View Full Version : Left 4 Dead
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5b/Left4Dead_Windows_cover.jpg
Left 4 Dead is an online multiplayer co-op, survival horror, first person shootan' game devolved by Valve Corporation and being released for the PC and 360 on Nov. 4(NA) and 7(EU), 2008.
The gameplay involves the players being one of the four set survivors, in which the players need to go from Point A to Point B and fight off a number of zombies on their way. Everytime you play a different scenario the way zombies attack are randomized so the experience is always different.
There's also a deathmatch mode in which the players play as a special type of zombies or something.

Everyone loves zombie mod on CS:S (and probably 1.6), so Valve sat there and went 'Hey, let's do it for reals.' Looks fuggin sweet.
I remember reading about this awhile ago. In multiplayer, the player zombies will get to choose from different zombie classes, each with their own different strengths and abilities. That zombie-Hulk-gorilla lookin guy is probably one of those.

Oh man this looks sweet. A definite 360 buy for me. Does anyone know anything about that "witch" thing?
That "witch" thing is a highly aggressive old hag who attacks you if you make too many noises or turn your light on around her. She will pounce at a single person and kill him/her pretty quickly.

I would just like to mention that that is the most ugliest cover I've ever seen.
Oh yeah, and the whole being a zombie thing sounds really cool
This game looks really sweet, as do most things valve makes. I had a few questions though. Can it be played with less that 4 players? Is there an offline or lan mode? Is there any actual story line (such as in HL2) or is it just mindlessly killing zombies (not that there's anything wrong with that)?
The part where you can be zombies or whatever it is sounds really cool too.

Well you can play with bots which means you can play offline. You can Lan play for PC, not sure if you can for 360(but since you can lan on TF2 for 360 I'm guessing you can).
I don't know if there's even a story but they've mentioned things liked NPCs so maybe.

You'd think that they'd make it a left hand. :ahe:

I didn't think that Tf2 was that bad on the 360. I can't wait for this game, but how will the communication work for the 360, will it be headset or just the menu? Anybody know? And I can not wait to be a zombie, sounds awesome.

How would communication work without headsets on a console? They would have to be crazy not to have voice communication in game for the consoles. Thinking about it now, this may be a better purchase for the 360 because it will always play differently. I was worried because it is a valve game which are always better on PC, and the availability of mods and free online on PC. Plus, the only friend I know who is getting this is getting it for PC. I guess I am just still skeptical about how the online community will be on 360.

I don't see how they could mod this though, add more guns or faster zombies? I don't see how they could totally change it like with the other valve games. I think that it will have plenty of community, no matter what I can always find about 15-20 Tf2 games, and this game looks better to me so there will always be games going.

He said zombies are usually slow and stupid, so I gave him an example of when they are fast, like the ones in Left 4 Dead. I also don't really get what the second part of your post means, but I think it has to do with not being able to predict when they are dumb, I can try to fish out the developer interview if you want.
edit: Wait, reading it again that isn't really what you meant, I think it has to do with knowing when they will turn insane? Either way I can get the developer interview so you don't have to argue. I am just going by what he said in the interview.

The only reason they made them fast was probably so it would be less predictable. If they were just super slow they would be too easy to defend and predict what they were gonna do.

yeah nothing is more scarier than having a bunch of zombies run at you, slow zombies are not really scary at all, and if you add slow why not add stupid and retarded. It wouldn't make much of a game, I just really hope that the scenarios don't suck, I mean a game where you just get here and there is not much of a game either. I really hope they add some more too it.

Those zombies are terrifyingly fast. In the video in Tempest's link, at 2:05, the zombie fucking leaps twenty feet through the air like a bullet, tackling one of the players. :wail:
The only thing that bothers me about this game is that they use "4" instead of "for".
It's to represent the 4 that are left behind for better or worse, or, for dead. It's a double play on words and turn-a-phrase. So more grammatically understandable, 4 left for dead.

I must have taken out 20 of them with it. Apparently though, the sound attracts other zombies, because holy shit I got swarmed. I also set off a car alarm, which resulted in an even bigger swarm.

