View Full Version : Donating Blood

So my school had a blood drive today and apparently got around 300 pints of blood which is a district record. I'm 5 foot 6 and i weigh 135 pounds, i gave the full pint of blood and felt fine afterwords.

The kid next to me who was an 18 year old muscular football player passed out as soon as he stood up.

So here is a few questions

1. Do they really need blood as bad as they let on?

2. Why did i feel fine but he passed?

3, Have you ever donated blood?

4. Did you pass out?

I thought it was interesting and fun at the same time even though the guy doing my procedure (Is that what you call it?) missed my vein and had to go back in 2 times.

How about you Explosm?

1. God, yes. They really, really do.

Because by the time you go hypovolumic (really low blood volume), you've an average of three minutes to replace that lost volume or you're gonna die. And IV's of saline and blood thinners can't substitue real human blood, they just encourage your body to produce more, or help your body use the blood it has more efficently. If you need a blood transfusion, it's because your body has lost so much blood it's going into shock and is physically incapable of making up the blood loss.

Hospitals, trauma centers EMT's, they're all trying to pre-stage human blood so that its available when and where it's needed most. That's a lot of volume that needs to be shipped around the world, and with the War on Terror, agencies are trying to have an emergency supply on tap as well. And don't forget, blood is only good for so long. We can prolong it's shelf life, but it will expire.

2. You probably felt fine because you react differently to trauma than he did.
About 2 years ago I went through the Army's Combat Life-Saver course. Really good shit. Learned a lot, including how to run IV's, set up transfsions, stick an artery, etc. People were passing out all over the place. When someone sticks you, and you bleed, your body thinks it's undergoing physcial trauma, and trys to save itself. But it fails, and goes into shock.

Basically, shock occurs when your body tries to save all the blood it can for the vital centers, like your lungs and heart. Unfortunitely, sometimes it draws blood away from your brain, and you pass out. In serious cases, left untreated, you could die.

Anyway, for many people, just seeing their own blood is enough to trigger a shock response. You're friend's reaction isn't that uncommon. Many people alos pass out after a donation, because they're blood suger is too low, and they shock and pass out. That's why you're supposed to eat a cookie or drink orange juice or something afterwards.

3. All the time. It's important, especially if you have a rare blood type O neg, or AB positive.

4. Naw, not me. I drink lots of water before, and eat a cookie after.

I've passed out once before when giving blood, it's because it was early in the morning and I didn't have enough sugar in me as I didn't eat. Either that or I'm a HUUUUUGE pussy.

I did it once, I went all light headed, it was great. Downside was that I couldn't drink for a few days...

They were very thorough though you had to weigh a certain amount and they checked the amount of Iron in your blood

One guy from my school did go into shock and he went to the hospital in an ambulance.

I've given blood at least twice I think. I've never passed out; I've only gotten as far as feeling light-headed and just a little dizzy. I always have Oreos or other cookies afterwards. :douchecock: I didn't know that's why you needed some immediately afterwards.

CasinoCloudz
11-13-2008, 5:54 PM
I had oreos too!

But yeah, they were also very through, they measured the iron in my blood and checked at least 8 times that it was actually me before i donated. But it was my first time so now im getting a donor card.

I have donated blood 4 times so far. Mainly because after 2 months or so Red Cross calls my house everyday trying to set up an appointment, and I've never felt sick at all after donating blood. I've always been fine.

One time, when i was finished donating I was sitting at the table eating snacks and what not, a lady said she was feeling sick, and then proceeded to barf all over the floor :barf:. It was pretty funny.

That said, I really encourage people to donate blood. It's a great was to help out your fellow Americans.

I pass out when doctors draw small amounts of blood from me for testing, I couldn't imagine giving any more. I'm perfectly fine with shots and needles and everything, and I always look away when they're drawing my blood, but I just can't help it. I just have to lay down otherwise I know I'll crash.

I've lost count on how many times I've donated blood as being in the military it's asked of us a lot. The cause is usually for our brothers and sisters in combat. I typically feel fine whenever I donate, never anything like light-headedness or dizziness. Some people are okay with it and some people react to it.

I've given blood a few times as part of a group I was in one time or another. Sometimes our hockey team would do it, and others it was the guys at Shito-Ryu, but I don't think I've ever passed out. I saw one kid pass out afterwards, but he was pretty small and didn't seem like he really wanted to do it in the first place. I like the cookies.

