I use at work and home :D
