Backwards compatible my ass.
So recently I wanted to play half life 2 again. I didn't feel like hooking up my old xbox, so I just popped it into my 360. The game took longer to load, the control was absolutely terrible, and the graphics seemed slowed down, and didn't want to move immediately with my camera (this is hard to explain, but for a split second things would stay where they were, but also be in a new spot on the screen relative to my angle, as if they were unwillingly being dragged along).
I don't remember how the game handled on my old xbox, but on the 360, when I tried to move, I would move a little bit, still have momentum, and continue to slide a little ways, like I was on ice. when I was in the menus, like the main screen and the pause menu, it seemed to have trouble registering what I was doing. Like when I move the analog stick down, it would try and go right, or wouldn't move at all. The same thing happened with the d-pad. I had to be a foot away from my 360 to get it to work.
Also, to compensate for how slow everything was, I turned up my sensitivity, and everything lagged when I tried to look somewhere else.
How can something be next gen when it can't even play the games from it's last fucking system?
Is there a way to fix this, or is the whole "backwards compatibility" thing just a bunch of bullshit?

I heard that the contract with the supplier of the some chips for the first Xbox ran out and they tried to shaft Microsoft on a renewal price. No idea how much truth there is in it. Maybe they purposely slowed down Half-Life2 so that you've got to go buy a copy of The Orange Box?

Um, theres a reason its called "Next-Gen". Its so it can play games from THIS generation, not LAST generation. Nobody really buys consoles to play old games. That's why they recently took PS2 emulation out of the PS3.

What? They just released a 80GB Ps3 that can play PS2 games. I never owned a PS2 and am greatful that my Ps3 can play older games.
On the contrary I'm competely bored with the current generation titles, the only thing that I've picked out of my collection to play recently is GH3, which can hold my attention span. I find myself wandering around game stores looking at all the new releases unable to feel any excitment what so ever.
Yesterday I brought a host of Ps1 and Ps2 games, and they kept me entertained for hours, yet if I was to have brought something released more recently I would have probably have completed the game in that time. Give me Tomb Raider and Silent Hill over your Gears of Wars and Grand Theft Autos any day.
Yesterday I started Abe's Odysee again because it makes me laugh so much.

Only some of the original xbox games are backwards compatible on the xbox 360. There was something about the software engine being completely different in the 360 that makes it nor work with original xbox games.
What you may want to try is to reinstall the software on the 360 hard drive for backwards compatibility. Half Life 2 is on the compatibility list, so you should be able to get it working. Make sure you are connected to xbox live while you are playing as well because sometimes the 360 can download the backwards compatibility files while you are trying to play.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.
EDIT: It just fixed the lag, the game still plays really clunky and bad. the dragging thing with the graphics still happens if I turn my sensitivity.

Backwards compatibility is not perfect with the 360. That may be the best performance you will get. I have heard that other people have had the same problems you are having while playing xbox games on the 360 (No one I know of has tried Half Life 2 though).
You may want to contact Microsoft about it. Maybe they can offer a better solution, but I hate to say you may be screwed.

The first PS3s (NTSC 60gb/20gb) had full hardware PS2 emulation
The second PS3s (PAL 60gb, NTSC and PAL 80gb) rely on partial software emulation.
The new PS3s (All 40gb, new 80gbs, future 160gb) have no emulation at all.

You said that there is no reason to play last-gen games on next-gen consoles. Backwards compatibility has existed in every next gen system, so obviously it's wanted.
And to your other point, shut the fuck up, no one cares.

Wow chill dude. Game companies aren't really trying to market their old games. They're trying to market new games. Otherwise they wouldn't make new games in the first place.

Yeah I hate to break it to you but the PS3's backwards compatibility is even worse than the Xbox 360's now. Also, if there was no Half-Life 2 emulation on the 360, it just plain wouldn't load. If it's sluggish and shitty performance it's your 360 or your disc, not Microsoft's backwards compatibility.

Actually, Tempest, the Ps3 Backwards Compatibility has recently improved greatly, although the official Backwards compatibilty list is very incomplete and not alot of help at all. This website is really useful for PS3 B/C (http://www.ps3comp.com)
Personally, I use my Ps3 more for b/c than I do my 360. Granted I use my Ps3 for Ps2 games than Ps3 games =/

You could just get The Orange Box. 5 great games in one, three of them HL2 related. Why settle for an inferior port? Without Portal love?
And if Microsoft doesn't support BC then why do they have Xbox Originals on XBLM?

Just buy The Orange Box. It's pretty cheap now, and Portal is awesome. It's probably the best deal of any newer games released in the last year. Even Halo 3 is still $60.

I'd buy TOB as well. I mean, you get 5 games in one, and Half Life 2 would be optimized for the 360, too. It'd also get you good and ready for Episode 3 and Mirror's Edge.

I would say that has a lot to do with the fact that the systems play completely different games and it's a matter of preference. :ahe:

You actually want to play past Xbox games other than Halo? That's a first!
Also HL2 is also on the 360 but in a much better package.

That's true for HL2, but not for most of my other games I want to play for the original xbox. I shouldn't have to re-buy games so I can play them again. I'm probably going to end up getting the orange box, but that was always on my list, so you guys aren't saying anything groundbreaking or helpful.

Nobody is saying anything groundbreaking or helpful because there is really nothing to say, backwards compatibility doesn't really work with the 360. Don't be a prick.
