View Full Version : Interested in buying a Bass

I read the other thread in the forum by Tempest about buying a Bass Guitar, but I don't think that really applies to me, as I'm only interested in getting an Explorer. I've got an Epiphone (Les Paul), and always been a fan of them, because they're good quality guitars, but I've recently heard that they're not 'all that' in the Bass department. I've seen a Dean Explorer on eBay recently, but I've never played a Dean, so I don't know what the quality is like (and the V-Shape headstock puts me off). Theres a music trade show coming up next month and I'm expecting to pick me a Bass up there.

What would be better? An Epiphone or Dean Explorer, or are there any alternatives?

A good alternative is Mexican Fender. I have a Mexi Fender P-Bass that's made out of two solid pieces of wood. Most other guitars in this price range are just scraps from other guitars glued together. I'm pretty sure Explorers have active pickups, which is a pure taste thing. I don't like them because I feel your real tone doesn't come out, only what the battery says. But some people like that sound. I've played those Epiphone Les Pauls; they're pretty nice. But if you're looking for a solid affordable bass I'd go Fender. But if you're looking into Explorers, you probably want something with an interesting look. Ibanez has gotten surprisingly better at making instruments over the last ten years, and they have some really killer designs.

Up until this point, I thought you actually hadn't read his post at all. Then I saw you acknowledged he wanted an Explorer. But then you went the complete other direction again.
HE WANTS AN EXPLORER, AND IS LOOKING FOR WHAT BRAND OF EXPLORER WOULD BE BEST. EXPLORER ONLY.

Personally, Hicka, I'd go Epi. They've got the classic look, and they're the ones that started Explorer, and have the most experience with Explorers, so I'd go for the expert knowledge factor.

Do Gibson not make Epi's for bass? Like, under the Gibson name.

Yes, they do, I never really considered a Gibson because I've always thought of it as being too good for me, if you know what I mean? I'll never be good enough to get the most out of a Gibson, so why should I spend the extra money on one if an Epiphone will suit me just fine?
If I find one at the right price though, I'd surely go for it. Infact, the Epiphones I've looked at cost considerably less what I expected, so maybe I could stretch the fund a little more

Funny you mention wanting an Explorer bass. I just picked up an 89 Epiphone Explorer in a limited edition cream. This bass certainly is "all that." I paid $450 US for it which was a steal considering how hard they are to find in any color other than black and that I got the original hard-shell case. If I were you I'd go explorer first, and then if you really like it go for a Gibson later.

Oh shit, you got it? That's mad. Get on MSN so I can pick your brain please.

Also, Hicka, how much more expensive are the Gibsons? Coz the way I see it, pay a little extra now, and you won't need to upgrade later, y'know?

That is a sweet explorer. I am not into that style really. My next bass will be a 5 string Ernie Ball music man HH. But that is a sweet one.

Oh, you win. When he asked for alternatives I didn't know he meant other explorers.

Thanks for all the advice. Its an Epiphone, I just cut the headstock off in the photo.
Picked it up off eBay for £158.26 / $272.36(USD) with a swanky hard case. Absolutely top notch condition.

We should start a club Hicka. Except my Explorer is way hotter so I get to be president.
