Anyone out there a fan? Ska is probably the most underappreciated genre of music out there. Most of my friends at school don't even know what it is. I didn't really listen to music much before I noticed ska, and I think it's responsible for making me a more open-minded person. Actually, probably not, but it's still damn good.
I like Sublime and The Aquabats.. they're somewhat Ska, right?
Otherwise, Ska is a pair of shoes covered in cobwebs in my closet.

I'm pretty into ska. I really like Sonic Boom 6, Random Hand and Reel big fish

Sublime isn't really ska, they're considered more of a punk/reggae hybrid. Check out Save Ferris, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Real Big Fish, or the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. If you are into female fronted ska I'd recommend old No Doubt or Dance Hall Crashers.
Ya i do.
I like Reel Big fish, less than jake, Big D(seen them, and the like.

Fucking kick ass! Sonic Boom Six were awesome at reading this year, properly mind blowing. They ended on a cover of Sound System with the leadsingers of the Fillaments and The King Blues. Knocked my balls off. It's funny because the first time i saw Random hand was at an SB6 gig. What other british underground are you into? It kinda sucks that all the pioneers of the third wave comback are dying out. Adequate Seven split (One of the best live bands i've ever seen), Jesse James split, Capdown are splitting, it sucks, the flag's going to be passed to Howard's Alias as the biggest underground ska band.
Oh man my country rules right now though.
Really getting into Big D and The Kid's Table right now, they kicked utter ass at Reading, really made me sit up and take notice. Plus the obvious american canon of Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Mad Caddies, Streetlight Manifesto and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

On one of my many days spent sitting on my ass a while back, I found a ska internet radio station. It's just about the best thing ever.

Mad Caddies, Streetlight Manifesto
O yeah.

Some of my favourite bands are (early tomas kalnoky) Catch 22, Streetlight Manifesto,(again Kalnoky - he's serioulsy a musical genious) Ska -P , Big D and the Kids Table, Mustard Plug, Rx Bandits, MMB, Mad Caddies, Operation Ivy and citizen fish. Plus there are so many other amazing ska bands out there.
I fucking love ska. I only just discovered it about three years ago with the Keasbey Nights album but its seriously one of the best genres of music, ever. My boyfriend fucking hates it. He says he would rather listen to the same N*Sync album over and over and over than listen to a fucking upstroke and brass section. His loss right?

No one's mentioned Suburban Legends yet. Sure, they're not exactly ska these days, but I'm fucking addicted to their old stuff.

What other british underground are you into?
Not much really its a pretty new genre of music for me I usually listen to more metal. I listen to Capdown and Mad Caddies as well.
I missed the last SB6 and RH gig near me I was in france on holiday, all my mates went and then one of my mates went Leeds last weekend and saw them again. I'm so jealous of him right now.

Ok, well look out for Fandangle, and Howard's Alias. If Fandangle play a show near you, you go. Also, Pickled Dick are kicking ass left right and centre, and Weapons of Brass Destruction might actually become your favourite band if you're into metal too.Shameless plug (http://http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3240056). Grown at Home are trying to grow into Adequate Seven's shoes, jury's still out on them. Adequate Seven were one of the greatest bands to ever grace the scene, so check those guys out as a matter of priority.

Yes! Thanks for getting me into them, they're awesome.
I love ska, but none of my friends even know what it is, so I'm hard pressed finding decent ska, but I listen to Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, and now also Streetlight Manifesto.

You should seriously check out Ska-P if you havent already. They're this spanish ska band that plays some of the most solid music I have ever heard. Try looking for Cannabis, sexo y religion and el gato lopez. Just phenomenal. If you think that english ska lyrics are fast try listening to it in spanish.
Also, anyone who likes Streetlight Manifesto really needs to listen to Catch 22's Keasbey Nights and Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. SM redid Keasbey nights last year and it sounds great but I dunno, its just cooler to hear what the original sounds like.

I heard that a local band (here in san antonio) called "Kevin Goes 2 College" or "Kevin Goes To College" is a really good band. Might I also recommend some Goldfinger, "Superman" is a really good song (came out on Tony Hawks Pro Skater). I really just listen to Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, and I'm trying to find a Mexican Ska band that my cousin likes.
I've only really heard one ska band and it's in Spanish. The band is called Maldita Vecindad.

