Who's your favorite band from the 80s?
I love Duran Duran! I think they're the best 80's band. Their music was creative and innovative. I've been a fan ever since I was little. Did you guys know they're releasing a DVD from Eagle Rock Entertainment's classic series? The DVD will focus on the "Rio" album. It comes out Nov 4th. Here's a clip I found on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nA7cAT5Qbw
I can't wait to add this to my Duran Duran collection

I like Metallica. They're considered an 80's band, right? I think they're the best 80's band. Unlike so many of their peers during the 1980's, Metallica's music could be played today and would get equal or greater praise. If not only to appease people who hate modern Metallica. Some sort of paradox ensues.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, no doubt about it. Way back when Flea was slapping faster than anything known to man and when Hillel Slovak was still shredding for their amazing funk-punk sound. It's actually ridiculous how much they've changed since their first album.

Original Red Hot Chili Peppers. They had the absolutely perfect combination of funk, punk, and rock. Their first three albums are incredible, they make you want to dance yet tear shit up and jump all over the place. Their live performances of the era were mindblowing, overflowing with energy and funk. But then Hillel Slovak died, and they sold out with Frusciante and Warner. I like their new stuff, but I prefer the 80's songs a thousand times more.
Hats of!

Big Audio Dynamite.
Or, the Beastie Boys.
That depends where in the 80's you want to go.
Hair Metal/Hair Metal: Motley Crue/Poison
Heavy Metal: Metallica
Pop: I don't listen to pop but I am sure there is one out there.

Hey, don't be dissin' Journey. I would have to say it would go to Dream Theater for me. If you don't really consider them an 80's band then I would go with Metallica.

Bad Brains and Cro-Mags are the best 80's bands.
Idioteque

Probably Black Flag, Sonic Youth and maybe The Cure.
EDIT: Hah, I just noticed Prof's avatar.
AC/DC. Although they started in the 70's they made some pretty badass material with Brian Johnson.

I'm gonna go with the 80's edition of U2. Back before Bono turned all self-righteous and started trying to be Jesus. The Joshua Tree is quite possibly one of the best albums ever made, and The Unforgettable Fire, War, and October were pretty damn good too.

Second place, Rush.
Man, since when is Rush an 80s band?

There were so many in that era that ruled...
Let's see...
Dragonforce?
Seriously, Motley Crue was best in 80's, there new stuff isn't half bad, but the glam/metal look was better than the actual metal look and waaay better than the actual glam look.

And Kev asked my question for me, Rush was more of a 70's band.

David Bowie, Eric Clapton. Not very many bands. Squeeze, mostly, Fine Young Cannibals, some others.

Skid Row hands down, and The Cure.

That's a hard one. Maybe Death, but their best work wasn't released until the 90s. So I'm going to have to go with Agent Steel or Vio-lence or Helloween's Keepers... albums, or something of that like.

You can argue that, they had a different sound in the 80's than the 70's. 70's was more hard rock and what not.
Iron Maiden without a doubt. Got me into music with such meaningful solos and power

Another contender, in my opinion, is the Happy Mondays.

I am disappointed by the lack of Death. This band is better than any 80's band and pumped out brilliant and awesome fucking albums. Not one of the albums sucked, the fathers of Death Metal kicks all of your bands asses.

Actually, Death came up 8 posts before you mentioned them.

Fucking Sepultura. I love their earliest stuff. I liked it when Max started adding tribal shit to their music, but the late 80's Death Metal is definitely the shit.

I'm wavering between Iron Maiden and Journey here...
Dunno. The 80's had SO much great material, it would be like trying to find the shinest diamond out of a bucketful of them.
Motley Crue(so pissed off I didn`t get tickets for when they were playing close to my town).

Duran Duran are good, but you already said them. Plus, my favorite stuff by them didn't come out until the 90's. And they're not as good as Michael Jackson. Try to listen to Billie Jean without dancing.

Actually, yeah. Motley Crue. Just looking at a picture of them in the 80s gives you an idea of what the entire music industry was like back then. Big hair, big make-up, and big egos. The egos thing kind of always applies, though.

U2 were in their prime in the 80s. Joshua Tree and War, two of their best albums, came during this time. Since then they've been in a steady decline into shite.

Joy Division and The Smiths.
Pretty much this. Also New Order, Depeche Mode and their ilk and 80's hip-hop like Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick and Ultramagnetic MC's since they paved the way for a lot of modern electronica.

Their style changed a bit, but I still love their 80s albums. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is great. And their live album Delicate Sound of Thunder was great too, perhaps better than Pulse.
