Just wondering if there was a free alternative or similar application to Corel Painter? I've played around with the Painter X trial version and I didn't really get enough time to get enough skill with it. I thought maybe there was a program that allowed all the basic features of Painter. I don't mean programs like GIMP or Paint.NET. I want one which simulates a 'real' paint feeling.

Better yet, are there any free brushes or add-ons for Photoshop CS2 which would allow something similar?

ArtRage 2 (http://www.ambientdesign.com/) is pretty great. Only the starter edition is free, but you do get a lot of features for normal painting. It's great for beginning and it does do well with simulating painting. I took a screenshot, for you: link (http://i37.tinypic.com/10r8zg0.jpg).

EDIT: I forgot to mention this. You see all the little menus on there? Well in order to keep them out of your way when you're actually painting, they disappear when you move your mouse over them while you're painting/drawing/whatever. They come back when you stop holding down the mouse.
