Should Threads Evolve?

My question to the public is "Should threads evolve as the discussion carries on?" I pulled this from my comment on the Twilight thread. Some of you may be curious as to why this thread is in the Literature/Fine Arts forum. I put it here simply due to the fact that most of the posts here seem to lead to arguements that have the tendency to move away from the initial topic of discussion. Should threads evolve as they are discussed or should we try to keep the threads on topic? Perhaps a bit of both? I'm open to all opinions. By the way I will play the devil's advocate in order to open up new ideas and ways of thinking.

I don't believe in the evolution of threads. I believe that the lord, our god, has given us the ideas of the threads. And if he intended on the threads to naturally evolve, then they would have been born with wings in the first place.

But evolving contradicts the very purpose of threads. Threads exist so people can discuss a certain topic, do they not? By evolving the threads, one eliminates their function. If a person opens up a thread to discuss or give their opinion on say...the structure of the economy and finds out the thread has turned into a discussion about how to breed dogs (quite an exeggeration, I know) then why even bother posting threads in the first place?

This is in response to Oooof4LiFe and yes I'm guessing you were being being sarcastic but nonetheless. Well things in nature evolve, don't they? That's the problem with the AIDs virus. It constantly evolves in order to counteract the drugs administered. Evolution is a natural process so why should threads not be subject to it?

I think threads should evolve because it is far more entertaining than sticking to the original topic. It is also more realistic this way due to any conversation's tendency to drift into something else. It also saves space, due to the multiple topics being discussed that would otherwise have the potential to be their own separate threads.