Yes, Streetlight Manifesto is awesome. Catch 22 is probably my second favorite to Streetlight. My friend has two guitar picks from Streetlight concerts. The Toasters, Suburban Legends, The Slackers (really really good for relaxing), The Planet Smashers, The Pilfers, No Doubt, Operation Ivy, MU330, Mephiskapheles, Mad Caddies, Common Rider, those are most of the ska bands I have on my itunes.
P.S. I really want to hear the new Streetlight album already!

It always suprises me how many people like Ska, because it's almost an obscure genre. My experience is that either you haven't heard of Ska, you love Ska, or you're just a douchebag like PrettyHasItsPrice.
I'm also suprised Bandits of The Acustic Revolution hasn't been mentioned on here. They're another one of Kalnoky's projects, and their first album is set to be recorded after the release of Streetlight Manifesto's.

I just thought of another ska band we haven't mentioned. Even though they were Christian and they broke up in 2003, Five Iron Frenzy was really the first ska band I regularly listened to, and it's really the one responsible for my love of the genre. I wear my Five Iron Frenzy pin with pride, though I have to endure the ignorant asking me if I'm on the golf team.

Lyrics: A Wicked Hardcore Christmas
By: Big D And The Kids Table
"Have yourself a wicked hardcore christmas
You know those yankees lost
from now on the red sox are no longer cursed
Have yourself a friggin awesome christmas
I hope you totally hook up
call back rod, from high school that was always drunk
once again we're livin high school days
you know those wasted days of the old
hammered friends that are wicked fucked
they'll be pukein up on the floor
through the years we'll all be drunk in boston
doin Yeager bombs
call my brother bobby so we can all get so high
have yourself a wicked pisser christmas
let's watch nanna get drunk
remember last year when she passed out in your brother's trunk
have yourself a friggin awesome christmas
come and sit right here
don't be retarded let's shortgun another beer
shoppin drunk down in harvard square
or was it davis square
who cares?
nathanial hall can really suck my balls
but barbara rack is so cool
through the years we'll all be drunk in boston
rootin for the sox
go call my girl, i'm really way to friggin drunk
have yourself a wicked hardcore christmas
get your ass up and cheer
sing loud boston and raise your favorite pint of beer
and let's all wish the sox another kick ass year"

Heres to Life Lyrics - Streetlight Manifesto
How did Camus really die that night?
Were they right?
When he died was it really his time?
Or was it suicide?
And Holden Caufield is a friend of mine
We go drinking from time to time
and I find, it gets harder every time
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
Don't you stop!
Did you know you couldn't swim?
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win!
Hemingway never seemed to mind the banality of a normal life
and I find, it gets harder every time
So he aimed the shotgun into the blue
Placed his face in between the two
and sighed, "Here's To Life!"
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
Don't you stop!
Did you know you couldn't swim?
Back Off!
You're out on the street again
I'm not going to play if there ain't no way I'll win!
Hey there Salinger, What did you do?
Just when the world was looking at you
To write anything, that meant anything
You told us you were through
And it's been years since you passed away
but I see no plaque, and I see no grave.
And I can't help believing, you wanted it that way.
Vincent Van Gogh, Why do you weep?
You were on your way to heaven, but the road was steep
And who was there to break your fall?
We're guilty, One and All
And I don't know much, but I do know this
With a golden heart, comes a rebel fist
But I can't help agreeing with those that would not quit.
And it makes me sick when I think of it
All my heroes could not live with this
and I hope you rest in peace
Because with us, You never did!
And K.D.C., you were much too young!
And you changed my life!
But I draw the line at suicide!
Here's To Life!!
Dont be a fag, lets see you do better.

Ska is always going to be an underground music style. It got a bit popular with No Doubt, sublime, real big fish, Mighty Mighty Boss Tones, and the aquabats. I don’t think it will ever get that popular again though. I played in a ska band in high school. We opened for a few names in the ska scene. Real big fish, aquabats, toasters, we opened for Tone loc one time to which was kinda odd.
Some cool ska bands that I haven’t seen posted yet are. The Urge, Freak daddy, Janitors Against Apartheid, Professor Pun, and Adaboy skip (the drummer from the killers used to play for them)
Yeah dave when you start advancing from three chord songs and dead pan bass lines the whole world goes to shit. Wait, what?
I suggest checking out Mr Bungle (one of my favourite bands) then telling me I only appreciate 3-chord songs. Besides, give me a vocal melody as opposed to Tim Armstrong ranting at me like some cracked-up waster anyday. Which is what the majority of ska vocalists sound like. Throw some reggae vocals in there and I'd be cool with it. Like Sublime.

