View Full Version : Tough Situation

Alright, I posted a thread awhile back on how I moved out on July 1st and I'm living with a friend at the moment. The rent all together is about 1200 dollars a month split between us, and my friend barely makes his rent on time ever.
We've recently been arguing over the stupidest things and it's pissing me off. Recently, my mother pays the cable bill for us as help, and she came across about 10 movies ordered on pay-per-view. When she confronted us, we denied it, but my friend declared he tried ordering a movie and got porn instead. I honestly don't know how to order movies and I don't plan on it, so I'm honestly innocent of this crime, where as my mom believes its possibly roommate, Chris. After I told him, he's like `I`m changing the cable to my name and paying for it myself.` Keep in mind, he never has money for food, I have to buy it.
I want to move out, but I don`t want him to become stuck with a rent he can`t afford. Moving out was supposed to be a blast, and it was for awhile, until I was basically forced to live with Chris. Then it all went to shit.
Any suggestions on how I can handle this in the best possible fashion?

I know exactly where you are, cuz I've been there once and am almost there again.
And not to sound discouraging, but last time I ended up moving out from the place, and this time, me and my roomate have both just got better jobs so things are starting to smooth out.
What I would do is sit down with him and explain the situation one on one with him. Tell him you don't wanna leave him high and dry, but that's what he's doing to you by not having the money for bills. If he trusts you with money, maybe he could give you money out of every paycheck, and you take care of the bills.
Worst comes to worst, you gotta worry about yourself. Find somewhere you can afford easier with someone whos a little more reliable. It sucks, but thats what ya gotta do sometimes.

The only problem with talking with him, is he`s very arrogant. He`s 25 and I`m 17, so he has the whole `I`m wiser than you are, so shut your fucking mouth` attitude when it comes to discussions that are against him.

Tell him to stop being a whiny bitch and pay his fucking bills or you're moving out. Go live with your parents. It's cheaper. And what do you want cable-porn for when you've got the internet. Honestly, people can be stupid.

I'm in agreement with InTransit. Talk with him completely seriously first, but at the hint of arrogance become very heavy handed and give him an ultimatum. Have you been friends with Chris for a long time or did you just meet him while looking for a roommate? If it's the latter, it should be a bit easier to do this without feeling guilty.
If not, you still need to do it. He's dragging himself down no matter what, there's no reason for you to go with him. Demanding a change is the best way to go.

Well if he's got that attitude, leave his ass out to dry.
We'll see how much wiser he is in a month or 2.

Yeah.
I'll move in with you guys and help you pay for rent, infact.
We can wear leather thongs.
And you can smear me in marmalade.
Not really.
:indiff:
Piss on his face in the middle of the night in a batman costume.
I second this motion.
Also, tell him to wise up, or you're gonna move out or something. If he's so much wiser than you, as you say he acts, then tell him that you, being 17, is making him look a douche-bag because he cant take care of himself. If he's like anyone, or maybe any guy, they love their pride, and if it gets sheistered away from them, it can tear us apart.

Try copying him, or even do it over the top, be like even more arrogant and lazy, stop caring about the bills, you always have your parents' place to move in to in case you get kicked out. Maybe he'll think that as the older one, he'll have to do something and get a job.

What does he do with his own money?
Leave this topic on your computer screen at a time when he might walk past, see if he gets the fucking hint now that you've had to resort to telling us on the internet about it.
God what a shitty roommate, seriously though definitely lay an ultimatum on the table.

You could've just told me if you want me to move out, Tony
Who is the lease holder of the place?
I live with a good friend. The only time we started having problems was when we started buying stuff together.
Just buy your own shit, look after yourself.

So, what is the problem of telling him to shut the fuck up and move out?
Lynley
08-31-2007, 9:42 AM
Yeah, depending on whose name is on the lease, this could get messy. If you did sign the lease, and you leave and stop paying rent, and then he also stops paying rent, you're both equally liable. The landlord could choose to sue just you for the full amount if they think you're the one who will be able to pay. Then you'd have to take him to court to get half the amount.
Anyway, the best way really is to sit down and talk to him.

