View Full Version : House VS. Castle?

So I was reading about property values and such, which led me to a website that compared values of houses in New York and such. They compared the houses from New York and etc.. To places in the French country side or the U.K.
So I was wondering would you rather pay $1,000,000 for a nice house in Boston? Compared to a castle in Italy? Now to me the castle seems like an obvious choice. But I was wondering since people actually choose the house in Boston, is their a reason I'm not seeing?

Duh. Castle. I plan to modify my house to be as castle like as possible anyway. That's a dream that I would love to have come true. How is this even debatable?

Well, the castle is old and gross and stuff..
Casalen

Old isn't always gross, and castles can be cleaned, retrofitted, wired, etc. You can even build add-ons, keeps that make it more like a palace and the like. With historical battlements.
And longbows on the battlements!!!

The castle is a pretty good deal, but for people who work in Boston, it's just much more convenient to take a train to work rather than a flight. Plus, how much domestic help would one need to maintain a castle, or are maids cheap in Italy?

I can't believe the castle would be that cheap. If I could I'd buy it and use it as a summer home. It's kind of hard to uproot your entire life in North America and move to a remote countryside European castle.
Although, with zoning regulations and whatnot, I doubt you could build a drawbridge and turrets in suburbia in this day and age, so living in an existing castle has its advantages.

Fuck, Castle in Tuscany no doubt.
But maybe that's because I absolutely love Italy and want to buy property there when I'm older. But definitely, who wouldn't?
Edit: I was missing a comma.
Given that none of us are 45/50+ years old, it would be a bit boring to hang around in a castle all day, no?
I would much rather live in Boston where life would be a little more vibrant than living in a castle with a huge garden and a lot less access to a more active community.

I'd sell the house/castle, buy a smaller house and bank the rest of the money.
Gives a safety if I were to lose my job or whatever.
Although, I'd probably choose the boston-house, simply because making a castle to what it can become takes waaay too much work and money. + what Spaj said about the vibrant life, very good point
Fuck Castle in Tuscany no doubt.
But maybe that's because I absolutely love Italy and want to buy property there when I'm older. But definitely, who wouldn't?
Yeah same here. I'm kinda with Spaj about living in the middle of the city, I hate being too far from the city for long periods of time. But I adore Italy, I've always wanted to live there at some point.
I think I'd probably prefer the city now, but later in life go for the Italian castle.
Sure, the castle costs the same and it certainly is pretty. Problem is, see; you live in Boston. All your shit's in Boston. All your friends and family are in Boston. Your job? That's in Boston too. What about your life? Oh yeah - Boston.
You also don't speak Itallian, douchebag.

That's doesn't mean shit. People move country all the time, frequently. You make new friends, you get a new job, you make a new life for yourself and you visit your friends on holiday. Big deal.
What if living in Boston is shit? What if it's a dump compared to rural Tuscany, and you're really unhappy?
What so everything that makes up a person's entire life isn't worth shit?
Very few people are willing to leave behind everything they have and everyone they know to take a jaunt 5000 miles across the world because a house in a foreign country where they don't speak the language is pretty.

Wait why are we even talking about this? Neither of us even live in Boston, so it doesn't matter either way. We'd be living both of our lives behind if we went for either of them.

Are you kidding? Turn one of the staircases into a waterslide, the moat into an ATV track, put velcro mattresses on the walls of one or two rooms, or hell, why not a wing, get an awesome "wine cellar" (plus whatever other alcohol catches your fancy!) and have house parties EVERY WEEKEND.
You live in a castle. You can afford it. HAHA.

When you take the castle in Italy you:
1. Would have to talk Italian:wail:
2. wouldn't be able to get any other job than getting rid of the boddies of your lalanew mafia family.
3. Would robably have to rebuild the whole castle becouse it's about to collops.
So yeah, I'd take the house.

I agree with this. As if a postman would ever go out of his way to deliver stuff to your door in the middle of a field somewhere in the country.
And you'd need enough money to furnish it like a castle.
I want to go to Italy some time. Seems nice.
True story: You would almost certainly have a P.O box which you'd need to visit in order to collect thy mail.

I would never spend 1 million on the actual house. I'd only want a medium sized house, if you had a massive house it wouldn't feel very homely, it'd feel really empty, same with a castle. I'd prefer to get a house with a fair amount of rooms and just spend the rest of the money on stuff to put in it.

Cristo, you say this is irrelevant because none of us live in Boston, so I'll compare it to my own city. I live in Vancouver, one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. A million dollars would get you a nice house here, but you'd need much more for a mansion, villa, estate, or other words that evoke the European countryside. It would be more expensive to buy an amazing house here than that particular castle in Italy, yet you don't see people flocking to Europe because it's cheaper to live there: the fact remains that it's not worth it to give up your entire life. I love Vancouver, and I'm sure a Bostonian would also defend himself, his city, and his life. (I would defend Boston too. I've been there once and Crow said it: fucking awesome.) Sure, every city has its shitty parts, but if you live in a dump you probably can't afford a castle anyway. It sounds like a cool idea, but Ox is right. If your life revolves around city life, forget it.