There's a band called Keepin' 6 comming down soon, they're pretty ska. They're playing with some locals, I think I'll check it out even though I'm not a ska fan (Not so much that I dislike the music, but that I just never got into it). Anybody ever heard of em?

...Or pretty much any other ska band, at least some of the time? I never liked Mr Bungle, but then that's personal taste I guess. And as for the whole music of satan thing, I'll just attribute that to the leadsinger/saxophanist of Capdown selling his sould for kickass Sax skillz. Ska vocalists don't sound like armstrong ranting, they sound like they're having fun.
Audioslave, What? Slave to Green Day and New Found Glory? Yeah, I like Dookie (who doesn't) and I bailed on the Smashing Pumpkins to see New Found Glory. Because NFG are more fun. I wouldn't say I'm a slave or a fanboy though. I mean, it's not like I set my name as them on the internet or anything...
Oh shit he's got you there Audio.
Oh and thanks this whole thread for getting me into ska.

For the record, I own one Audioslave c.d. I haven't listened to it in ages, like anybody else with half a brain, I'm a bigger Rage fan.
By the way, Quadros, how's middle school going? I bet you guys have very deep musical discussions there. I can imagine it now:

My favorite Ska(ish) band is The Flaming Tsunamis hands down.
There live shows are fantastic.
I've been meaning to look up some ska music, my friends listen to it a lot and played a few songs for me, and I gotta say it was good stuff. Can anyone list off a few ska albums that are really worth spending money on? (I'm practically broke :wail:, so I can't afford to just buy any ska cd without prior referrence)
Also, Five Iron Frenzy was awesome.

You should definitely buy How It Goes from Big D and, Turn The Radio Off by Reel Big Fish. Keasbey Nights by Catch 22 or Streetlight, which ever one is cheaper in your case. Those are the 3 ska albums that got me listening.

What follows is effectively the canon of Awesome ska:
Keasby Nights-Catch 22
Borders and Boundries- Less Than Jake
Our Live Album is Better than Your Live Album: Reel Big Fish
The Ruff Guide to Genre Terrorism- Sonic Boom Six
Songs of Innocence and of Experiance- Adequate Seven
Everything Goes Numb- Streetlight Manifesto
Duck and Cover- Mad Caddies
Strictly Rude- Big D and the Kids Table
The Story so Far- [Spunge]
Mission- Jesse James
Wow, my collection of awesome ska has grown, thanks to this thread.
Catch 22, very cool. Big D and the Kids Table, fantastic. As are Mustard Plug and Operation Ivy, though I really have had enough of Tim Armstrong now (Rancid, Transplants and Tim[e] Again).
Ska-P are amazing too.

I suppose i should have the piss taken out of me for being a member of the Rock Society; RocSoc. At Southampton University. Where I study law. :indiff: Honestly, I thought judging people based solely on a couple of bands the person in question likes was the sort of thing fifteen year olds do? Oh and by the way, rage are shite as well;
'Hey bro, I jus wrote two lines for a new song!'
'Did you write the whole song, or just those two lines?'
'Ah shit, just two lines'
'Well i wrote six minutes of guitar, I'll play that and you repeat those same lines OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER.'
Wow, inspired. The only thing that would improve that set up would be to replace the whiney rapper with an even crapper lyricist with a terrible voice!

But wait, this was a discussion about GOOD music.
JB Conspiracy (http://http://www.myspace.com/thejbconspiracy) have come out of pretty much nowhere to kick the UK scene up the ass and make us forget about the impending loss of yet another pioneer band for third wave, Capdown. These guys are mental, so yeah, check them out. Especially if you're in britain, ans they're touring wih Grown at Home and Random Hand on the Ska Trek: the Next Generation tour through September and October. It's going to be fucking mint.