Okay so me and Matterialize just played with a couple of randoms through the two levels that the demo gives you, and I could already see the dynamic functionality at work. Supposedly everything is supposed to be dynamically generated (Kind of like Spore), so no two playthroughs are the same. I went to go snag a pipe bomb from a spot I had found on my solo playthrough, only to discover it wasn't there. A small weapons cache had also been moved further into the level, much to my dismay. It's awesome, but to be honest I don't see myself playing these two levels over and over, I'm probably done with the demo until a couple more people here get it (So we can do some 4-person without randoms), or until the game comes out.
For the most part my computer can't run this(despite running TF2), so if anyone has a demo code for the Xbawks version they should give it to me.

Ho-ly-fuck. Me and 3 friends just decided to run it through on Expert/Insane/whatever and it was fucking ridiculous. When I played solo earlier I was activating the car alarms and shit on purpose just to kill more zombies, but on expert you HAVE to avoid them. It is such good fun. So many times I got jumped, playing with my jaw on the floor. Great graphics, real dingy, and the AI ain't half bad. Voice really helps when playing online.
When I watched the gameplay videos I thought little of the mass amounts of zombies attacking the players. When they are attacking you (on expert!!!) it's time to shit yourself and hope you don't run out of bullets.

Finally beat Expert after retrying the subway level about four times. We kept getting raped by a Tank. Is there a tactical way to kill them, or is someone pretty much guaranteed to die every time?
It's pretty cool when people start working together though. Stuff like covering your buds, crouching when you're in front so people behind you can get a better shot, y'know. I'm also surprised at how quickly my teammates react to one of us getting constricted/downed, I figured I would see a lot more assholes playing this.
I saw a video on the 411 site on how to bug a tank and kill it...

Me and Matterialize are awesome and we trounced through it on advanced. We didn't want to try expert with two NPCs because they can be pretty useless at times, though we did find the ultimate strategy for the witch, if she's in the final room of the 2nd chapter with the machine gun turret. Matt got on the turret, and I lobbed a molotov right in her face. He mowed her down before she even got halfway to us.
The tank, on the other hand, facefucked Zoey because she tried to fight it head on. Then it downed me and I capped it with my pistol until that bitch fell. We ran into so many fucking boss zombies it wasn't funny.
Matterialize
11-08-2008, 7:42 PM
Also, the last room is cake on any difficulty if you do this:
1. Find the two gas cans and place them a respectable distance from the gun on either side.
2. Get one guy on the gun and everyone else in the room.
3. Flip switch, shoot both gas cans.
4. Zombies can now only travel over the generator, which is covered by the guy on the gun easily, and up through the floor, which has the other three teammates on it. Smooth sailing.
Tank strategy which apparently works but I haven't tried yet:
1. Pull the tank.
2. Climb on top of something. (car, dumpster, whatever).
3. Jump off while the tank tries to climb up.
4. Jump back on as the tank jumps down.
Everyone's shooting it while this is going on, of course. They're dangerous, but slower at moving vertically than you are.

So, the demo is now available to everybody. Anyone gonna download it and join the fight?
I totally outsmarted a tank earlier today in the subway tunnels. So he pops outta nowhere and kills two of my teammates, right, (both had low health) and chases after another guy, knocking him to the ground. I threw a molotov to distract the tank, but that didn't work, so I ran up and melee'd him to get his attention. I hopped a railing and lead him back downstairs, then made him chase me in circles around the ticket booth. It was at that point that I began putting shotgun rounds in his face. Worked like a charm, fucker never laid a hand on me.
I was playing on expert with a friend and 2 bots and while walking in one of the train, a horde of zombies appear. Easy enough we think, because they are easy to spray with your gun and kill in such a small room. My friend starts yelling and I turn around noticing a tank.
We died in seconds.

Sounds like what happened to me not long ago. Kept dying at the end of the demo.
I love this game, it's almost better than Dead Rising when it comes to Zombie games. Even though, the guys in this game don't seem like Zombies. But I still love it. It's hard as hell sometimes, but it doesn't piss me off for some reason. I love getting swarmed by a fleet of them and come out with minor bruises or sometimes your whole team gets raped at once because someone decided to throw a Molotov while we were getting bum rushed.
I only wish the demo had more than one level. It seemed way too short. But I am definitely picking this up. Not sure if I am going to get it for PC or 360, though. I've been playing the demo on the PC.

