I have been thinking since i got my itouch, that it would be very nice to have an application, especially now that 2.0 has come out, that would give the itouch users, not only the comic of the day, but also able to browse through the archive of comics, on their itouch. It would not only be more convenient than scrolling through, and trying to read it on safari, and i think would be almost an instant hit, considering the popularity of the web comic. What would really catch me, and alot of others, would be making this available for free or at least very cheap in the iTunes App Store. I hope i am not the only person who has thought of this idea and i wish that the creators, or whoever would be in charge of these kinds of things, would sincerely consider this requests from one of their great fans, even though i am new to the forum. Please post here if you think this could be a good idea, or if you would like to make any suggestions to help make this application not only more possible, but also to make it available for those who have been wanting and waiting for it. Thank you.

You kinda already can, save a shortcut of explosm.net to your main page. You get a cook C&H head as the app icon. Obviously not exactly what you mentioned (which I support by the way), but in the meantime it's a nice short term solution. (Plus it looks cool to have on your iTouch)

The good thing about having an app though is that everything will have been made to fit the screen, with most websites in Safari (those that don't have iPhone or iPod touch friendly versions) it means the slight inconvenience of having to zoom in every time you load a new page. It also depends on whether they want to spend the money buying the SDK in order to make the app in the first place.

Also, it's an 'iPod touch'; an 'iTouch' was a keyboard made by Logitech.

I doubt it would be complicated to program. All it would have to do is pull the comic off of explosm, much the same way that the C&H facebook app does.

Also like the C&H facebook app, it would mean that people could view comics without viewing ads, which means they wouldn't make any money. Bad idea and I can tell you right off the bat that nobody affiliated with Explosm will do it.

There's a C&H app for Bebo. Just thought I'd let you know.

Then why does explosm let you hotlink their comics?

Let's bring to attention the big line between in-phone browsing, and comic hotlinking and the bebo/facebook/etc apps. Hotlinking or the profile site apps let you link to one comic, and only one comic. If someone wants to see any other comics they'll have to come to our site, and they'll see the ads.

On the other hand, iPhone browsing will let people browse through the comics freely, without seeing as many ads (you could show maybe one tiny line-of-text ad below the comic?). Like Matt says, Explosm could lose revenue.

well then either design an app that includes some ads, or maybe create a smaller version of the explosm site (just the C&H portion) so it will fit better on the itouch screen.

Sounds like he means business.

It's a dumb idea. I'm sure both of the users who would use this thing would love it, but it's just too much effort for the mods to make this thing just so you don't have to press the zoom button.

Probably an easier way to do it would to have an alternate stylesheet that only loads when you're on an itouch, but I don't know if the site supports that.

Matt, you do know that you are allowed to put ads into the app? The NYTimes app has ads that take up the bottom part of the screen.

I think if done right, this could be perfect.

Also, why the fuck are you calling it an iTouch? Thats like callin a fuckin iPod Nano an iNano, or iPod Shuffle an iShuffle, or iPod Classic an iClassic. The fuck?

Um, everyone calls it the iTouch. Get with the program old man.

Um, everyone calls it the iTouch. Get with the program old man.

Actually most people find it annoying, it is an iPod, not an entirely different product line. Just call it a 'touch' (like how seem people just call it a 'nano'), the prefix is so unnecessary, especially when, as said, people don't call them 'iNano's and 'iClassic's.

It would be a very simple application to make. Its basically just image files, with a few linking buttons. If explosm gives up the copyright, this would be no problem.

Because iNano sounds stupid but iTouch sounds less stupid.

Then why does explosm let you hotlink their comics?

Because to hotlink a comic, the person still has to visit the website, and nobody gets their daily Cyanide and Happiness by checking out random comic hotlinks on Myspace pages. It's just an effective way of advertisement for C&H.

However, an app that gives the person the daily comic without having to visit the site is entirely different, because it would cause a marked decrease in visits to the website, and thus less profit for Explosm.

On the site right now, I can see a row of Google ads and two banner ads. On the other hand, on a screen more or less the size of your palm, BESIDE a comic that already has to take up just about all of the screen to remain readable, what can we hope to fit? Maybe a few words? One link to one place?

Less ads, less revenue, etc. Just come to the site like you already do; surely reading Explosm isn't so urgent it can't wait until you get home.

I do not know why iPhone/iTouch users have so much trouble viewing the site. I look at Explosm comics on my Blackberry using wifi and I have no problem.

I do not think that we really need an iPhone/iTouch app when you can just view Explosm using the internet on your phone.

My PSP also works fine for viewing the forum through wifi. I would say that you should just get something else with a better web browser if you want to view Explosm with a mobile device.

Still sounds stupid regardless.

And the money lost through ad revenue can be made back up by a fee you have to pay to get the app from iTunes...

As for problems viewing the forum/comics on the iPod; the forum shows up fine for me, and for the most part so do the comics, just aside from the slight misplacement of the boxes with the codes:

That's what the page on my PSP looks like if I try to make it fit on screen, is there an option to display web pages normally?

I can turn my iPod onto the side (so it's horizontal) and the accelerometer allows the page to be adjusted so I can view websites that way also; everything looks fine when I have it that way. Unfortunately the PSP doesn't have anything like that, does it?

Not really unfortunate, but no there is nothing like that on the PSP that I am aware of.

Yeah, iTouch is pretty logical, because it's hardly an iPod at all. I'm actually using it more for mail/maps/games/safari/apps, than the iPod.
And it would be nice to have a C&H app, which would somehow format the comics for the screen, and give easy links to forums/shop and stuff like that.

Ivan

But technically it is still an iPod, hence why it has the traditional iPod chrome backing with...oh, what's that? iPod engraved on the back, you say?

;)

I actually just downloaded the iPhone SDK so I could probably make one...but getting the clearance from whomever (copyright, etc) is a totally different thing...

No iTouch is not logical, it has a touch screen, it isn't a touch screen. It is an iPod WITH a touch screen. Why call it an iPod, iRotationWheel. I don't use my iPod classic for music anymore, I just back up some file on it. iExternalHD. The point is its not a fuckin iTouch, and don't call me old man I'm 15.

On Topic: This app could work if an ad was at the top of the page, and at the bottom with the comic in the middle. Requiring internet access to view.
