http://www.flashasylum.com/db/files/Writing/matt/demetri-martin/demetri-martin.jpgThis is Demetri Martin. He is a comedian. I've been an avid fan of Demetri for quite some time now. After sending him countless numbers of naked pictures and locks of my hair, I was thrilled to finally get his first CD/DVD release, These Are Jokes.

Demetri has a very distinct style of humor, usually involving airline travel commentary and the distinctions between white people and black people. His jokes are usually only a few lines long, much in the style of Mitch Hedburg, Steven Wright and Oprah Winfrey. It's a good thing, too, cause I don't have much of an atten

One of the funniest things about Demetri, though, is his hair, and the persona that goes with it as it waves across the stage as if to say "I'm Demetri Martin's hair, and I'm going to make you fucking laugh." It's wonderful. And one can't help but think of a certain ultra-popular band from the 60s when you look at that hair.

"What band" you ask? The Jackson 5, of course! At first glance, one would think his hair is styled after Tito, but it's probably based more on Jermaine. Tito's hair was a little more heavy while Jermaine's was really poofy and voluminous. It's really a toss up between the two. We know for damn sure, though, that it wasn't Jackie. Jackie Jackson. What a name. Good job at being original, Mom and Dad. Admittedly, they had no idea their family would become a music supergroup when he was born, but it's a crap name even if you aren't in show business. No wonder he lived in the shadow of the other jacksons (Michael, Jesse, President Andrew, Samuel L.) his whole life. It's a shame really. Poor guy.

Much like The Jackson 5, Demetri is quite musically-inclined. The DVD has several songs written by Demetri, as well as animations, photos and a copy of an old report card from the second grade. I guess he needed to prove he graduated or something. He did, after all, drop out of college. In addition to the random stuff is Demetri's Comedy Central special, which also includes commentary he did with his mother and grandmother, who make appearances throughout the CD and DVD. I really respect his decision to include these people in his work. If only more people would follow in these foot steps. Just imagine if Genghis Khan had taken his mother and grandmother into battle with him. Even he could have been as powerful, bloodthirsty and ruthless as Demitri.

The CD is filled with the usual Demetri-style jokes, as well as joke songs that are sure to make your ears bleed with comedic joy. A few of my favorite quotes so far are:

"I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades."
"I remember when I used to be really into nostalgia."
"I like digital cameras."
If you've never heard Demetri before, are an avid fan, or just really like The Jackson 5, These Are Jokes is a great pickup.

Without the style of his delivery many of his jokes wouldn't work.

Some of his jokes he hasn't researched or at least doesn't care. Example B batteries. There are B batteries.

Well, I find Demetri a very funny person for stand-up. In fact, he is my favorite stand-up guy, but seeing him tell the joke is what makes it funny. I was a little disappointed by the CD. The jokes took too long to come out, and the really funny ones were few and far between. check out his myspace and his standup though.

I think that guy is pretty damn funny, but I also agree that it is pretty much all in the delivery.

Leather sleeves = cool :facts2:

I feel like he is a very visual comedian. His charts and drawings in his stand up act are the best part.

The main reason I love Demetri is because of his delivery, you could have some very funny jokes but if you screw up the delivery, its just gonna be stupid.

USER WAS PUT IN TIMEOUT FOR THIS POST. (http://forums.explosm.net/bankamp/)
Reason: Fucking big bump

For some of his jokes this is not true, but the humor is more subtle without his delivery. But think back to any of your other favorite comics. Most of them are nothing without the delivery. Even the comics who are more drab and have no "real delivery". They tend to design their jokes around that drab monotone delivery, which can be just as funny when pulled off correctly, with humor that is as well just as subtle.

Personally I think Dimitri Is hilarious, he's up there with Mitch Hedburg for me. Its rare to find such low energy that makes you laugh so hard. You dont always have to be screaming in somones face like Dane Cook. Thats just his style of delivery though.

I dont have the whole CD but i have some of the routines on my iTunes. My favourite joke was the one about the squirrel and the bb gun in sames and opposites. i cried with laughter at that

Ugh, I really don't like him. I borrowed a friends CD. Terrible. So terrible in fact that I threw it out of my car window and told my friend I lost it and bought him a Mcdonalds as apology.

Also, Demetri Martin is an incredibly smart guy, having attended Yale University and then the NYU School of Law, of course dropping out of the latter to pursue a career in comedy. His humor is very cerebral, I don't think everybody gets it. I think he's hilarious. It's part delivery, part content, all Demetri.

He's actually my favorite living Comedian, and my third-favorite of all time.

About the same. He's definitely up there next to Mitch Hedberg and George Carlin in my list, I think. His musical talent impressed the shits out of me the first time I saw him.

I noticed that when I read Matt's comics, they both have very literal types of comedy. That clicks for a lot of people because Demetri Martin is a very different type of comedian and delivers everything from a different perspective and is fucking hilarious in doing so.

I saw him at like, 3 in the morning in 2007.
Wrote his name down on a piece of paper in crayon so I could look him up later.
I'm glad they didn't cancel his show; I like it better than that Jeff Dunham shit.
