They're not emo though. They're post-hardcore. Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, Hot Water Music and At The Drive-In are actually emo bands, and they're all good. "Emo" isn't a bad thing unless you're talking about the shitty mascara, hairspray and self-harming scene that evolved from it... which none of the bands I mentioned, including Funeral For a Friend are a part of.

For the record, the Funeral for a Friend conversation was me saying that I liked their old hardcore stuff, but the latest album (Tales Dont Tell Themselves) wasn't as bad as people made out and I quite enjoyed a few of the tracks on it. That and I love self-harming whilst listening to My Chemical Romance.

some early Neurosis could count as post-hardcore, there's a specific sub-genre to that, i'm not sure wether ffaf fits in it, never actually gave it a listen
but there's some post-hardcore that i like, specially if it slides into sludge (some say sludge is an evolution from post-hardcore, as it merges with doom metal and post-rock)