Yeah, I've yet to beat it on expert due to the fact that every time I try I get stuck playing with morons. Some people can suck at the game pretty well, but playing on single-player ruins the fun of the game, because they usually always have a medkit on hand and they'll save you just as soon as you get pinned. Doesn't really seem horrifying. But online you think "Is anyone going to get to me in time?!"
The demo didn't really scare me, but there was this one time where I thought I was fucked. We were down in the subway, going down the escalator things and I was sticking behind everyone. Eventually they started to go down the ramps and I took one step forward when a smoker behind me grabbed me and scared me then pulled me up the ramp and I died. I guess you'd have to be playing to feel the scariness. I spectated for a good while before being randomly spawned somewhere.

Yes, it's irritating when people decide to ditch the whole 'teamwork' thing and just rambo it. On the other hand, though, you don't want to stick around in one place for very long. I hear the AI director is pretty unforgiving to people who wait around in the same place for awhile.

I tried it on Expert difficulty on the demo with CPU players. We did decent until we got to the Subway and the Hunters and Witches got us. Witches are fucking evil. Never got to complete it. I gave up, couldn't even get to the last room.

Yep, you'll be able to be any of the boss zombies EXCEPT witches. Those are always NPC. And you can only spawn as a Tank once per round, and that's only if the director lets you, because Tanks are.. well, tanks.
I read that if you idle too long as a tank, you lose control of it and it becomes an NPC. It's an anti-camp measure, prevents the survivors from being instantly raped.
It's online, singeplayer and splitscreen.
(I haven't actually tried the splitscreen myself, but I can see the option on the screen)
Splitscreen works fine, you can take your friend online too which is a plus.

From what I gather, it's subject to limitations; you can only, for example, have one Tank at a time. I downloaded the demo just now and it is awesome. Fucking sweet.
Is there any benefit to getting the physical copy, other than it being physical?
Tempest

I believe you get to pick between Smoker and Hunter. A tank is randomly assigned, and if the tank is not constantly moving and attacking, they die. If you sit around as a tank, you are kicked out and it's given to someone else.

No, and the steam one will be a lot cheaper if the aus dollar goes back up. The prices are always in usd, but they don't change it, so when the dollar's decent games are basically half retail price.

I wish I still had my capture card, I would have some hilarious ones too. I was playing today with a few friends, and we decided to all find the tank, then make a run back to the safehouse. So it was in the room it's usually in, the empty one with all the pillars. We make an epic run all the back through a horde that appears, losing a man on the way. The two are a bit up ahead, and as I'm going up the last set of stairs I get raked by a few zombies. I quickly spin around and blow them away, but I'm in the red now as I limp toward the wrecked out room with the safe door above it. Once I'm up the rocks I'm down to like 20 health, but I am relieved as I get through the door where my friends are waiting for me. I turn around to close it, and hit X just as a fucking tongue wraps around me, pulling me back down toward the stairs as the door closes when I pass through it. The Smoker constricts me as the Tank comes lumbering around the corner and just facefucks me.

I just hate when you get stuck playing with overly strategic faggots that want to just hide in the bathroom for literally 20 minutes. On normal.
Oh and one of my favorite things to do is get to the last safehouse in the demo and kill everyone and close the door so that I'm the only survivor. I always try to explain to them that there wasn't enough food or something

Can't the tank rip off the safehouse door?
Yes. Yes he can. and I found that out the hard way. We were playing and one guy said, "If I see a Tank I am fucking running." and when the Tank appeared we got raped, and while we were getting owned he had gotten all the way to the beginning of the second part of the level. He closed the safehouse door and waited. A few seconds of him saying "Oh Shit" on his microphone the Tank finally appears, jumps up the rocks, tears down the door and beats down the guy. It was hilarious.
"the beginning of the second part of the level?" that's just the beginning of the the subway level, right?
I tried to run back to the safehouse with a friend everytime we saw a tank. We hid in the bathroom(To get the "Oh shit!" effect when would be able to hear it outside, and suddenly it rips the door open.). It never came, even though we were positive it had followed. The sounds of it died down, and we went outside and noticed it was dead.
We tried it twice. Same thing happened. How could you actually test if it could destroy that safehouse door?

