View Full Version : Animal Crossing: City Folk

Straight from E3 2008 is Animal Crossing Wii. The world is split into two places: the city and the town. The city houses stores and the like, and apparently have new shops. The town is where you and your neighbors live, just like in the previous versions. You can make your character even look like your Mii apparently, and you can use Wii Speak, a new peripheral that allows you to talk to other people playing the game. Animal Crossing: City Folk will be out by the end of 2008. Judging by the previous games, probably in December I think.

Oh my god I'm going to love this. I always thought the Animal Crossing towns were a little small, so it's going to be great.
EDIT: Your links aren't working.

Wait, am I mistaken in thinking that Animal Crossing looks really gay?
I'm not trying to be funny, but from the adverts and pictures it seems like a real girly girls girl game. Even on British TV they only had women playing it in the ads.

Fuck you, get back in your closet, animal crossing is one of the best games ever made, and this looks to keep that going.
And I wonder if Wii Speak will carry over into other games? Me and my friends on SSBB are having to go into Skype to talk to each other while playing, which is a little irritating.

Links fixed I'm retarded :goofy:.
I hope it will too, probably only into future games though. But I'm really really excited for Animal Crossing Wii. Fuck off Cristo. One of the things I'm hoping is implemented is other people in other states and stuff living in your town among you. They said it could be a MMO type of thing. There's not enough information yet :frown:

Also in the video I watched, I could have sworn I heard the guy say something like '...and how you create your town...' Does this mean we actually get to place our own neighbours/shorelines/cliffs etc? Because that would be a mindblowingly good idea.
HappinessMan
07-15-2008, 3:07 PM
Yeah that would. That's the main reason why I wanted to hack my town in the AC:WW DS game. I wanted to make my own town sooooo bad. I do kinda like the randomness though.

07-15-2008, 3:12 PM
Yeah it made it exciting, but at the same time, some of the placements were just stupid. Too many bridges and irritating little tiny peninsuas could ruin a town, and I always wanted a 2 storey-town but never got one :frown:
I wonder what buildings there will be in the town though? There'll be a town hall without a doubt, I just wonder whether we'll see a tip, and a police station and Nook's especially. If there isn't a Nook's, how will the story start?
Also, I'm worried going to the city will be a completely pointless affair eventually, or at least long winded. What if you only need one tiny item, and you have to go through all the irritating dielogue and loading to get to the city? Booker and the other policedog in Wild World pissed me off enough, especially accidentally choosing the wrong thing and having to start over :argh:
HappinessMan
07-15-2008, 3:49 PM
Yeah, thats how my current AC:WW town is. Two bridges to cross to get to Nook's from my house. I think the town will be used for a lot of neighbors (like 12ish I bet). I bet it will be huge too. I wonder if Nook's will be in the city. I'm really excited to see what the city is like. The whole gate thing should be simplified, AND NO FUCKING FRIEND CODES. I will flip a bitch if we have to do that stuff all over.

But then someone pointed out correctly if you can go into anyone's town without permission, it is so damn easy to wreck up the place, even accidentally.
Maybe only allow free access amongst people on your friends list, or let you make your own list of people allowed?
And I'm worried the city will be pointless, it will have the shops in, but I'll only realistically use the Auction House and maybe one or two others. Never the clothes one or shit like that. I bet the museum will be there too, which sucks, because you'll have to take a huge trek just to deliver fish/fossils/etc and to see them too.
I'm just worried they'll move everything to the city, and so everything will feel empty and stretched out, all in the name of 'more depth'. Why not just put everything into a bigger town?
HappinessMan
07-15-2008, 4:07 PM
In my opinion, it will feel like one big town, just with two separate districts. I think the friend code issue can be resolved. I do like the free access among friends, but even friends can fuck up your town. They could implement a flagging system, where an offender will be "flagged" and not allowed into towns which don't allow flagged people, or something like that.
I'm curious to see what the new shops are, because they could make or break the city. A new environment is cool, but only having Nook's, the Able Sister's or the Museum would make it pointless.
I'm sorry but this doesn't look any different from Wild World than a few extra things in the city mode and a 4 player option.
They've could thought up a bit for a franchise that hasn't changed since the N64.

Well, we don't have a lot of information yet. It always seems to be the same way when they release one of them, never hyped and really hush hush for awhile. I really hope we can get Explosmers to live in one big town together. That would be cool.
http://wiimedia.ign.com/wii/image/article/889/889736/animal-crossing-city-folk-20080715111433654_640w.jpg This seems to be the only screenshot I've seen so far of the city.

Analog rocks, and more than 4 people would be cool but would use up a hell of a lot of space, especially in fishing or something
Would be minted fun though, all of us, as roomies :hmm:.
And NVM, why change it when it's such a good formula already? I'm happy to just keep eating it up, with one or two little changes each time, like a new fruit, or new furniture set. It's all good
HappinessMan
07-15-2008, 4:58 PM
No it doesn't :argh:. Yeah, I hope if they do implement roommates, we'll all have seperate houses to visit. That would be the tits. I really like the Wii Speak idea, I hated having to type on the DS to talk with people.
I'm really hoping Explosmers get this, because the only time I've been online in the game was with family or some little kid from some Animal Crossing Fansite :indiff:

Oh AnimalXing.com :hmm:
Thing I'm worried about with the Wii speak is how sensitive it will be. Because I play a lot when my parents are asleep, I have to talk quietly, and a headset lets me do that and be heard at the same time. But with this being miles away, what if it doesn't pick me up? :wail:
HappinessMan
07-15-2008, 5:16 PM
I wonder how good it will be too. I would have preferred a headset, but Nintendo likes to do different things I guess.