People who know what the hell ska is!!! I could skank for joy. Seriously, there are all of seven people at my school that know what ska is, and I'm responsible for about five of them knowing.
My list of good ska bands has definitely grown thanks to this thread, though. Personally, I would recommend the standards: Streetlight Manifesto, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Toasters, Catch 22, etc. but there are some others that are pretty cool. I was just introduced to Suburban Legends, who are actually pretty cool. The Aggrolites, The Phenomenauts, Jeffries Fan Club, and Task Force Panda are all really good too.
Anyone have any suggestions/ideas for other ska bands I could add to my collection?

Thanks! I have some Mad Caddies and Reel Big Fish stuff, but I've never heard of Capdown.
On another note there's a band called Gogol Bordello, and I was wondering if anyone has heard of them and can tell me what genre they are. I think it's some sort of mix between ska and folk, but I'm not sure. Thanks!

I love Gogol Bordello. They refer to themselves as 'Gypsy Punk'. Nothing remotely ska about them is there, like no brass instruments?
Like 3 weeks till I see RBF in Newcastle, and Streetlight are supporting. My two favourite bands, in one showing <3

I know this thread is a bit old, but I just want to share a great ska band with you guys, Babylon Circus.
Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=685EeeXmmcQ&feature=related) and Link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY3CY8CFxBg&feature=related).
Now if you only listen to stuff like Streetlight then I'm not sure if this will appeal to you, but you gotta know that ska is a bit more than this skatepunk-crap. I mean, Streetlight and Big D are great bands and all, but as I said, that's not the total package.
You'll notice they sing in French. They also have lots of lyrics in English, but I chose these two songs cause I think the french language sounds really great with this sound. And I'm a German who hates French. Check them out, I believe they play some shows in the US in april.

But seriously, 'skatepunk-crap'? Have you actually listened to Big D? Sure they've got some pacy tunes, but shit son are they chilled a lot of the time. I'm by and large a third wave guy, but I do appreciate the chilled out sounds of bands like the King Blues.

Yeah, third wave is third, hence the name [and I'm not trying to sound like a bitch]. There's also original which started around the 1950s and 2-tone revival, which started at about the 1970s. It's not all one pure genre, it's fairly broken up.
So I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any decent shows in SoCal soon? The only thing anytime soon is a local show this Saturday with Task Force: Panda. I've been looking around, and it seems like there won't be anything for ages until Streetlight and Reel Big Fish come to play Bamboozle. Help?

Holy shit, I actually like the King Blues.
I've had a lot of really negative impressions of Ska bands, something about the fact all the skaters at my school listen too, and the vocals never appealed to me.
The King Blues however, are really pleasant to listen too, and just listening to them put me in a better mood.
Any bands similar to them?

Some good early ska:
The Ethiopians (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=53363640)
The Skatalites (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=191140529)
Dandy Livingstone (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=61866799)
Toots and the Maytals (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=37814952) Toots and the Maytals were when ska was transferring into reggae a bit more.
1st wave is easily my favorite ska, though 2 tone is good as well. If you like these guys buy the Trojan Ska Box set, also the rock steady box set.

Sorry, I'm not that great at detecting sarcasm when it's being broadcasted via computer screen, meaning it lacks all intonation and expression.

Yeah, man, I'm sure you know a thing or two about ska music, I'm just sick of people listening some Reel Big Fish tunes and think they know about ska. To me, this is like the lowest form of ska, it's like the American Pie soundtrack with trumpets and trombones. I saw Streetlight and RBF live the other day, and I noticed people weren't even skanking anymore, and if you tried to, some dick pushed you into the pit. That's kind of sad, I guess.
But anyways, there are still tons of really good bands out there, and from what I've heard so far, the King Blues might just be part of that group, so thanks for that.

Yeah that's why God/Iiro created all these wonderful smilies. But here's a quick guide to spotting sarcasm on the internet. Does someone who has other wise come across as knowledgeable and intelligent on the subject at hand just made a completely moronic statement in response to someone stating the complete fucking obvious? If so, he's probably being sarcastic. Also califirnia sucks for ska, or so I've heard. You live on the wrong side of the country, go to boston or Florida. That's the most help you're going to get, until warped ska's probably not coming anywhere near you.

I recently started a ska band (as in like.. A week ago), and we're probably going to do songs by 7 Seconds of Love, an English ska band. I recommend you check them out, 'cause they've got to be one of the best ska bands I've heard.
EDIT: Just to expound on what I said about the band earlier, it's got really good use of horns/saxes, and chord progression. Really pretty.
Most of the songs are just hilarious.