EDIT: Ohmygodohmygodohmygod, playing as an infected is fucking AWESOME. You get to run around in ghost mode until you find a suitable place to spawn. Then you spawn, and it assigns you a special zombie class. I only played Hunter. I spawned myself below the survivors, climbed a pipe behind them, and snuck up on them. I didn't realize you have to crouch to attack as a hunter, so I ran into a group of them left-clicking like mad. When I finally figured it out, I pounced Zoey (who can blame me), and right at the same time a horde of zombies rushes and basically surrounded us so they couldn't save her.

Well, see what I did to test it out was at the beginning of the subway level, I binded "kill Louis; kill Zoey; kill Bill" to a key. (I always play as francis on single player.) Pressed the key and then spawned a tank right outside the safehouse door, actually I tried one, then 4 at a time. They don't seem to break down the door unless you remove the metal bar first. But once you do that it seems they can break it down on their first hit or it can take a few seconds. But he CAN break it down.
I also tried killing my team, then spawning a boomer to generate a mob. (Before I realized I can just use the console to spawn a mob.) and see if a certain amount of zombies can break through the safehouse door, but they don't seem to even try to attack it.
Anyone try using the 'noclip' cheat in the demo and go through the safehouse door at the end of the demo? You can explore the hospital or some strange building. There's also a minature city and a moon under the level that you can't seem to land on.
Sucks the demo is over. But I am definitely picking it up, and for the PC, too. I never get games for the PC if it's on a console. But, now that I've played the demo on the PC it just feels right to continue playing on it.

Wow, versus is awesome. Was really laggy, but being a boomer or hunter was hella fun. Playing through No Mercy campaign before, only got halfway through 3rd chapter! Very hard. Surprisingly, achievements are easy to get! Except the "complete campaign on expert" ones....
Finally got around to playing it for a good while, and holy crap it is awesome. Though I wish my teammates would stop making the car alarm go off and attracting the Witch (mainly the latter, the car alarm is tolerable at times)
Gotta say my most awesome moment is when all my teammates went into the first safe room, and I was like "Wtf" and then at least 30 zombies come rushing down the stairs and I take care of all of them with my FISTS. Now that's badass (though it was only normal or advanced). I didn't know you could open it from the outside, it was my first time through.

If you've got tier 2 weapons, a witch only takes a few seconds to kill if everyone concentrates their fire on her. I read somewhere that boss zombie HP does not increase with difficulty, only the damage they do. Could be wrong though.

It's the same map everrytime, but the AI "director" chooses where the zombies goes, when tanks come out, where the ammo is (and how much of it there is). Yeah, all you do is shoot zombies, but trust me, no play through is the same. Plans never stay in contact with the enemy. There are bits at the end of certain sections where you have time to prepare and certain tactics can be set up. No other game I've ever played required so much communication between players.
The only thing that intrigues me about this game is how fast the zombies are and the way they move, it is totally unlike any other game. Other than that the graphics look like poop and the gameplay looks like every other game made using the source engine.
Graphics aren't poop, it's just Source, and I reckon it's doing a damn fine job. I'd rather have a good game like L4D than a pretty looking POS. Also, this isn't CS zombie mod, and definitely isn't a nightmare version of TF2. The gameplay is different from those games, so I have no idea what you are on about.
My only complaint: Achievements. Some are WAY too easy, and when you get them they pop up in all capitals, looks ugly. Then again, some are really fucking hard.

