View Full Version : I want to buy a guitar
I have 200 bucks and an old amp my friend gave me. What kind of guitar should I buy with 200 bucks, I am actually pretty good for someone who does not own a guitar.

Buy a crappy one. If later on you decide you like it enough, save up some money and get a decent one.
Trust me, a lot of people pick up guitar and within a year are sick of it.

This is true. A Yamaha Pacifica (http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-PAC012DLX-Pacifica-HSS-Deluxe-Electric-Guitar?sku=519177) would probably be fine. They're also usually the best quality and have the most bang-for-your-buck-ness of all the guitars the price range.

A low-end Epiphone Les Paul (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Special-II-Electric-Guitar-100001870-i1149986.gc) is probably the way to go with your first guitar. Besides them being cheap, they have great sound and are very durable.

Some low-end Les Pauls are great, but their quality control is iffy at.

He's not worthy of a Les Paul, dammit :argh:
A lot of people have been recommending the Epiphone Les Paul, I am probably going to end up with that. While I am here any good songs to learn at first.

Get lessons. A teacher will be able to test you out, work out how good you are, what style you're into, etc, and recommend songs accordingly, and walk you through them step by step. Also, they'll give you songs just out of your abilities, and push you to improve.

Epiphone is probably your best bet for if you just want a cheapo to start out with. Quality really shouldn't be a big issue at the stage you are at of just beginning.

$200 is going to get you a shitty guitar so just spend as little money as possible because your guitar isn't going to be good. And learn Stairway to Heaven.

Don't forget to play Stairway in the guitar shop when buying your second guitar, they'll totally give you a discount!

No, when you play Stairway, the clerk slaps his hand over your fretboard and points to the "No Stairway" sign.

I'm going to use this thread instead of making my own.
I'm thinking about buying a bass guitar. But I don't know anything about guitars. Price doesn't really matter but I want something cheap because I'm just learning and I don't know if I'll stick with it. Someone tell me what to buy! I'm going to some warehouse tomorrow because I can get a discount. I'm just looking around for now, I'm probably not going to buy until after Christmas.

You're starting you say? Barely learning? A starter pack, especially that of the Ibanez brand will be your best friend

It was my first bass, and it was given to me by a friend who had moved on to bigger and better basses. It was used, but it was still pretty damn good for my first bass.

Yeah, really, any starter pack will do you fine. When you're at that end of the spectrum, all brands are going to be of similar quality, and different people will just tell you their preferred brand. Just get the cheapest pack you can, in my opinion.

Yeah, don't be afraid to buy cheap. I got my guitar and amp for $150 combined. I'd say it is a pretty good guitar (the amp sucked though).
A good friend of mine went to a guitar shop. He can't play guitar for shit and he tried to play Stairway. He was escorted off the premises.

Get a mexican or chineese Strat. Great sound, tons of the classics are played on a fender strat. They are cheap and the way to go.

While on the topic of good guitars... I play guitar in a friends Ska band, and have really liked the results of using an acoustic guitar in place of electric. Has more of a full sound to it. Another thing I've come to really enjoy is another friend's twelve string guitar, which just bellows with an unmatched sound quality. So in order to combine all these, I've decided that for Christmas I'm going to try to find a good 12-String Acoustic Electric Guitar. Phew. Most of my income will be going to Christmas presents for others & lunch money.
I don't want to ask for anything over $500, preferably around $250-300. Given that price range, could anyone recommend a good sounding and dependable 12-String Acoustic Electric Guitar? Thanks in advance.
I figure this is close enough to the original topic to be relevant and pointless to make an entirely new thread for it.

Don't forget that most metal guitarists use a sound pedal to achieve their deep sound. It might be a little early but you might want to consider it.

I'm going to ignore the price tag because I have no idea what country you're in and so couldn't tell you what kind of price you'd be looking at, but a decently priced, good sounding, dependable 12 string acoustic, you can't look past Takamine. Their 12 strings are amazing.

Unless they are using a good Tube driven head. Every guitarist I have played metal with did not get their base heavy sound from a stomp box. Marshall, Krank, Mesa etc.