Tell him you might move out and he can probably handle the rent. If he objects, tell him to start paying his fucking share then, because you might just pack your stuff and leave him to live alone. Then if he tells you to go ahead with it, start looking for other places to live and he'll see it as a major threat to his piece-o-cake lifestyle and try to stop you.
If he doesn't try to stop you, then he genuinly doesn't give a shit and you should go. Make sure to tell him at some point he's a "fucking joke of a grown man".
That's what I'd do anyway.

So, what is the problem of telling him to shut the fuck up and move out?
The problem with telling him to move out is the fact he's lived there for a long time, and I've only lived there two months. He's lived there about 3 years before I did. I met him about 2 years ago, he's a choreographer. He asked me to join his dance company and then move in with him to help teach in Toronto. I decided it was best idea, because I'm also going to school in Toronto for dance, so I figured it saved me the trouble of searching for a place.
Savaril - Suck dick.
Jiggz - Lease is in both our names, but two different rents. Like, I have to pay about 575 a month, and Chris pays 575 a month. If he doesn't pay his rent, it doesn't affect me house wise. It effects me by him bitching about it all the time.
I_Smell - see, I wanna mouth off, but he's the owner of the dance company I'm in, and I feel that if I up and move out, he'll boot me out. I know no one cares about that, but it's something I want to pursue, so yeah.
Cristo - he teaches dance, so he gets paid at the most random times, and when he gets him money, he pays off debts he owes.
Yes, get this, he's in the hole about 6000 dollars all together, yet still continues to blow majority of his money on taxi fare when he could take the bus and subway.
And now he wants to buy a big screen tv off our Landlord for 400 dollars, and who do you think is gonna buy it? Me. Who do you think will consider it his own? Him. It just pisses me off a lot. Sorry to vent like this, but it's good to hear suggestions from people.

You're not telling us everything, are you.
Obviously, if this guy is milking you for money, you move out.
Now if he's your employer, and the reason he's keeping you on the payroll is so he can get his money back through extortion, get a different job with a boss who's not an asshole.
By the way, he's not your friend.

First thing:
- Start looking for jobs
- Start looking for apartments
Don't tell him anything, just have stuff lined up. That way, when the final straw breaks your back, you're set to move on with your life.
Also, a little note of wisdom from someone who's a bit older (I'm sure you never get tired of hearing that :)). You're 17. You have a LOT of your life ahead of you. If things aren't the best at the moment, don't fret it. If you have to scrounge for a bit, don't worry about it. Things will most likely change quite a bit for you w/in the next 5 years... much less the next 10, so don't feel like snubbing one opportunity will be your downfall.
Finally, when the time comes, reach down and grab a pair.

Get a receipt. Just have the landlord write one up real quick that you and the landlord both sign. That easy. Then, if one of you do end up moving out and he tries to claim the TV, whip out the receipt. Good idea for all your stuff, actually, since this guy sounds like a douchebag.

Just tell him your gonna move out, then give him a few weeks or a month or something to get some money up. Then tell him that either way your moving out, he should get a job, he's freakin' 25. If he still complains that he won't have enough to pay the rent, maybe give him a bit of money to get going. If he still complains, tell him to live on the street because nobody loves him and he needs to stop mooching of of people and make a fucking living. :)

I go back tonight (I'm at my moms place cause I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled a few days ago) so I'll update once I've had the conversation with him. Thanks for the suggestions.

Correction, Danceschool: The Musical.
Easy solution: don't buy shit he asks you to buy. Get a mini fridge in your room and put your food in it and a lock on it or something. He can't really do anything if you don't buy him shit, and if he does kick you off the dance whatever for it, he's just an immature jackass and you shouldn't want to be with his dance studio in the first place.

I know that it is difficult to put up with such stuck up room mates. I think moving out will be the ideal choice here, because he's never going to change for the better. If he's not able to pay the rent all by himself, he might as well move out to find a place which is much cheaper.

If your buying his food, buy him modest crap.
I'm sure he'll be fine and dandy with a diet of Lentils, Rice&Pea and Beans.
