making mashups

i.e. putting two songs together into one.

You can do it with two turntables, like these guys: http://www.snsmix.com/

Turntables are easiest to do because many singles on vinyl have an instrumental version of the song. The problem however is that it's a little bit more difficult to find singles. You can take two tracks and splice them up using a program like Soundforge or Reason or any other sound editing software.

A couple of website that might be helpful are Splice (http://www.splicemusic.com/) which is a "mashup" community.
Bootcamp (http://www.paintingbynumbers.com/bootcamp/) offers a tutorial for beginners.