Some that I thought would be hard ended up really easy, one being "kill a witch without her dealing damage to a survivor." I hit her with a molotov to pull her, so I ended up actually getting two achievements.
Has anyone gotten "Man Vs. Tank" or "Tankbusters"? Those are gonna be a bitch.
I find the best way to kill Tanks, atleast in the demo, would be to hit them with a molotov, and have the players go in for different directs, but still staying visual to eachother. When it goes after someone, they run, all the while everyone else fires. If that person goes down, you have a solid 3-5 seconds to open up whatever guns you have right into its head without retaliation to you. He focuses on the downed player.
I was playing the demo with a friend(Full game still not released in Europe for xbox), and we decided to see how far we could run from a witch. We killed both our NPC's so they wouldn't shoot her and distract her, and then my friend threw a molotov at her.
We ran for our lives immediately and we closed one door to slow her down. I turned around and saw the door being destroyed while a flaming witch came closer. I went, "Oh shit!, and turned around to keep running. I turned around again and saw this fireball like thing run towards me while screaming. Fucking scary.
We turned around a corner and stayed there for a while, when suddenly the witch screams stopped. We went outside and saw her lying dead a few meters away from us.
Fucking awesome.

Holy shit, playing as an infected is balls awesome. You have to plan and use teamwork even more than the survivors, but it's awesome if you pull off an ambush. In the finale of No Mercy, they were all making a run for the radio room but Francis was straggling behind. Being a Smoker, I reeled him in pretty quick - then my teammates (2 Hunters and a Boomer) gang raped the other three and cut them off. They barely survived that first attack - Francis' health was in the green when I took him, and I'm pretty sure he was on the brink of death by the time his teammates could get back to help him.
Anyway they were still in real bad shape. The rest of my team finished them off before I even respawned.
Then we switched up, and our whole team got into the helicopter alive.

I just rented the game. It is deffinatly not worth a buy. The game is way to linear. The campaigns are decent, short and no depth. The actual gameplay is fun, but there is no replay value, I don't care if zombies are in a different place, it still plays basically the same. The attention to detail that Valve is known for is nowhere to be found. The only highlight of this game is the online, and that is because it is awesome playing as a zombie. I don't know about the PC, but I felt extremely let down by Valve.

It's basically got the absolute minimum amount of story that a zombie shoot-em-up needs. I haven't encountered any griefers yet, but I hear lots of whining about them so you might run into one on NXE. And no, I don't think you can turn off friendly fire, but I haven't checked.
fisdunctional- that's too bad you're not enjoying it. I disagree with the point about replayability - I don't mind playing the same maps, linear though they may be. There's something addictive about it - spoke to a lot of people that put 10+ hours of gameplay into the demo, and that was before it was available to people who didn't preorder.
OH AND BY THE WAY: If anyone is expecting this to actually have a plot, like the Half-Life games or something, you're going to be disappointed. Left 4 Dead was intended to be a play on cheesy B-List zombie movies, and that was done flawlessly.

I heard there was some sort of reputation system in the works, has anyone else? Stuff like friendly fire gives you really bad rep, helping people (reviving them, giving them pills and such) gives you good rep.

Oh man, that rep thing is an awesome idea. I'm going to be a model citizen.
For the record, I've put in 15 hours of the real game and only doing versus. Haven't touched the campaign yet as I'm waiting for friends to do it on expert.

But.. how does it work, though? I see a little dialogue pop up when I save someone or heal someone, etc, but is there a permanent tally of my awards & demerits somewhere that people can see? The rep system seems useless otherwise.
Maybe it's not implemented yet.

It's being made unofficially so something might come up but this would be sick if it actually happens.

I think I read in an interview that they decided to NOT go with the rep system. They were messing around with it earlier, but then went with an in-game slap on the wrist approach instead.

Add me to the list of people who thinks this game is awesome. You folks were correct in saying that the demo was no longer available anywhere after the retail box shipped.
In the first 29 hours that I owned the game, I played for 22 of those hours. I honestly cannot remember the last time I did that with a game. There is DEFINITELY something addictive about this game.
For those of you that aren't too keen on it, make sure you've tried the Versus mode. Campaign wasn't too fun, but versus is amazing.

So, just joined a Versus match. It was the 2nd part of No Mercy, and we'd literally just left the safe room. We were at the escalators leading down to the ticket booth area.
Tank.
Luckily, the guy playing the tank sucked and we managed to get him caught in the escalators. We killed him without taking too much damage.

Yeah, for some reason tanks have been spawning earlier and earlier every match I play. On one my teammates were these complete fucking morons (I was survivor), and as soon as we left the safe house (literally), the tank spawned. We didn't hear it for a few minutes, and this one guy was yelling at us to hurry up, and when we didn't he was like "YOU FUCKING SPAWNED THE TANK, NEXT TIME HURRY UP."