It's Kris at 0:18 :fmita:
And it looks like the city really is only 4 or 5 shops with a few empty shell buildings. Lame.
But on a brighter note, I did see a stage in the coffee house, looks like KK is back performing. Hopefully it'll be more often a week, because I sometimes work saturday nights :wail:
All I want back is Joan. Them turnips made a crazy profit.
Now I love Animal crossing just as much as the next guy, but I think it should stick the the DS. I haven't played the GC version and I don't plan to, but Animal crossing really is much more fun when you are watching tv or a movie; doing something else besides have your sole concentration on the game.
Hopefully the city will be different enough to seperate it form the other two animal crossings, because so far it looks like more of the same.

I really hope the city is more than they showed. I'm starting to fear NVM is a little right after I saw the trailer. Most of the stuff we've seen was stuff in the old games.

You ought to play the GC version.
It looks pretty cool, I haven't played the gamecube version but I'm told it's a very fun game.
Also of interest is that peripheral. Surely if that technology has been released for the wii some third party can mod it so it is actually a headset? Seems pretty possible to me. Also up to 4 people in one building.
I'm so glad they've made the graphics so much better from the last 2! FUCKING SARCASM

I'm irked by the fact they stuck with the WW viewpoint, the rotating ball effect. I would have much prefered the GC version.
Also, they'd better put balls in this. Would make online so much better.

Looks pretty sweet, but then it also looks almost exactly the same as Wild World, minus a few new shops and stuff. When it comes out we should all live in the same town, if that's possible. Voice Chat seems cool, but they'll probably do something stupid like filter "no-no" words.
this is not a post
07-15-2008, 6:34 PM
I doubt it will be sophisticated enough to censor out words. It is only a microphone after all.
I can see how it doesn't seem much different from past installments of Animal Crossing. But it's not really a game that you can change in terms of gameplay... you can really only make it 'fatter' and 'larger'.
But fuck yeah! Animal Crossing for the Wii!
HappinessMan
07-16-2008, 1:57 PM
Yeah, a city is probably the biggest change in Animal Crossing since Online Multiplayer. As Spud said earlier, why change the basic formula for the game if it's already good? I am worried that I'll get bored with it quickly like Wild World. I still play it now and then, but the GC game had me hooked for months.

The links don't say anything.
All they mention are the cities and town, they don\t actually mention what the fuck the game is about. If it even is a game.
And then it says something about Wii Speak which I didn't bother to read.
It looks like a socialising website personified into a game.

That's all Animal Crossing is. :indiff: You sell items to Tom Nook to pay off your house. If you're looking for more than that in a game, don't bother playing this.

If it's anything like WW, you'll use online 90% of the time sheerly for profit, be it other towns' fruits or for an exceptional turnip price. If you don't go online for these, you're missing out on a lot of the game.

I really liked the one of the gamecube which is strange because the game isn't really about anything. It did get kinda boring after you payed Nook back everything so I hope they have more of a campaign type thing like that. I just hope that they just don't fuck it up like they did with the sims or whatever they called it on the Wii.

It got shit, that's what happened.
Umbra's right. A little more 'campaign' would be nice this time, like, after paying off Tom Nook, you could perhaps buy a second house in the city or something. As long as you have one eventual objective it'll still have a little bit of direction which would stop it going stale so quickly.

As another quick note, the maps again are generated randomly, though they're the same size as previous games. You can select from one of four houses when you move in though, each being positioned around various regions of town, but you won't see a larger world than previous Animal Crossing games.
Fuck. Although, choosing from 4 around the town instead of all in one plot is a nice idea.
And he mentioned lack of motion controls? Good thing for me, because you can just BET that after months of stalking a scorpion or something else rare as fuck, you'll go near it, swing and it won't register.
And as if there's no GC controller compatibility? I was really hoping there would be.
HappinessMan

Yes, I do believe it was confirmed somewhere that you can have 4 people living in your house/city, whether it be local or online.
EDIT: Okay, maybe I was wrong, 'cause this says that 4 people in your household, like in the other ones, can join in, although you can have up to 3 people in your town, so I'm going to assume by 'in your town' they mean walking around in your town, not just living in your town?

Wow, it comes out tomorrow. I remember reading about this last year and wishing it came out tomorrow. I played the gamecube and DS Animal Crossings, and I did really enjoy them both. I'm just afraid that this one won't really be fresh, and you won't get the same replay value or hours of playtime that the others bought. Well - I don't have a Wii anyway, so whatever. I would get one, but the online I hear is terrible so I wouldn't be playing it so much, might as well just get some new games for my 360.
Urser
11-16-2008, 12:39 AM
I'm "getting" the game now. So I should have it sometime this week hopefully.
Also, you don't transfer items from WW, only your character (which is a kick in the teeth); but your catalog from WW gets transfered over so you can rebuy all your old stuff you had whenever you want. It would have been great if you could take your stuff with you, but I guess it's better than having to wait for events and rare items to appear all over again.
Benjaman
11-16-2008, 10:15 AM
I'm hoping on going out today or sometime this week to get it.
And Urser, the problem with that is, some of the rarest items that I have from WW are the ones you can't buy from the catalog. :frown:
Matterialize

Why would you want to just transfer all your items over, anyway? You'd get the game and immediately sit there already owning everything you want.
Haven't played the GC version in a long time, but the whole point of that game was to pay off and furnish your house.
Benjaman
11-16-2008, 1:26 PM
Well, I'd just transfer all my clothing and accessories so I'd look cool. Everything else I'd re-collect.
And it was the same premise for WW, and I'm assuming for this as well.