So here is a few questions

1. Do they really need blood as bad as they let on? Yes they really need blood,

Next time you are standing in a room with sixty people look around 30 of the people of the people are eligable to donate, only one of them does. And 8 need blood.
2. Why did i feel fine but he passed?
Maybe he doesn't like needles, or he may not have had enough iron in his blood. It could be anything.

3, Have you ever donated blood?
Yes I just donated some blood last week, so awesome(I saved three lives)
4. Did you pass out?
Hell no I'm not a wimpy girl.

I gave blood because when I was born I needed a blood transfusion and so it's partly my way of thanking the person by paying it forward and also the good it does bring. I'm doing a persuasive speech to cinvince people to donate blood in december I think it's an excellant idea.

I hate giving blood, It's a horrible procedure for me. I passed out the first time I had it done, right in the middle of it and then woke back up at the end and threw up. That's the only time I've given blood and the last time if I don't ever need to again.
For some reason my body reacts horribly to giving blood, even the idea of giving blood makes me light headed. It's kind of ridiculous, but just reading the first post/first couple of reply's made me start feeling lightheaded and I had to stop reading...

I really want to donate blood, but there are rules right? Like no drugs in your system for 3 months, and at least somewhat good levels of iron?
I've thought about it for a really long time, i guess i just have to get myself healthy first.

Theres a long for you have to check, like wether you've taken tylonel in the last so many hours, any STD's you've had, in the last six months had you had any sexual relationships with men who you don't know their sexual history, have they had sex with another man even once, have you done coke ever, have you recieved blood from South Africa since 1977 ect. They also test your blood for any STD's before giving the blood to anyone.

Oh and you have to have enough iron in your body(eat liver or steak the night before it helps) and a drop of blood has to sink to the bottom within fifteen seconds this is a way of testing iron levels

Thats so true, that would be so awful to be given blood to find out that it will kill you/ give you something. For example in the 80's when there was people who got AIDS from getting blood transfusions.

I wish I could give blood but I'm anemic, or I was, so they don't want my blood. The few times I've gotten blood tests I've passed out. Most likely because you aren't supposed to eat 24 hours before you get the test or the whole anemia thing.

They have way to many rules on giving blood. Which makes no sense because the 'need' it so badly.

My physics teacher shared his view on this, and I agreed with it. He believed it should be law if eligible people did not give blood then it should be marked on their drivers license. If that person did not give blood he believes they shouldn't get blood.

That being said I've never given blood but I can't. I'm not sure on all the details but something about living in Europe during that Mad Cow deal. They have no way to test it or something is what my mom told my sister and me when we got back.

Amazingly
11-13-2008, 8:16 PM
1. Yeah. Blood expires fairly quickly, and also is used in fairly large quantities when a transfusion is needed. Also, a blood bank you give to can cover a very large area.

2.Depends on how you react to trauma.

3. Yeah.

4. Nope, I did what you did. I actually felt better and was able to think more clearly afterwards. And when they stick me, I have to watch or I'll get nervous and start trembling.

Oh also there's a quote somewheres that the rarest type of blood is the blood thats not on the shelf when needed. If more people donated then there would be more of a certain type of blood on the shelves.

The reason O- is so rare is because it's the universal donor. Everyone can recieve it, AB- is the universal recipient I believe so their blood isn't rare.

And they had to tweek the needle in my arm, left an interesting bruise you could see where the needle had been and where it ended up.

I give blood whenever I can. The only time I'm not allowed to is within 12 months of having a tattoo done, which meant I've rarely had the opportunity of late.

The only time I've ever felt anything was when I gave blood at uni and hit the pub straight afterwards. Only had a couple of schooners but ended up having my vision go completely white and had to lay on a hill for an hour until it cleared and I could head on home.

Also, if you have a little anaesthetic before the real needle, you're a pussy. Just get the fucker shoved in, wimps.

Actually I believe AB- is the rarest blood type, and I think it's AB+ that's the universal recipient. The negatives are the ones in demand, mainly O-, because they can go to either + or -.

I've got AB-, so that means only AB+ and AB- can use my blood. I've only given it once, I should probably do it again.

One time was pretty painful though when the lady kept twisting and turning the needle in my arm because she couldn't find the vein. Fun times.

I gave blood yesterday.

I've been waiting to do it for a couple of months, but the first time I went, turned out I was anaemic and got told to sort my diet out or suffer the consequences. Then I went again a few weeks after, and got turned away cos I was on antibiotics.

