Well, in the near future I am going to need a new computer. I will be going off to college and I don't think my parents want me running off with theirs.

I am wondering if building my own computer would be much cheaper, if getting the parts is a large hassle, and if there is much risk involved (if I do something that isn't obviously stupid, will it break a $300 piece?).

Also, is building your own very difficult? I haven't had experience trying to build me own.

Building a computer yourself will be much cheaper. When you buy brand name ones you are basically paying for the name and software installed.

Getting parts is extremely easy. You can order them online from sites like Amazon, NewEgg, or TigerDirect.

As for ease, it is fairly easy. Most parts come with instructions on how to install them and there are many guides online as well. There is some risk, but it is no more than repairing your computer. I would not worry about risk.

Thanks, any idea of how much an average computer would cost to build? Parts, shipping, etc?

What kind of parts, and computer? That's all it depends on. If you need help picking out parts, I'd love to help.

Thanks, but I am not looking to do this right away. I am just looking at stuff, trying to see if it's a good idea, what to look for/stay away from, stuff like that. If and when I do look to get the stuff, I will gladly take some help.

Well it also depends on what you are using the computer for. Are you looking for something that runs the basic programs for uni like word prcessing, or do you want a gaming rig too?

Well, like, what will you be using it for? If you're using it just for like MC word, then you won't need a whole lot.

I will want it for schoolwork as well as gaming.

You can probably build a decent computer that will handle schoolwork and gaming for around $500-$600. Mind you that is an estimate, but that should be good for a mid range gaming rig and general computer.

Thanks, that is easily a few hundred bucks lower than any decent pre-built computer, so I think I'll go for that when I get some spare cash.
