I just found out.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25322638/

George Carlin was a genius of a comedian, a wonderful social commentator, and an all around amazing person. I was fortunate enough to get to see one of his last live shows a little over a month ago, and I'm glad I did.

We'll miss you, George. Here's to your soul being stuck on a good roof.

He was arguably the greatest comedian to ever live and my personal favorite. I grew up watching this guy and I have to say it hit me very hard. He had a very awesome run and he will be missed.

I thought he had a little more left in him. He left too soon.

"[George Carlin] was just tapped last week by the Kennedy Center to receive this year’s Mark Twain Prize, a lifetime achievement award presented to an outstanding comedian. "

He deserves it, even post-humously.

George Carlin, really? Damn I actually liked him. R.I.P.

I always figured Carl Reiner would die before George Carlin.

Most of the time when I hear about famous people dying it's people I didn't care about, this sucks. He's not the kind of old guy that you ever thought would die, like jack Nicholson. Totally didn't see it coming.

Yeah, I came across that while looking for the article because I didn't believe it was true when I heard it. He seemed to have even more fight in his later stand ups.
He definitely deserves the award.

Holy shit, this was totally unexpected. That guy was a fantastic comedian and was great in movies. R.I.P.

To be honest, I could have done without his last two HBO specials. But I'll always have a place in my heart for Carlins.

RIP comedy. Now nobody funny is left.

Carlin was, without a doubt, one of the funniest, most ground-breaking and influential comics to have ever lived. He definitely has had an impact on me. I still flaunt the fact that I have a signed poster from his 2006 HBO special, “Life Is Worth Losing.”

Over the decades his career has spanned, a career he began before I was even born, he has shocked audiences around the world with his unique sense of humor. From his dark views on life to his outlandishly hilarious takes on death, Carlin has always had a specific point of view on the world - a point of view that has garnered him the accolade of one of the greatest stand-ups of all time. Something he very much deserved.

This excerpt from one of his books, “When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?” seems fitting for this occasion.MOMENT OF SILENCE

The custom of observing a moment of silence before an athletic event to honor dead people strikes me as meaningless. And arbitrary. Because, if you’ll notice, only certain people get this special treatment. It’s highly selective. Therefore I’ve decided that someday, when the time comes that every single person in the world who dies receives a moment of silence, I will begin paying attention. Until then, count me out. It’s ridiculous.
On that note, celebrate the life of this great man and great comedian by reintroducing yourself to some of his material. Might I recommend his “Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTyzTJTNhNk),” a routine he did way back in 1972 that he was so “obscene” for the time that he was arrested for performing it.

I'm a little depressed. He was fucking hilarious and I loved him. But he'd think we're all fuckbags for expecting him to never die.

Why can't death take the shitty celebrities that suck? Is there a reason why, death has taken actors and comedians like Heath Ledger, Brad Renfro, and George Carlin.

Why not let Osama Bin Laden, Fidel Castro and Carrot Top get the ax? I mean shit, there is no reason for genius like Carlin and Ledger to get cut down. I don't know, but we've had a lot of death in 2008, maybe death can take a holiday for a few months.

Wow, so very sad. He was a brilliant mind and, above all, a hilarious man. 'Religion is bullshit (http://youtube.com/watch?v=MeSSwKffj9o)' has to be one of the most fantastic things I've ever seen.

He'll be missed.

I just heard about this and I was quite shocked. It's weird, his wife (i think) just died not too long ago too, and then a few months later and now he's gone. Just like Johnny Cash, when his wife died, a few months went by and he passed away too.

It's as if Cash couldn't live without June. Maybe it was teh same with Carlin, even if they did say it was heart failure.

It's a shame. RIP.

I'll miss him. He was my favorite comedian. I've listened to almost all of his stuff but he's got so much material you have to have a lot of free time to get around to listening to all of it.

The only true comedian, coming up with and having the balls to perform them.
I have a feeling we will be seeing quite a bit more of Carlin however, both the unexpected and the known to come.

I really didn't expect this so soon. He seemed relatively healthy. I never sat down and watched one of his comedy specials, but I have seen most of his act and he's a funny guy, albeit too political sometimes.

This is why you shouldn't do drugs. You'll die at the young age of 71.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Carlin, but I appreciate his contribution to standup comedy. He paved the way and was a massive influence on a lot of the comedians I watch today.

When I found out, I was really sad. Then I realized that he'd probably be pissed that people are sad. He'd say something like "Get over it, pussies."

When I first heard about it this morning I couldn't believe it. George Carlin is the single most influential person in my life, without him I never would have even discovered comedy or entered stand up.

I could go on and on about the genius that is George Carlin but anyone that has posted in or is even reading this thread knows all about it.

Joe Bless you George Carlin.

He's the whole reason I want to become a comedian. I was lucky enough to see him live a little over a month ago, didn't know it'd be one of his last shows.

His stage presence was incredible; his skill with facial expressions and voice-changing was amazing, and his style of holding conversations between "two" people was something I'll never forget. It made him seem close to the audience, as if he were talking directly to each of us; not just performing.

R.I.P., George.

I've always been aware of George Carlin and I picked up "Class Clown" a little over 3 months ago and thought it was funny. I was astounded at how much material he has put out over the years and how he kept going. Everyone has to die at one point.

I can hardly say anything original here, but George was an absolutely phenomenal comedian and while you could hardly expect him to live to be 150, whenever he went would be far too soon.

Kind of strange as well, I'm about a quarter of the way through writing an audiobook I was inspired to write when I first heard When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?.

Rest in Peace, you will be sadly missed.

My sentiments exactly. One of the most influential comedians ever, and one of my favorites, to boot. Granted everyone has said everything already, so I'll just throw in my we'll miss you and be done with it.

Holy Shit, I almost shit my pants when I saw this.
George Carlin was definitely one of the best comedians of all time. I was always kinda pissed that he was so underrated and that most people hadn't heard of him but were saying Dane Cook is hilarious. I don't have a lot of role models really, but I really did admire him.
I always wanted to go to one of his shows, now I'll never had the chance.
Damn.

George Carlin was a great comedian, possible the best, and he will never be forgotten.

What makes things worse is that I found out about his death from his random-quote generator on Facebook.:wail:
