View Full Version : A query to Londoners!
As you may know, we'll be in London on the 19th and 20th of July for the London Film And Comic-Con. My question to anyone who knows is...
Know of a good pub very near Earl's Court?
A get-together of Brit C&H fans and a hearty drink would be excellent fun. So if anyone local can come to a consensus on a good pub, we'll be there on Saturday night. Watch this space!

edit: PUB CHOSEN: http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub1562.html
RateBeer.com does not list any pubs in the immediate area - there are likely many close to Earl's Court but possibly none that have a diverse or quality selection of beer.
Nearby you have:
"White Horse on Parsons Green"
http://ratebeer.com/Places/ShowPlace.asp?PlaceID=739
1-3 Parson's Green, London, England

Maybe check out more of the central locations (some world class pubs) in the city Beer Guide for London: http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/MetroList.asp?mid=26

beerintheevening.com is a better site for finding pubs in London, imho.
There's a great little place called The Kings Head, just round the corner from Earls Court, but it can get quite packed out, particularly on a Saturday. Nice selection of decent beers in there, but quite expensive (£3.50ish a pint)
There's another pub opposite the station exit on Earls Court Rd, but that doesn't have a great selection. If you want something cheaper, there's a place called The Goose, up on North End Rd (about 10 minutes walk from Earls Court) -- they have a reasonable selection of lagers and ales, and are very cheap.
The previously mentioned White Horse has one of the best selections of beers in London, but again, quite pricey, and gets packed out on weekends, particularly if weather is good (they do a great barbecue outside).
If you want to head more central, and want a good selection of beers, try The Porterhouse in Covent Garden. It has *the* best selection of beers in any bar I've ever been in (including quite a few in Belgium).
Either way, read the reviews on beerintheevening, they're generally very reliable.

I would have to agree with the King's Head. I work not too far away on Kensington high street and have been in there on a number of occasions. They used to have table arcade games!
If you want a bigger outside area, the Devonshire Arms is about 5 mins further on from the King's Head and has a fairly decent outside section at the front (with heaters, in case it gets a bit chilly!)

Can I recommend the Drayton Arms. It's quite large, about 1/2 mile form Earls Court and has great beer and some outside space - more likely you'll be able to get a bunch of people in there on a Saturday night than anything on Earls Court Road as well.

There's a great place on Old Brompton Rd which is round the corner from Earl's Court. It's called the Troubador Cafe.

The place is pretty cool and they serve good food too. If you're visiting, it'd be a great place to check out.

I'm not sure of any good pubs as to be frank, I'm not a Londoner. However I am travelling up from Wales to the convention so I'd be up for a pint and a chat, would be cool to meet the explosm guys in a more... social environment.
Also, being Welsh I'm sure the English will agree I'd at least provide a source of comedy due to the many stigmas attached to my nations people :)

IF, everyone decided on a pub, or wherever, it would be a good idea to ring them before we all go there, no. Y'know, so they can get a few more staff on?
I don't fancy waiting all night for a pint, because it's some poor kids first night on his own, and is totally caught out by a massive group of well, frankly quite good natured people from the internet.
Just a thought.
I third The Troubador. I'm only going to be in London because I'm doing a study abroad trip--and on my one other trip to London, I tried out a few of the pubs, and The Troubador was definitely the best.
I'll be sure to be at the pub on the 19th! I can't make it to the convention, so this is a great opportunity to get to meet the C&H guys.
I think we'd prefer something immediately close and not a train ride away. We're staying at a hotel in a country we've never been to before; traveling around while drunk at night isn't the smartest thing for us to do.

O.K, can anyone tell me where the nearest tube station to Earls Court is?
The nearest is most likely Gloucester Rd.
And not to keep pimping my own choice, here, but The Troubador is literally right around the corner from Earl's Court, on Old Brompton Rd.