So yeah, yesterday went pretty well. I didn't feel any mal-effects following giving blood, despite having nothing to eat or drink all day apart from a wispa (http://www.ben-yates.co.uk/images/columns/50_wispa.jpg), a twirl (http://www.sweet-temptations.ca/images/Twirl.gif) and a can of relentless (http://www.comunitazione.it/img/1840/coca-cola-relentless-energy-drink..jpg) (didn't tell the nurse that, though). In Perth, you get a light meal. Dunno where you are.

I got into it when my cousin's kid needed a bunch of transfusions, and the hospital was asking for relatives who could help out. I'm able to donate to anyone, so I was like yeah, no worries.

That was when I was 15, now I'm 21, and I donate 3-4 times per year (save for right now, since I'm overseas, and after I got sick in Central America). There's really no reason for anyone not to do it, save for a clinical fear of needles or having some sort of blood-related illness.

If you need blood some day and you haven't donated, karma's gonna fuck you up.

I've given blood quite a few times and I only get dizzy if I don't eat before hand (which is my own fault). I should really get back into the routine of donating.

I used to "donate" plasma (they call it donating, but you get paid for it). For those that don't know: that's a several hour process in which they cycle your blood through a machine, remove the plasma, and cycle the blood back into your body. Because you get most of your blood back, you can do this twice a week. I usually got slightly sick during this process, and I fainted once. But the money was good so I put up with it. I was banned from donating eventually because my veins are small and would usually explode causing some pretty serious bruising. If needles don't bother you, and you don't have the same vein problems as I do, I'd recommend looking into plasma donating as a way to make extra cash. I just did my homework there while they bled me. It was an easy 50 dollars a week.

Is it more important to donate blood if you have a rare blood type or a common one?
Also, what are some common and rare blood types?

And a blood related story, when I was about 8 my dad took me for his appointment to give blood. The guy taking his blood must've been new or something, because when he stuck the needle in my dad starting spurting blood like Old Faithful. I thought this was way cool. My dad hates blood though so he almost blacked out.
THE END.

Which sux for the wanting to help side of me and is awesome for the i hate needles side of me! I've also watched a really touch football player passout from it. while a little cheerleader was fine.

How much do you get paid for the plasma?

Hmm...well you can do it twice a week, and at $50 a week, 50/2=...umm
Like ten bucks or something

It depends on what company you go through and their local offices. I went to BioLife and they had it set up where you were paid 20 dollars the first visit of the week and 30 the second visit in a way to support those who would donate twice a week.

Giving blood is no big deal for me. I do get really weak afterwards but I think it has something to do with me being 5'3" and basically draining half my body of blood.
The first time I donated I was hooked up to one of the anticoagulant machines which pumps an anticoagulant into your body. My friend told me it was awesome and you got all tingly so I was all excited to try it. Turns out I couldn't feel my fingers because of the stuff and stopped sqeezing the little ball and almost passed out. Had an interesting talk with the guy doing it about Che Guevara though which was cool.

The 2nd time I had some badass old guy who could wiggle his ears. He kept telling me jokes. I think everyone thought I was insane because I was laughing my ass off while the needle was in my arm and finished within like 10 minutes. Later on in the day I got really tired and a couple of people were worried about my health (I guess I looked slightly pale).

But yeah, donate blood. It's cool and you get food and T-Shirts and stickers. Screw saving lives.

If they would come to my house while I was nerding it up on the computer, took my blood and left some money on my desk then left - I would be more than willing to give blood!

I would also donate a sperm if the process was similar

Jealous, I wish the people talked more when I donated, but the nurses where in my way. And I wish they talked about him he's so interesting.

I've only ever done the ones the put on at my school. Most of the people are these grumpy middle aged ladies who look like they could kill a kid and not even feel regret.
I was actually wearing my Che shirt and the guy was just kinda like "Hey, is that Che? Tell me what you know about him"

1. Yeah, the blood is constantly being used, so they need a constant supply, plus if it doesn't get used it "goes bad" in a week or so.
2. Either he stood up far too quickly, or something about his physiology was different to yours.
3. Yes, twice.
4. No.

You had a shit nurse if he missed the vein twice o.o

1.) no it's a scam.

2.) the football player was an anemic faggot. Must of been on his period.

3.) I do it whenever I can. I like giving blood for some reason. plus you can get super drunk afterwards from like 2-3 beers
4.) no, I'm not an anemic faggot on his period.