Yeah, there's some douchebag players out there. A surprising amount of people don't realize this game is about teamwork. If you decide to rambo it and get pounced by a hunter halfway across the level, you're gonna die.
Even more-so for the infected. A smoker or hunter on their own is harmless to a group of survivors. A lot of people claim the smoker is underpowered, but they're just frustrated when they snag someone and another survivor immediately blows their head off.

I find myself playing campaign on expert with friends only, using versus as a good timekiller. I pretty much refuse to play with randoms, unless they're all actually using their mic's. But the game is amazing.
For such a simple design, it's incorporation of teamwork is crazy. Never thought something as simple as point and click would require as much tactics as this does.

My friends got bored with doing the same shite over and over, so they came up with the idea of splitting up and playing against each other; Last Man Standing kind of thing. But you could shoot each other and stuff. The last guy alive that made it to the safe room wins.
It was pretty fun, but you're pretty much fucked if you can't outrun the Tank or Witch.

Talking about Rambo players:
Last night I was having an awesome time with Versus (been having really close matches lately, and it makes me put on my game face something serious). On one of the servers we got to the No Mercy finale. We weren't going to win overall, but had stopped the other team from completing the finale, so it was a small victory. The chopper came, we covered each others ass, throwing molotovs to stop them following. Everything was good. Three people were on the chopper. I turn and see Bill standing there, waiting for the horde. Next thing I know he's surrounded and a Tank IS IN THE FUCKING CHOPPER owning my two team mates. I knew we were fucked, so I jumped out and started beating the zombies off. Then suddenly I'm hit for six to a level below the chopper. Great.
Good game.
That guy was such a douchebag after all our effort.

Haha, I've had that happen to my team. I think I'd already died in the finale so I got to watch - despite having a Tank passenger, the humans still triggered the victory cinematic when the last guy jumped on board. Everybody on the chopper was already incapacitated and getting the shit flattened out of them by the Tank, and they were all just screaming "GET ON GET ON GET ON" over their mics at the last guy. Pretty funny shit.
Oh, and when you're a Boomer, exploding on people is so much more fun than puking on them. In the second part of No Mercy, I waited until a survivor was looking out a window at the street below, and I just jumped off the building and blew up in his face on the way down. People get pretty pissed off at that, oddly.
I love the level where to survivors are waiting for the elevator. You can literally wait for them in the elevator untill it opens, I don't find it very successfull, but it's damn fun.
"All right guys! It's open, let's get in!"
*Everyone runs in the elevator still busy shooting zombies*
*Door closes*

Well, some might be disappointed in COD WaW, because it's quite similar to CoD 4. Although some consider it a new breeze after CoD 4. L4D might be a too big of a turn from other fps-s. But by all means, if he's open to change, L4D is great.

Kinda lame that they included the mounted gun and world explosives as "extra weapons". The TEN NEW WEAPONS ad at the end of the demo implied differently.
I don't really care about the small amount of weapons.
We got automatic(M4, Uzi), close-combat(2 Shotguns) and long range(Sniper), and the usual pistols. It's only in CoD 4 and stuff like that it's cool with alot of weapons.

That is true. I usually try to stay ahead of everyone else, though, when I have a shotgun. That usually keeps me from accidentally shooting Louis. I also try to tick the witch off, too, because the auto-shotgun can really do a number on the witch if you run backwards and just unload on her. Course, on expert that could be a different story.
Also, I love how the auto-shotgun can shoot insanely fast, and holds two more rounds than the regular shotgun. It also seems to be able to kill zombies a little bit farther, but that could just be me.

