View Full Version : Lights Above Us
I always would jam with my friend at school while we wait for the bus. He played some really cool stuff and we've been playing for a lil' over a year together. Recently I joined his solo-music project as a drummer, and I personally think it's really cool music for high school kids. He recorded and released his album a while ago, and I played drums on the tracks because he couldn't play them that well. But officially I have just joined him and we're writing more material, probably soon to record again. It's instrumental, except for 2 tracks having some atmospheric vocals on them, but it's really cool and some of you more avant-garde fans might dig it. If you're a fan of Explosions In The Sky, Minus The Bear, or maybe Giraffes? Giraffes!... I would check it out. Definitely listen to "Streetlights" or "All Of My Friends Are Wolves..."
Here's the Last.Fm page. (http://www.last.fm/music/Lights+Above+Us)
The only problems you might notice is that the drums are electric, only because we didn't have the recording quality for a real set, and the electric set recorded much better.

I like it, but the vocals on that one song almost ruined it for me.
If you kept it just instrumental, it'd be really cool.

I really dig it in a big bad way. I gave quite a few of the tracks a listen and downloaded all of them. It's well put together and a good listen.

How did you download them?
I think I'm just stupid or something.

I'll be downloading it once I get on my pc, only listened to one track so far but it's pretty good stuff.

Go down to the bottom where it says "Top Albums" and click on the album. You'll be able to download all the songs from there.

Yeah, normally we didn't think of vocals, but he added them one day, and I liked it cause it was more of like the voice becoming an instrument, like singing a part I could see a synth playing, not standing out in front of the song saying "Look at me, read my lyrics."

I think it sounds pretty good so far. Probably end up downloading some of them later.

I am very impressed. It's incredibly chill, with a cool post-rock flavor. I'm downloading for my Zune as we speak.
You managed to sound like two of my favorite bands as well :hmm:

Yeah well I don't deserve really any credit. My friend writes all of the music, I just show up and play some beats, and then we choose which one fits the song best. He's a junior in high school and it just amazes me how complex and advanced his work is compared to other kids.
I listened through the entire album at work tonight. Twice. Honestly, it's some of the best instrumental stuff I've heard in a long time. It's very diggable.
Some self-righteous bump here:
We have a Myspace and we randomly have songs we just worked on uploaded on to the playlist, "Helicopter" is the most recent recording. If you guys wanted to check some out that'd be cool. Linkage (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=390121413)
Note how this was a solo-project before I joined, so he still credits himself as the sole musician on the Myspace, but I assure you he only plays guitar and can't even play drums at all, false advertising.

Living In Space would have sounded better if it remained in 7/8 time for the first 40 odd seconds imo.
The writing is pretty good for a high school kid.
Your drumming is very very tight, Shagg! Did you record the electric kit as MIDI and mess about with it or is it all pure audio? I like the electronic beats on Helicopter a lot. No surprises there, though.
