Well I bought a new PS2 today simply for the enjoyment I will be able to have play DBZ BT 2/3 with my friends/brother. My question is, what other games are good that I can get? RE4 is definitely on the list, I never managed to finished it (the army dude in the ruins is as far as i got).
Oh, and I'm mostly interested in fighting games or RPG style, as purely FPS I find to suck on PS2. And racing/puzzle games suck in general (cept Burnout).

I didn't really like the over the shoulder view for RE4. Get GTA: San Andreas, if not the trilogy box set. So much replay value. God of War 1 and 2, and then Shadow of the Colossus.

If you want a game that will scare you shitless, I recommend Silent Hill 2. Some real creepy stuff right there.
Other games of interest:
Psychonauts
Metal Gear Solid (2 and/or 3)
Ookami
Devil May Cry series (Except 2)

Final Fantasy X is a good RPG game for PS2. My all-time favorites would have to be the Ratchet and Clank games, Project: Snowblind, Rock Band, and Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

Silent Hill movie rocked, so that sounds sweet, and God of War looked fun. I have another question: what do you guys think of the online capabilties of some games?

Shadow of the Collossus is a must have. I play it over and over again and never get bored. FFX is a great game but I reckon FFXII was better, I loved the battle system and it just felt more epic. Just whatever you do stay away from FFX-2. I think a bear shat on that game because it's one big pile of crap.

God of War Series
Jak Series
Ratchet and Clank Series
Sly Cooper Series
Those are some good ones.

Definately get Psychonauts. I downloaded it yesterday for the 360 and it is one of the most fun platformers out there. It helps that it is actually funny as well.

Get all the Ratchet n Clank games. All at once.
and people who play DBZ BT don't have friends, you liar.
There are so many awesome games for the PS2.
Just to name a few:
Ratchet and Clank 1-3, (Fuck 4, it sucks)
Jak and Daxter
Jak II (Get 3 if you want to finish the trilogy, but it really doesn't live up to the second one)(Also Jak X isn't that great)
Kingdom Hearts 1 + 2
Devil May Cry 1 + 3
Psychonauts
Sly Cooper 1 and 2 (Get 3 if you want because a lot of people loved it, I personally didn't like it compared to the other 2)
StarWars Battlefront 2 (only get #2 because it is 100x better than the first game)
God of War 1 + 2
Shadow of the Collosus (must get)
Any GTA game that fits your fancy
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3(MGS3: Substence, not MGS3: Snake Eater)
Guitar Hero (the first one, and if you don't have a 360 then get the 2nd one as well)
Also for backwards compatibility:
Crash Bandicoot 1,2,3, Crash Bash, Crash Team Racing
Spyro the Dragon 1,2,3
Megaman Legends 1 + 2
PS2 fucking rocks

Any of the Prince of Persia games are alright, although personally I liked the first one best.

I'm hurt :( It's true, I tell you!
Thanks for all the input, definitely a lot of choice! Though, Hawke, what is so good about the Hulk game......?
Um, it's not based off of a gay Hulk Movie, you get to play as the Hulk. I mean it's not a game essential to a PS2 collection but its a fun distraction.

The Hulk is like Grand Theft Auto for a monster. I just went around throwing people and starting fires.

Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is magnificent. Just running around destroying everything is fun as hell and like Hawke said, it's not based off a movie.

I would recommend Ultimate Spider Man, it's not only for the PS2, but it's alot of fun and really enjoyable. There are cool unlockable suits, and it has a fun story, and in some parts you can play as Venom. It's a sandbox game too, you can explore New York or just play the story.

This list is pretty solid. I just put the ones that are awesome in my eyes.
If you like games with a lot of story line, get Metal Gear Solid (It's the reason why I bought my playstation 3. So I could finish up the epic story of Solid Snake). It has the best story line of any game ever. Kingdom Hearts also compares to that.

I used to love my PS2, but after experiencing earning achievements on the 360, I can never go back. On the bright side, you can walk in your local game shop and get all the best titles for dirt cheap.
GTA
Timesplitters
God of War
Psychonauts
Jak and Daxter
Ratchet and Clank
Ico / Shadow of the Colossus
FFX and FFXII
But since they're cheap you don't have to be too picky.

Shadow of The Colossus is a must have, the God of War series is awesome, and KH1-2 is pretty fun, even if they never will make a third.
Another good little gem is ico.
The predecessor to SOTC, it is hard as hell.
If you want a game that will scare you shitless, I recommend Silent Hill 2. Some real creepy stuff right there.
I'd also recommend Silent Hill 3, and 4 for more shitless-scarefun.

Final Fantasy X is a good RPG game for PS2.
You deserve to die.
It copped a lot of criticism, but Soul Calibur 3 is a decent multiplayer fighter. I've also got a Street Fighter collection on PS2, and if you can get your hands on it, it's worth a trip back down memory lane.
If you get FFXII, it's good for many many hours of gameplay. Just don't take any note of the main hero being a bit wussy.

