View Full Version : Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, or Slayer?

Which is your favorite thrash metal icon and why?
For me it's Metallica. James has a crushing voice, the guitar solos mix very well with the rhythm guitar and drum beats, and every bass player they have had (with exception to Bob Rock) has been more than amazing.
Now your turn.

Slayer, if it's a choice between the three?

There was a little band called Anthrax too..
Regardless, Slayer kicked, and still kicks, all of their asses.

Megadeth. At least they're still thrash. Of course I liked Metallica's thrash stuff, but overall Megadeth have kept it a lot more consistent. Never been a big Slayer fan, much because of Tom Araya's vocals.

Anthrax, yay!
Whom I actually prefer over both Megadeth and Metallica.

It's a toss up between Megadeath and Metallica; I never got into Slayer so much.

Don't get me wrong. I love all three of them. But Metallica takes the cake for me.

I don't think Metallica would properly be described as "Thrash Metal" when it comes to their whole regimen. I'd say Anthrax. They're consistently heavy.

Add Anthrax into the first post you fucking idiot. It's called the BIG FOUR OF THRASH for a reason! And my vote would probably go to Slayer.

Metallica
Megadeth's work all sounds the same, and I'm not a huge fan of Slayer.

Metallica's early works are unbelievable but they lose major points for Load and Reload. Megadeth have more memorable songs to me and Dave's voice is awesome. Slayer is decent enough, and I support the message they give, but the vocals kill it for me in some places.
So Megadeth it is.

Metallica isn't Trash metal. Pantera is, it should be on the list.

If Pantera should be on the list, it will be on the very bottom of my list. :barf:

Friedman > Hammett/Hetfield > King.
Therefore, my vote goes to Megadeth.

I hope this is either a horrible attempt at a play on words, or you meant "thrash" and you were also actually joking. :indiff:

I'm gonna have to go with Megadeth on this one. Why?
Metallica's best album was Ride The Lightning
Slayer's best album was Reign In Blood
Megadeth's best album was Rust In Peace
And by far, Rust In Peace is the much superior album of all three.
Metallica when Mustaine was in it.

Metallica.
I like alot of stuff about slayer minus King's solos but that's enough for me to get annoyed of a couple of their songs, especially Raining Blood and Bloodline. Megadeth is also good but I never really listened to them alot.

Years ago it would have been a toss up for me between Metallica and Megadeth.
But Slayer has proven to stay true to themselves more than either, so they win IMO.

I've never really been a Slayer fan (nothing against them, though) and Megadeth are just a poor man's Metallica.
Metallica have written some ridiculously killer tunes. Their first 4 albums were masterpieces. Megadeth, on the other hand, haven't really written anything exceptional and they only ever existed so that Mustane could try and get back at Metallica.

Metallica, as I'm not a big Slayer fan and to be honest haven't heard much Megadeath. And yes Soul, they have written some killer tunes :)

Metallica. It's a close tie between them and Slayer for me, but Megadeth has never been an option because I could just never get over how much of a pussy Dave Mustaine is.
EDIT: This is not to say they haven't written good songs. His pussyness just killed it for me.

Shut up man. I'M not big on Anthrax, so it didn't go in MY post. If you have such a big problem with it, make your own damn post, don't whine about it here. I don't think anybody is interested in hearing you whine.

I'm interested in hearing him whine, because it's a good point. Those are the 4 main bands that would lead to comparison, so I don't understand why you'd exclude Anthrax.
With that said, I'd have to sya Metallica. I have a couple of Megadeth CDs and I just can't get into them. None of the songs are catchy enough to stick with me, unlike Metallica songs. And I haven't really heard much Slayer at all.

No I think he has a point. Anthrax was pretty influential to thrash. Also, he cannot really post about it "hear" because that is a verb. Grammar wins again!

Fuck I did mess up using the wrong "here". Thank you for pointing that out.
At least you and the other guy explained in a sophisticated manner as to why I should have included Anthrax. That guy was just being a dick about it.

Wikipedia:
. The so-called "Big Four" of thrash metal are Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, who simultaneously created and popularized the genre in the early 1980s.
:indiff: I wasn't whining, I was simply pointing out that Anthrax should have been included, and most people in this thread agree with me, so grow a pair and get over it.

You just came off as a royal dickhead from get-go. I'm very aware of the four 'thrash icons'. But I don't like anthrax, so I didn't put it in my post. YOU grow a pair and get over the fact that I didn't put Anthrax in here. Jesus Christ. What's the big deal?

Seriously dude, get over it. He was pointing out that Anthrax is as pivotal as the other three bands. And when it's a public forum, you really shouldn't not include a band just because of your bias, you should try and be fair to the genre.
Andy's added it in now, so no harm done, and stop whining.

I guess this is where we differ in opinions. I would go with Megadeth (or even Anthrax) from the list, Mustaine coauthored some of Metallica's best tunes (Jump in the Fire, Metal Militia, The Four Horsemen, Call of Ktulu, Ride The Lightning) and composed the solos that made people think HOLY SHIT HAMMET IS GOD! So calling Megadeth "Metallica's poor man" is very unfair and inaccurate. Holy Wars...The Punishment Due is greater than any Metallica track, in my opinion.
Also, I never agreed with the "big four of thrash" thing, I just can't see myself placing Slayer above Exodus, Kreator, Sodom, or Celtic Frost. (for example that is, I have nothing against Slayer)

Yeah, but Mustaine is a big sook who only created Megadeth in an attempt to "win" and thus soothe his ego. Considering Megadeth pretty much suck, he lost.

Regardless of Mustane's reasons to create Megadeth, and despite the fact that he's a drunk arrogant son of a bitch, Megadeth are fucking tight. I wouldn't say they suck, no not all.
I try to use the "veil of ignorance" when I listen to music, block out whatever information I have that might bias me towards a certain opinion (though it doesn't always workout that way) but hey each to his own.

Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, or Megadeth? HA! Fuck that!
Testament, Sodom, Municipal Waste, and Sepultura (circa Bestial Devestation, Schizophrenia) are my top 4! The "big 4" are really not that good. Then again, I have a rather negative view of thrash for the most part.

They're not my top 4 thrash bands either but that's not what this is about
Metallica(Not counting load/reload/st anger)
Anthrax
Megadeth(They are good in small doses)
Slayer(Just can't get into them)

Give me a believable, rational and well-thought out reason for why you've posted this.
It's like saying, 1 + 1 = 3.
It's just not possible.
(And yeah, I'm going with Slayer. Kerry King rips Dave Mustaine to shreds. No pun intended.)

Haha thats so true, when we saw them live during Sweating Bullets people were throwing shit on the stage and a shoe hit him so he stops everything and says: "I already have my own fucking shoes, if one more thing gets thrown at me I'm walking out." So someone threw a water bottle on stage. He walked off then after a few minutes came back and finished the song.

I'll have to go along with Megadeth, mainly because two, three years ago I was more into trash than I am now. I listened to Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth, etc.
I never really got into Slayer, Metallica is/was great 'till I heard St. Anger that sucked balls blue.
Megadeth is the only one of the three to which I can still listen without getting aroused in the homosexual manner.
Plus; I went to see Megadeth in Amsterdam three years ago and they were fucking awesome.
Antrax, don't know 'm.