Agreeing with King's Head. I've only been there once or twice but good times were had.

are you serious?
Earls court? Woohoo, I work just up the road from there. Yep, closest tube is Earls Court tube station- if you let us know the name of your hotel though I can find something that is close. Otherwise I recommend you walk straight up the road from Earls court tube (taking a left) and theres several English pubs up the road- the nicest being The Abingdon Arms with outdoor seating :)

Lol, sounds good to me. I don't mind a small bit of Welsh based jest but it's when the sheep shagging line is constantly regurgitated it gets old and tedious.
Yes we have sheep, yes farmers have shagged them. Get over it, I live in the city ffs.
Swansea you say? Nice one, I have a lot of family there too and it's a good place to be.
Looking forward to seeing this pub thing resolved, I mean I'm not bothered really. Either way it's gonna be pricey (it's London) and like Matt said, drunken Americans wondering the streets of London may be comical but also sort of dangerous. I mean, what if they stumbled into the Thames and drowned? Then there'd be no explosm ever again!

Any consensus on pubs? being another dirty norf londoner, I'll just wait til it's decided, no input to give...
But surely part of the London experience is getting drunk and falling asleep on the tube only to wake up in Uxbridge/Sheffield.

I recommend the Generator hostel- its a 'party' hostel so full of young aussie tourists and drunk people lol, but its fun, cheap if you book ahead - £15 a night to share rooms, and they have a bar, pool table, breakfast included :) Its also in central london- russells square- so not far to travel! As for the guy saying he cant get tickets cos they are too pricey- they only costs £7 for the after 11am!!! Thats cheaper than a movie!

Hello sabrina, fancy seeing you here!
The one you mean where all the IC students go to is the Queen's arms or Queen's head, i can't really remember. It hasn't got loads of space inside but its in it's own courtyard so it's fairly cool.
Best pub in notting hill is the Earl of Lonsdale on Portabello Road. Also good for a laugh because you see it in the god-awful hugh grant film "Notting Hill"
That would be pretty decent because it's a quick trip on the 328 bus (or an even quicker trip on the tube)
It's also well cheap and easy to get to for everyone coming from any part of london.
But for actually IN Earl's court i'd say the Troubador.

On the topic of drinking, is absinthe legal in London? If so, any of the close by bars serve it?
CharlieH
07-13-2008, 5:16 AM
No. It's not legal anywhere. One of the ingredients in it, if drunk too much, can potentially make you go blind.
natalie137
07-13-2008, 5:59 AM
In the decade of 1990 an importer realized that there was no UK law regarding its sale, which meant that Absinthe was never banned in Great Britain, and no other limitations were applied than the standard regulations governing alcoholic beverages. This fact catapulted Absinthe, which became available again in the UK for the first time in nearly a century, although flagged with a prohibitively high tax (usual in the United Kingdom) reflecting the high ethanol content. Not only in the UK, Absinthe was never banned in Spain or Portugal, which continued producing the drink until today.

Absinthe is legal, and the ingredient you're talking about is wormwood and was last used in main stream absinthe years ago. It has hallucinogenic properties and can mess with your eyes etc. It's what Vincent Van Gough used to drink and what made him go a tad insane and cut off his ear.
You can get absinthe in most pubs though, but it'll be 60/70% tops. Over in eastern Europe you can still get absinthe that is like 80/90% and some which still use wormwood, but obviously that's not very legal.
That's me done, perhaps a comic about absinthe and it's turbulent history would be a good idea?

I stayed right on Earl's Court, about two blocks from the Earls Court tube station. Right outside the tube stop on your right, about a street or two over, is the Prince of Teck pub. Great space to watch a game of footie over a London Pride,Strongbow, or Honeydew. Their fish and chips are good too.
If you turn right out of the tube station, you can walk about two blocks until you come across the Blackbird pub. This pub was my favorite, and gets quite friendly around 8 pm or so. The bartenders are really friendly, and they love to talk. If there's a beer you want to try, they make recommendations and give you free samples if you're not sure.
hope that helps!

We can take a road trip to Steve Irwin's gravesite and stick a petrified stingray barb into the soil.