So fucking fuck fuck guys. Me and three other random people went to play through Dead Air on expert, for fun obviously, but our real goal was the achievements. The other 3 were all friends and I was the odd one out but it was fine and we worked well together. We got off to a real shitty start and kept screwing up like friendly fire and crap and people were on the verge of quitting several times before making it to Chapter 3. Anyway after all the frustration we got to Chapter 3, but one of our guys had to leave for a bit, saying he'd be back (he already had the achievement). We get to Chapter 5 with us 3 and the bot - Bill. Chapter 5 comes and after two failed tries the guy comes back in and gives us a great strategy, and after that the horde was nothing. However, once the Tank came he would wreck us through sheer luck every time, and sometimes we managed to get to the second Tank only to be picked off by a smoker or something and that would screw up the whole thing and we'd die. After about 5-6 tries, the same dude had to leave again for the night. So we knew we couldn't do it with a bot so I brought in one of my friends. Like 5 tries later and we made it to the second Tank all four alive. However, we had nothing to light it on fire with so we had to dance around it and just shoot at it. Well, I turned to run since he was gaining on me and I was taken down by a rock. He then walked over and crushed me, and then killed a second guy. Then the remaining two went to the plane, where my friend accidentally shot the other guy and incapacitated him. We thought all was lost, but after the tank killed the guy, and my friend emptied one more clip into it and brought it down. We cheered him on as he rushed to the back of the plane and fought off the approaching horde. He kept nervously looking back as the plane's platform slowly dropped lower and lower, and he finally jumped on and back up in the plane. We cheered, but then a fucking Hunter leaped on the plane. He fired frantically at it it but it darted around in the space, and landed right in front of him. Just as it did, the cut scene triggered and the plane took off. We were all elated and watched as the credits roll. 5 hours and 16 minutes it took, with us three there for the whole ride. Then, satisfaction turned to confusion as the loading screen appeared, but no achievement pop-up to accompany it. We got back to the lobby, and I checked just to make sure. Survive the Dead Air campaign. Survive one campaign on Expert. With the three of us dead, and our fourth hero only in for the last chapter, none of us had the achievement.
What the fuck.

That's fine and all, but with three Tanks that incap you in one punch, it's tough for all four people to stay alive to get to the plane. Everyone had an equal hand in getting to the end (if you're there for all 5), everyone should get it, not just the lucky one who hops on the plane.

The second tank and killed all of us, and you cannot respawn after you start the fuel tank. I'm 1/4 complaining about how I didn't get the achievement after much hard work and 3/4 complaining how it's next to impossible for all four people to survive three tanks and about 10 hordes, and if one guy goes down while the other three get in the plane, the 3 get the achieve when that one guy could've done most of the work up until the point where a flying rock took him down or something.

Versus maps are basically identical to the co-op versions, but there are a few subtle differences (the air conditioner you can jump on to entirely skip the apartments is not present in Versus. The radio building at the end of No Mercy is also slightly different, as the stairs behind it are exposed instead of protected by walls.

Is it true playing zombie mode is at severe disadvantage than Humans in versus?
Diomedes
12-02-2008, 1:18 PM
Depends Moon. In the regular game the zombies can only really win by:
- slowly chipping away at the players health
- the tank
- witch (rarely)
- hunter/smoker/mob all at once
When playing in versus it can be hard for the zombies because their strategies must rely on the NPC zombies to distract the players. I found the best strategy was to attack with a smoker and hunter during the tank attack. That way, two people are demobilized while the other two are contending with a tank that has only 2 targets. Both sides are tricky.

It really depends on the skill of the players.
4 zombies, lets say 2 hunters, a smoker, and a boomer, with a good coordinated attack can seperate the players and kill them without any NPC help at all. But you'd need to have extremely good players to do something like that.

Throw a boomer in there to get mobbed by zombies and that's a pretty tough combination.
You'd think it'd be easier in versus, because in a normal game you normally only get hit by one boss zombie at a time, but in versus you can coordinate a plan like you just said and attack all at once for a hard hitting blow.
I find the sites are equally balanced, but I haven't played much versus. It's pretty much impossible to only be 2 human players in verus(1 infected 1 survivor) because the survivor will have bots.
It's fun playing both, so I don't really care about balance.
Matterialize
12-02-2008, 3:43 PM
The bots are retarded in Expert versus though. Every second counts, and the best strategy for survivors is to pretty much just sprint to the end and see how far they get. Bots aren't intelligent enough to understand that, so they often dawdle at the back of the group to "cover the rear" or whatever.
Expert versus is so fun. I wish we could set difficulty filters when finding a quick match.
