The most manly instruments I can think of right now.
Does anyone have one? I've started playing round with an electric bass but I want an acoustic one. For portability and awesomeness reasons.
The Problem there is that there don't seem to be all that many in New Zealand, I can't really find even one. They aren't in the music shops I've been to so far. Interweb auction sites also fail me here.
Another thing, if anyone actually has one lemme know how it goes.

I've got a pretty solid Michael Kelley 5-string. It's acoustic, but it also has electric pickups for when you're playing wired but wanna keep the acoustic sound. Having an acoustic is awesome because, as you said, it's a lot more portable and convenient. I prefer the straight-up electric bass sound, but I still love my acoustic.
If you want to find one, I'd suggest the internet. That's where I got mine.

Acoustic bass guitars are like Communism and Anarchy: Great in theory, horrible in practice.
I've played my share of acoustic ones and horrible playability aside, you can hardly hear them.

Really? Even when you're just like I dunno, busking, or jamming with an acoustic guitar or something?
And is the "horrible playability" similar the a regular acoustic guitar? because compared to electric guitars they're difficult to play.

I found it pretty hard to hear the acoustic bass just when I'm sitting there by myself fiddling around with it. I mean, of course I could hear it but if I had been...I dunno, say 10 feet from it I doubt I'd have noticed it.
And I didn't really think about it being similar to an acoustic guitar in terms of playability, ha. That might have something to do with it but still, I hated the action on them.
Now I'm wondering if you have to have acoustic bass strings on it or if regular bass strings will work.

If you spend less than $2500 on an acoustic bass, you will not like the tone or the volume...
Unless you find a golden deal.
I have tested about 60 different ones, and everyone sounds different. Even if they are the same manufacturer. The only one I found I liked was about $3300 and I could not afford it. I played it for an acoustic gig for one night since I did not want to use my live rig. I seriously tried every acoustic I could find in Phoenix.
Good luck. I am still saving up for mine

honestly stick to electric. Acoustics aren't too good. they look good but don't pla too well. Unless they're double basses or something

Double bass is nice, I heard you can get em fairly cheap too :)
Problem is that they aint really portable.
I'd love to have an acoustic bass, I saw one that John Paul Jones (Bassist of Led Zeppelin) had, but didnt read any info about it.

Well you've not going to have super low action on any acoustic stringed instrument.
Well since everyone who's played one seemed to hate it I'm going to have to try it. I refuse to believe that the volume and sound is shit without at least trying it.
Also when you compare regular acoustics to electrics you aren't really going to go deaf from rocking out to an acoustic.

That is your best bet. Satisfaction with quality and tone is a very personal thing.
