View Full Version : Children of Men
Did anybody see this movie when it came out? About a world where every female has become sterile? And anarchy is rampant.
Interesting, but I didn't really follow it and I was wondering if somebody could explain.

Huh, I rented this a week ago because it looked great. And it was! I enjoyed it very much.
What the situation is, possibly spoilers: Basically, all the women in the world are infertile for some reason and cannot bear children. Since humanity has maybe another 70 years left to exist, most of the world starts to fall apart, with Britain being one of the few places that manages to keep it together and maintain a civilized society. But for some inexplicable reason, a young refugee girl (who was a prostitute, I think) becomes pregnant. Clive Owen's character is charged with getting her safely through the country to contact the mysterious Human Project, who will help her raise her baby and through her discover a cure for infertility and, thus, saving humanity. At the same time, though, there is an uprising in England being carried out by the oppressed refugees living in the country, and Clive & the girl are caught up in the crossfire.
Ending spoiler:I thought the ending was shit. Yeah, they meet with the boat and presumably meet up with the Human Project, who we are lead to believe discovers the cure for infertility with the girl's help. But it was just so abrupt. They get out of the sewers and into open water, then he dies and it just ends. I would've liked to learn a bit more about the Human Project, and why all women became infertile / how they cured it. For those of you wondering if they actually did cure infertility, you can hear children laughing and playing as the credits begin to roll, hinting that people are able to give birth again. Still, apart from the lame ending, the overall movie was fantastic and Clive Owen gave a great performance.
My favourite part was probably when the protagonists walk out of the building near the end, and the shock of hearing a crying baby briefly stops the entire battle. All the military troops and guerrilla refugees just cease fire and make a column for Clive, the girl and her daughter to pass through.

I don't think I've ever been so touched by a baby's cry before, that part was brilliant. I don't exactly agree with you on the ending, though. I like the mysteriousness of it, and I think the ending implies enough eveidence that everything is ok.
Wow. How do you not follow it?
I thought it was great. The ending scenes with the army and shit were awesome because there no cuts, just one long continous scene. It was an awesome portrayal of a fucked up future, and it was also pretty funny, especially Micheal Caine's character. I actually had no problem with the ending, I thought it worked perfectly.

I didn't realize it at the time, but thinking about it afterwards that totally blew me away. Gotta be the longest scene I've ever seen in a movie.

I think I've seen it about 6 times since I first saw it when it came out and was completely amazed. The length of shots and amazing camera-work and technical choreography is nothing short of fascinating.
The acting is top notch, the action is incredibly realistic and the CGI flows seamlessly.
The film is definitely one of the best I have seen in a long time.
Fantastic movie, however, I will have to agree with Matterialize and say that the ending was abrupt and did kind of detract from the whole experience.
In my opinion, 8.5 out of 10

Pffffft, guys, you all want your endings wrapped up with a neat bow so you don't have to think about. No Country for Old Men anyone? And that won Oscars. Stop using the ending as point of imperfection.
Yes awesome movie, confused the first time cause wasnt paying attention. But very cool and bleak.

I dig the shit out of it. It reminded me of Anthony Burgess' (A Clockwork Orange) novel The Wanting Seed, in a lot of ways.
I thought it was genius. It was fascinating. And I dig me some abrupt endings. I love 'em if they're done right, and this one was done perfectly.

The greatest thing about this film is the action shots. They are shot as one continuous sequence with no cuts, so the entire scenes are extended shots which have to be carried out perfectly. It was revolutionary film-making in that sense, and a superb film all round. The sense of quasi-dystopia was both brilliant and chilling.

I love Michael Caine's character, he's basically John Lennon but an old version of him. Nothing really ticked me off about the movie, I really actually loved the long one take scenes. I don't really understand why people hate this movie.

What the fuck are you even talking about?
I thought this movie was brilliant. It was science fiction as it's intended: ground in reality. Clive Owen did a great job, and the suspense was pulled off perfectly. Not to mention the one-take warzone. That scene kicked my ass.
I followed the movie, but I honestly hated it. I didn't care about the characters and I thought the plot was too vague to be interesting. I think more history and more ending would have gone a long way into making this movie better.

If the plot was anymore detailed then it would have way too many consistency problems. I like the idea of not knowing why or how sterility happened and how you saw only glimpses of outside society.
The main character was awesome. He was getting bored of his life in the office and this just jumped right into his lap. His father was also the man and I think most of you may know why.

It wasn't his father, Michael Caine's character was just a friend of his. It's still a shame that he dies though, but hey atleast he took his catatonic wife and dog, I don't mean it in a fucked up way, He was just ready to die

Exactly. I saw the movie for a second time and someone pointed out how it was continuous and I almost shit myself. And to top things off, it wasn't as if it was an easy scene to do.
On another note, I thought Micheal Caine's performance in this movie was absolutely superb.

I thought there was some sort of relation, maybe on his ex wife's side.

Yeah, this movie was pretty sweet. I love how most of the movie is almost filmed from a first-person point of view, like the cameraman is actually an unnamed, never-talking character that's along with them for the entire ride.
I love the scene where they walk through the battle too; great work.

Thanks for pointing that out. I only saw it once and I'm downloading it now to see it again.

I think I might watch the movie again from that "gordan freeman" perspective and see if it hits that way. I really didn't like it first time through though.

Favorite scene in the game would be When Clive Owen's character is getting the car out of the farm area, it was just so quiet and just heart pumping. I was kind of screaming RUN! RUN FUCK RUN TURN THAT FUCKING CAR ON!!!! I was just yelling for them to get away, no other movie has made me do such a thing(that I know of)
The scene where Julianne Moore is shot by the dude on the motorcycle was so realistic and quick. Thats how all of the action hit me. It was almost perfect. This was one of my favorite movies of the last few years.
As has been said, the ending was fine. I don't need everything to be explained to me in the end. You should know whats going to happen just by following the story itself.

There were great commentaries and making of sections for this movie, very interesting ideas behind how it was shot. Also, I like the mount they built for the interior car shots.

This movie just shows how awesome Alfonso Cuaron is.
He boosted the 'Harry Potter' Franchise with the third movie (the best one in my opinion), made a very excellent roadmovie ('y tu mama tambien) and this is one of the best Sci-Fi films I've seen.
The action scenes were raw, as they should be. Michael Caine was really awesome as the aging Hippie and yeah, Clive Owen rocks!
Just shows that the new talent in the movie world is coming from Mexico (Cuaron, Guillermo Del Toro and Fernando Mereilles. Robert Rodriguez allready made a name of himself, he rules!)

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the book! My mum was a big crime novel fan so we've got nearly every P.D. James book ever written. I know at this point it's almost cliché, but the film just doesn't stand up to the book. If you liked the film, read the book, don't worry though, the ending isn't spoilt if you've watched the film.
