Is America screwed? Is the generation currently in Gradeschool and Highschool going to send us down the path of no return?

The thing that set me off on this is quite simple yet it makes me doubt americas future as a country. So I was in a freshman history class, (transfer), and the teacher was talking about dictators throughout history. He asked if anyone likes Kim Jong and people stared at him with blank faces. He then asked if anyone knew who Kim Jong was, after people shouting things like HE WAS IN TEAM AMERICA!, Isnt he a rapper?, is he a movie star? I put my head in my hands and doubted americas youth.

Do we know anything outside of music movies and TV shows? Are people even aware of the condition of the world? Please post your thoughts on this and other things that Americas youth has said or done that simple make you doubt The countries future.

Because the 14-year-olds in your history class are a perfect example of what our entire nation's education and foreign knowledge consists of.

Also, why didn't you answer him rather than stare at him with a blank face?

Don't worry about it. Go to any decent private school/public school (english public schoot, not public public, private public) and you'll find plenty of people who will bring you back from despair, plenty of people who'll know apparently obvious things who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

The world still needs a working class/blue collar class and the people you mentioned are it.

Edit: Matt at 14 I knew that and more about European history and other foreign history. So it really isn't a good sign that they don't know it :indiff:

You happen to be in a class of idiots, but you can't assume that represents all of America. I don't live in America, but I don't believe in the bullshit some people say about everyone in America being retarded. Maybe the country has more than its fair share of idiots, but there are also a hell of a lot of smart people. It's just that the idiots are the ones you hear about from other people and the ones you remember.

Edit: I have to agree with Matt, although we at Explosm may know more than the average person, freshmen are by definition not particularly intelligent.

Is it true that 1/3 of Highschoolers are dropping out in America?

Is America screwed you ask.

Did anyone see Supersize Me?

Well for those who didn't, there was a bit in it where A bunch of schoolkids were shown some pictures of a few famous people, like Hitler, The Queen and Jesus. Very few of them even knew who the Queen was. However, all of them correctly knew who Ronald Mcdonald was.

I rest my case.

EDIT: Forgot to add, this is my 1000th post. :D