Oh well yeah you're right, but I've always had a hankering for living in Italy because I love it. And it's not like there aren't any big cities in Italy. Rome, Florence, Milan and it's not like they're a thousand miles away.
But I suppose it's all about personal preference of course, but I don't think I'd want to settle down in rural Umbria/Tuscany until I was bit older, or maybe had a family of my own. God knows I don't want to raise a family in a big city nowadays, get them somewhere rural so they can be safe from gangs and drugs and shit.

It depends on where the house is. Sure, there are some slummy parts of Boston, but for the most part it consists of snooty college students (Boston is a huge college town, with Boston University, Harvard, and MIT) and a very liberal populace. Combine that with some awesome museums, history, and cool places to see, and Boston is one kick-ass place. A big house, or a really nice apartment in Boston would be like a dream-come-true to me.
EDIT: Okay, the link wasn't working for me earlier, but now I just took a look, and I'm starting to agree with Cristo. I feel fucking conflicted.

Castles for sure. Why?
Well, you will almost certainly get more for your money since it isn't filled with a ton of crap. (mostly)
And you can modify it over the years, giving you something to aim for, which is always good with a house. A perfect house = boring.
Plus, look at the pictures in the post, all those castles > their house counterparts, they look 100x more epic to walk up to than a silly little house.
"I own that place", you wouldn't want to say that with a crappy little generic looking house, would you?
Although in saying that, i'd rather build my own house for those amounts of money than buy one.
Already have an awesome one designed in 3D (wish i could post it just now, but i'm trying to figure out why my drive won't be read by this kama connect! the others work fine, and i know the drive isn't dead)

Even after I read that, I'd take a house in the states. Who truly needs that much room and land and luxury? Sure it sounds great, very scenic, but, think of the possible taxes, the cost to keep it looking good, the cost of the utilities... it does not seem worth it. Small space in the States, true, but the cost wouldn't be as bad. Granted I'd love to live in a castle just for the sake of doing it, but it wouldn't be worth the money to keep it going. I would honestly rather live in a trailer than a castle. Their reasoning could be that their life is in Boston and it seems stupid to uproot it all and the cost that woulds be required for upkeep can be a deterrent too.
I'm gonna save up 2 million and buy both, just to be safe.

For the comments on a castle being not worth the upkeep: if you can afford to seriously consider getting one, odds are you don't need to worry about paying the bills on it. And people would love to rent even the area outside your castle for events and the like. Few things are cooler.

True, but are the castles in the cities where your friends, job, entertainment, and life are? I'm sure there's nothing wrong with living in Europe, but if you're going to sacrifice your North American life and start over, living in a remote castle would just be a handicap.

Maintenance of a castle would run you a lot more than a small house or apartment. Moving costs would also amount to quite a bit. In my opinion, why not just get a cheap house instead of either of the ridiculously expensive places.
That website is disgustingly over-priced. It clearly just found to the oddest, most expensive places and compared them to the cheapest villas.

Expenses are a trivial matter when purchasing a castle. The subsequent taxing of your serfs and neighbouring lords would cover the expenses.

Wait, are you kidding?
$500,000 - $1,800,000 is fucking cheap for a castle. For a house, it's expensive but a caslte it sure as hell isn't.
And jewishjosh unless you live in any of the cities mentioned you'd be forced to move away from your friends and "life" and livelihood whether you moved to a castle or a house.

It's cheap for a castle, like you said. I still wouldn't pay that much for a home.
I suppose, though, if you had to pick the clear winner is the castle. There shouldn't be any debate on that. Plus, castles are fucking big, any family you didn't want to leave behind could live in some of the hundred rooms. You'd still be able to go a week and never see them without anyone leaving the castle.

I'd definitely take the castle. This is going to sound horribly geeky, but I would gather every last one of my friends and reenact epic medieval battles. On a more modern note, the castle and surrounding area would also be amazing for paintball. Just imagine sneaking through the halls and all.
This is all as long as it's an older one like the South African one on that website, not the "New" other ones.

You could just decorate with garlic to ward off the vampires and keep a wooden stake near your bed. It would smell like garlic but at the same time you would be able to make some good garlic bread.

I'm from Australia, so either way I'd move to a completely different country. I'd rather take the castle, seeing as it would be a nice change from city life. Why would I get a house in Boston? They're pretty similar to Aussie ones anyway.
Plus, I could have huge parties, without worrying about space. And if a room got messy, i could move to another one, then clean out a few when there aren't any clean rooms left.
