Okay, so I bought a LifeCam off Ebay, but it came sealed in the original packaging, unopened, so I don't think Ebay is the problem. I've used it to stream live footage already (I.E. MSN and such), and today I opened up the program that came with it to record some footage of me playing Rock Band. I recorded the video, and much to my dismay, when I open it, all I get is a weird green static-type screen. The audio works fine, but the video doesn't seem to record right. It gives me this in every player, VLC, DivX, etc. The weird part of this is, I opened the file it gave me in Windows Movie Maker. Now, when I double-click the clip, I get the same thing in the preview box. However, if I drag it down to the timeline and play it on the timeline, the video is fine. I saved the film from here, same problem.

Anyone else encountered anything like this before? :/

EDIT: Video recording doesn't work in the LifeCam packaged software or Windows Movie Maker, but I tried with Camtasia Studio and AmCap, and they both work (But they are shitty, shitty alternatives)

I would just do some research on good capture software as the stuff that comes with devices is rarely good.

Now, that's definitely odd. I told you yesterday that I have a slightly different LifeCam model, and mine works perfectly with the packaged software (I mean, why wouldn't it?) But you said on vent yesterday that yours didn't come in a box. What's all this about "it came in the original packaging"?

Anyhoo, as far as alternatives go - try VideoCap. It's like a better version of AMCap (both came packaged with my previous webcam) and it worked fine for me - I mean, you say they're shitty alternatives, but what do you really need it to do other than record video?

Also go online and try to find a different version of the packaged software. Give OldVersion.com a look-see.

Not sure what I was doing when I wrote that post last night, but it didn't come in the original box. It did, however, come in the packaging FROM the box. The only thing missing was the box itself. Either way, the reason AMCap is a shitty alternative is that you have to declare a file capture size before you record, so you either pick a low number and risk losing part of your file, or you go with 1 gig and end up with like one minute of film on a 1 gig file. I'll look into VideoCap.

It sounds like a codec problem, have you installed DivX and other codecs?

Yeah, I have DivX and the Theorica Codec Pack, and I'm starting to think that a codec problem is what it's gonna be, because the videos I record work in VLC Player.

Well, I feel like an idiot. I just thought today about how it's a MICROSOFT webcam, so I updated my Windows Media Player to 11, works fine now. :fmita:
