View Full Version : Need help upgrading my computer.
So this is what I currently have.
Processor:Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz
Ram:1022MB RAM
Graphics Card:Radeon X550 Series 256.0 MB Display memory
HD:200 gb
I can myself put the thing together once the parts are chosen I just have a hard time picking out stuff that's compatible. I'm looking for suggestions into all 4 that would help me out. I think graphics card and RAM are foremost on the agenda as my card struggles playing CoH right now and personally I'd like another gig of ram.
Any suggestions?

What type of RAM and GPU does your motherboard take? And are you using SATA drives?
Ram would definitely be the easiest if not the cheapest upgrade for you.
If you are thinking of updating the processor, you are going to have to get a new motherboard.

I found it easier just to start from scratch for my computer.
Are you looking to game on it? What kind of motherboard do you have?

That's what kind of motherboard I have. This is a list of RAM it can take apparently.

Don't know how to find out what GPU it uses. I'm not using SATA drives now because I had one previously and it conked out one me and I had to buy what I could at the time.
Updating my processor isn't a necessity at the moment though I am looking into it for the future. My main concerns are the graphics card, RAM and hard drive.
This is what you would be looking for, http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052107965+1052308477+1052407862&Configurator=&Subcategory=147&description=&Ntk=&srchInDesc=
2 gigs would be noticeable and cheap, 4 gigs would probably be overkill for your processor and graphics card.
Yeah I don't wanna go 4 gbs just yet. I'll probably pick these up as I've heard good things about kingston.

As for the Video Card, I just bought a 9800 GeForce and it is the same quality as the 8800 but cheaper. I would definitely suggest it.

You really can't go wrong with any of the newer GeForce cards, I'm still using a 8600 (512 MB) and it runs Mass Effect on full. I would upgrade your motherboard if at all possible, to something that takes DDR2/DDR3 RAM, as yours is kind of being phased out and is generally more expensive than DDR2 RAM.

You can check that out and buy two of them if you want, I can vouch for Ultra's DDR SDRAM, I used it in my last PC with no problems at all.
If I do upgrade my motherboard I may as well start completely from scratch, which is an option I'm willing to consider.

You can get a mobo, graphics card, processor, and RAM relatively cheap. Since you already have disk drives and a case (I'm assuming) you can just pick up the essentials and use your old HD, CD/DVD drive, and case.
By relatively cheap I am talking 400$ if you want some powerful stuff.

That's what I figured it would run me around anyway for everything. I kinda want a new case though as the one I have is a piece of garbage and is falling apart. Thats really a secondary thing though.
Ok, new plan, build me a computer based around the 9800, the ram I linked, an at par or better processor and any motherboard that will work with it all. I also do need a new HD because even after clean up I only have 7gb free space left.
I can get the thing in parts rather than all at once so the cost isn't too much of a factor.

If you want to keep your DDR SDRAM and not get a DDR2 motherboard, it may be a tad hard to do.
Ah didn't notice I had kept the ddr sdram, scratch that than. 2 gbs should be good of whatever else.

Here is a nice little package that could be used right away, though you will have to buy a separate CPU fan, other than that all you would have to do is just buy the graphics card. Though it is AMD, and I don't know if you want to strictly stay Intel.

EDIT
You could pick up a cheap Hard drive somewhere, as this has SATA connectors and an IDE connector.
EDIT Again

A nice cheap hard drive.
EDIT Yet again.
This is the graphics card I am using, as I said before I have had no problems with it.

Doesn't really matter to me who makes the parts so long as they perform better. I don't know much about dual, or quad as this one seems to be, cores and all that so how much more effective will a 2.2ghz quad core be over the 3 ghz one I have now. I don't need to run multiple high resource programs at once so will it even be worth it?
Also do those guys ship to canada cause if not I'm boned.

Ah crap, I forgot you lived in Canada. You can replace the .com in this links with .ca to see your price. But I think the mobo combo I linked is out of stock for Canadian residents.
As to your processor question, you will see a vast improvement, like heaps and bounds with any dual/quad core over 2.2 GHZ as compared to your P4 processor.
Thanks I'll just go to my local computer supply store and ask them to order that stuff when the time comes, if they don't have it in.

-what kind of slots are on your mobo?
-what kind of RAM does your mobo accept?
-what CPU slot is your mobo?

I think you missed the part where none of that matters because I'm just making a whole new one. Also, that's all already been stated in here anyway.
