360 wireless adapter help!

Okay so I have a brand new xbox 360 and a brand new wireless adapter, however when I plug it in and run connection tests it says that it is "disconnected" I figure it's not connected to the network (obviously), however I was wondering if you guys could give me a solution to this dilemma of mine.
When I go to wireless settings it's faded out and further more not selectable.

Is the wireless adapter a Microsoft one or a third party one?

What internet provider and router are you using?

Maybe you're too far from your WiFi source, could that be possible?
