View Full Version : FireFox 3.0

Good news for BETA testers and people who just really like playing with new toys: Firefox have released their Release Candidate version of their 3.0 bowser.
It can be downloaded Here (http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html) .
It's claimed that it is up to 3 times faster dealing with Web 2.0 interfaces, and having played with Windows Live Mail an Facebook, their claims seem accurate.
Although it is technically a Tester's pre-release eing a Release Candidate its almost perfect, and should the world wide trials work OK, it will be released with no changes, so even if you're not a BETA tester or programmer, its fairly safe to try out.

I'm using it right now, I love it. I can open multiple tabs with no significant drop in performance when browsing. It also seems to handle embedded videos a lot better than 2.0, I haven't had a freeze up yet when viewing YouTube, whereas before I got them all the time.
I would recommend Firfox users to give it a try and see how you like it. You can always switch back to Firefox 2 if you don't.

I've never had a drop in performance when using tabs, and the only freezing I've had on youtube is when I open more than 3 videos and the sound stops working.
Definitely will give it a try. Firefox 2.0 is already faster than IE, so maybe this will make it even faster. Hopefully it'll have more compatibility with most IE only items.

I'm using it now. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference in performance.
It's better on multiple tabs but no different for the youtube embed.
I tried it yesterday at Spazzy's suggestion. I just didn't like it because none of my add ons worked. Otherwise it seemed cool, I didn't really notice much of a difference so I went back to 2 for the sake of my apps.

Yeah Aoife, I think I like it because I don't use any add ons besides visual ones, so when those didn't work I wasn't too worried about it.
Mr. Crow
05-19-2008, 8:36 PM
The add-ons don't work because none have been made as of yet for Firefox 3.0. Once 3.0 officially releases, I'm sure that the add-ons' respected creators will update them to be compatible.

I'll use it solely for the fact that dragging an image from a webpage on to your desktop now looks a lot cooler.
And, y'know, performance n' shit.

05-19-2008, 9:36 PM
My super exclusive Cyanide and Happiness add-on isn't compatible with it, neither is my black skin, so it's a bit brighter than I'm used to.
Other than that it looks super cool and modern. I'll keep it just because I don't feel like uninstalling right now.
and performance blah blah blah.

You could always just make your add-ons work with 3.0 by following this guide. (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/blogs/mcallister_on_software/146062/make_older_addons_work_with_firefox_30.html)
I use it, pages load much faster and the only two add-ons I actually use (ietab, and adblock) work.
I use it and the only problem is it now won't open .swf files within the browser. It comes up with the option of opening them with another application or saving them. I've even reinstalled flash. Apart from that it's great.

Personally I'm having a few issues with it but it could be because of ubuntu messing with it just freezes often while loading web pages and when I have to force quit in oder to get firefox to open again I have to restart my computer it gets frustrating after you have to do this several times a day.

I 've tried it, but I think I 'll stick to Firefox 2 for a while since most add-ons are having compatibility issues with v3.

I'm using it since 1 month (Ubuntu version) and I can say I love it. It has great performances and interesting new stuff.
I just remembered something I read about firefox 3, when zooming in and out (ctrl -/+) the EVERYTHING scales not just the text so images and all scale.

Just downloaded it and I really like it. I feel like I did the first time I switched from IE to Firefox. Everything feels like it's moving quicker and loading smoother, even though there's probably a very minimal difference.

I have noticed very little difference apart from the new addons options being much better. Although my internet pages have timed out less, they used to because my internet spikes, but im not sure if thats v3 or not...
Anyone got a list of the actual new features because the mozilla site shows not very much.

Aesthetically it's coming along very nicely. The icons are nice, as is the glossy light blue on the toolbars. I'm glad they've tweeked the back/forward buttons so they're no longer hideous, too.
The spell checker still needs work though, it's a good feature but its suggestions for misspelt words are often bizarre.

How is the options for this one?
Is it not a mess like 2 was?
I've stuck with 1.5 solely for that reason, i hate V2s options, what the hell did they do with half the stuff? Screw going into about:config when i want to do routine stuff.
I might download this one sometime later and give it a try since i am doing some "Web 2.0" stuff and i'd like to test how it will work with it.

I just installed it and I must admit that I looks like it's kind of faster. I don't use a lot of add-ons and the one I had are compatible with 3.0 wich is great.
I just wish there was more skins for 3.0, or maybe I'm just looking at the wrong place or doing it wrong.

Release Candidate 2 was pissing me off, it kept clearing my cookies every time I closed Firefox. I checked all my settings, it should have been saving them forever, but I had to re-login to explosm and all my other sites every time I visited, so I downgraded again. :frown:

I have the opposite problem, although I think it's deliberate, not a bug. It keeps my history forever. The wording of the option about how long it keeps history has changed from 'keep for x days" to "keep for at least x days", so presumably it just keeps it until I haven't got the free hard drive space. Completely unnecessary and annoying.
FireFox 3 is out and ready to go, get it here to contribute to the world record they are trying to set: www.getfirefox.com
I'm using it right now. It kicks ass so far.

I upgraded recently from the last release candidate so no surprises over the UI. It's definitely very nice, how it changes depending on your operating system.
I keep encountering a "Firefox is not responding" error, though, which only started popping up after the upgrade. It's manageable, though, so it's no biggie. Anybody know why it's happening?
I've noticed some near graphics (like the back button), a few minor details, and slightly improved load speeds. That's about it. I'm guessing it is better against pop-ups and cookies though.

Yeah, I noticed that Niki. Lots of updates recently for my add ons which made them compatible. I would really recommend switching Street.
So I just upgraded, and everything runs slower than before and half the stuff doesn't load. Is that just cuz this computer is a piece of poo? Or did I somehow do something wrong?
It might be the computer, it ran a lot faster for me and it takes up less memory than 2 did.

Well um, Mouse Gestures hasn't, and I've become accustomed to "right-Click+hold" and be able to refresh, go back or forwards or switch tabs without actually clicking on the buttons, so i just went back to FF2.
Edit: I will say that going from FF2 to 3, i didn't really see a difference,

That's been happening to me with iTunes since the newest version of it, so maybe it's a problem with Vista rather than Firefox. Does it still give you an error report if you alt-f4 out of the window?

I think you're right; I think it is a problem with Vista because every time I quit out of COD4 Multiplayer I get a crash report. iTunes has been a little iffy for me too lately.
Firefox 3 is definitely on a level beyond any other browser I've used (especially IE), and I'd whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone.
Is there a way to make the address bar and autocomplete bar like they were in firefox 2.0?

I really do like Firefox 3.0, but the only web browsers I've ever used are Internet Explorer and Firefox, so I don't have much to go by. I used IE for years until I finally gave in and downloaded Firefox a few months after joining Explosm. I used Netscape in Elementary school for research, but I don't count that.
Is Safari much better, Happiness? I'm thinking about downloading it, just to see what it's like.

I got this a few days ago mainly because my brother is somewhat of a mozilla bitch. I have noticed it a bit (noticeable) faster and some web pages that didn't work before work now (wow armory for those who know) for some reason. It's definitely worth getting, but for what I use it for, I haven't seen that much of a difference.