I'll pick up on this seeing as noone else has.
I had my PS2 connected to the internet for a while. It was good. Because you couldn't hack the games as such (Aimbots, for example) gameplay was a lot more refined. Players who were better would win, as opposed to who had the latest set of cheats.
However, Online play has now been ceased for the PS2.

Hawke's list.
I agree with all this, but I would add just two more games for backwards compatibility.
Tomba 1&2, both those games were great platformers, and really worth a look into if you haven't played them.

The chances of getting either of these gems for a good price is incredibly low. The only way I can think is somebody sold them to a charity shop which is now selling them for 50p or something stupid, and good luck finding that.
For RPGs check out Dragon Quest 8, Star Ocean 3, Shadow Hearts : Covenant ( never played the original so can't pass judgement ) and if graphics aren't an issue Atelier Iris. Another game that you can't miss out on is Canis Canem Edit/Bully.

Metal Gear Solid, and Grand Turismo 3. You could get a new music game. I loved Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Try the series out.

Seriously? That blows, I was hoping to play some Splinter Cell Online, it was like my favorite online game for a while. It doesn't go online for PS3 :(
On that note, get any of the Splinter Cells other then the 1st one. Pandora Tommorow was my personal favorite, though Chaos Theory was solid as well.

The best FPS on Ps2 is Nightfire.
As for fighting then the Dragonball Budokai games and Tekken, also Fight Night round 2 is pretty awesome.
I only play RPGs on handheld or PC so I can't help you there, but any final fantasy is sure to be awesome.

All I'd recommend is the GTA's and Tekken and if you like sports Fifa and Tiger Woods

Besides Guitar Hero, Grand Theft Auto, and Kingdom Hearts, another game that I recommend is We Love Katamari. Now, I may be the only one who recommends this, but it's a fucking sweet game, and the music is annoying, but catchy.

Mercenaries is fun. It's a shooter, but it has a lot of destructibility and things to do. I'd at least rent it.

Oooh, that's pretty much the only one worth keeping around.
I love the soundtrack on it by they way.

Shadow of the Colossus
Great adventure game beautiful,too.
Tekken 5
Just a fun fighting game that has decent graphics.
Soul Calibur
Same as above.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
Really fun game.
NCAA 07
Meh.

I would suggest:
Final Fantasy 7 - 9, even though they are for the PS1
Final Fantasy X, 11 is online and I wasn't too into 12
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, my main reason for still having a PS2
Medal Gear Solid 2, can't remember if I played 3
Ratchet & Clank, 2 or 3.
It's a third person shooter, but unlike most games in that genre it doesn't suck.
One of my favorite games of all time, and it has a lot of rpg elements in it too.

Zone of the Enders
Epic game where you fly around in a mech and beat the shit out of evil mechs. Had some weird storyline but it was pretty awesome.
Xenosaga
Futuristic/Sci-Fi RPG. One of the best on the PS2.
The Adventures of Cookie and Cream
If you have any siblings or friends you should definitely buy this game. The cooperation involved is insane. This game might be hard to find though. I'm pretty sure it was one of those games barely anyone bought but kicked ass so is really hard to find.
Twisted Metal Black
Get this game for the character plots alone. I played this game on God-Mode every time just so I could unlock the videos. They put out a newer version a few years after the original with online play and extra maps or modes or something so look for that one.
Manhunt
One of the great PS2 games purely for content. It's a little bit brawler and a little bit stealth but the plot is what sets it out. You can find it used for about $10.
I'd also recommend getting the Devil May Cry Trilogy Box Set. I got mine for about $30 tops and it includes all 3 DMC games (including the Special Edition of #3). And if you do want to get any of the Grand Theft Autos also look for the box set with GTA3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas. It should also be about $30 tops.
FFX-2 was quite a decent game actually, it's gameplay is actually better than FFX and everyone knows that non-linear > linear.
Unless you prefer otherwise that is, but truth is, if FFX-2 was a completely separate game, it wouldn't get nearly as much crap.

Most people disliked it because of the dresspheres and the fact that it played like some dress-up Barbie game. And completely reused enemies which, while making sense, was also a disappointment to fans looking for something new and refreshing.
Personally I liked it. I found the dresspheres would lend some new strategy to how battles were fought but they ultimately fell to the same classic RPG formula: healer, attacker, specialty class (whether it be mage, another attacker, a tanking class, whatever). It was also much easier than FFX and, after the amazing storyline within FFX, the FFX-2 storyline was mediocre at best. It was interesting for the major fan but not as great a game people are used to.

Every fucking TEKKEN and HALF-LIFE.
Half-life totally owns if you have played the original PC version and know our way around. Simple enjoyment. (After the lab in the first one explodes, if you get it of course, watch out for those crappy little chicken/crap/zombie things that jump out of fucking NOWHERE and kill you.)
Tekken is just cool. And it'll keep you playing for days.
I'm sorry, I know someone already told ya' to get Tekken. I'm just telling you again so you HAVE to buy the thing. ~Thanks.
