I've been at my computer working on my final paper for my Early British Lit classes for seventeen straight hours now, and I can't help but wonder what kind of finals other people are taking right now.
What kind of shit do your teachers make you do at the end of the semester?
Any memorably horrible final exams?
Also, do you have any tricks for getting through final exam time?
My trick is that I change all the periods in my papers from 12 to 14 point font. It's not noticeable to the eye at all, but it helps a hell of a lot on marathon papers. I've written 16 pages so far, but changing the periods gives me 17.

I hang all the work I've done during the semester on the walls and we have a go around and see if I've improved and then I get an A. Oh art college. :shobon:

I have a history piece to start, and well, finish in two days. It's not too long being 3,000 words but considering I'll end up writing double I have no idea how I'm going to cut it down.

I'm halfway through finals. Yesterday I had two exams, one in geography and the other in geology. The geography one went well, I think.
The geology one was in two parts, the first part being the third section of the course, and the second part being the first two sections of the course. Pretty straightforward. I did poorly on the first part; didn't study all that much for it. The second part, however, was made entirely up of duplicate test questions from his only two other midterms of the year, AND, he let us them to study. Because I studied those exams just before, it was pretty much the easiest test ever.
Tomorrow I have a Japanese exam... so I'm trying to learn a bunch of Kanji the night before. Not fun.
Monday I have another geography exam (Geography is my major). Not overly worried about that one.
I don't really have any tricks. I tend to have a hard time studying when I'm still busy working, so I booked off about 10 days for exams. I'm lucky my boss likes me. Most of the time I study with music playing, usually sans-vocals, but not always.
I just tried the period trick -- it works quite well, hah.
I had a final exam today that will be pretty memorable the question was: Choose three characters from the workss of literature we read and tell me what kind of pizza they would be. There were also questions about what would happen if I were to go on a blind date with one of the characters and the last question was had us write a eulogy to all literature.

Tell me you're not serious?
Honest to god these were the questions(he gave them to us on a study sheet) The works of literature covered included Hamlet, Richard lll, Odepius Rex, and Young Goodman Brown. How easy is that?
1. Are any of these works dangerous to one’s health? If so, what sort of surgeon general’s warning would you write for any future readers of these works of literature (like the types of warnings that appear on packages of cigarettes)?
2. What stars of today’s media would you cast in the role of particular characters? Who, in particular, would you cast as Hamlet? Why? Who’d be particularly good at delivering the famous “To be or not to be” speech—why? Why would that actor’s performance fit the speech’s theme?
3. If you had to buy a Christmas present for a few of the characters from the works we read during the second-half of the semester, what sort of presents would you buy? Why?
4. Imagine some of the characters, authors, or literary critics (i.e. Bloom and Freud) going on dates and hooking-up generally. Which would make good couples (they don’t have to be from the same work of literature)? Which would make disastrous couples? Why?
5. Imagine yourself going on blind dates with five or six of the characters (not all at once!—one at a time!). Which dates do you think would be successful? Which not? Why?
6. Imagine discussing Oedipus the King with your mother. How would it play out?
7. Imagine a few of the characters confronting their authors. Would they be angry with the roles that were assigned them by their authors? Or would they be happy? What would the exchange be like?
8. Imagine a renaissance teenage kid who has medieval parents—and imagine the kid has just been to see the latest Shakespeare (let’s say it’s Hamlet or Richard III) play and loved it. Imagine the argument between the kid and his parents, who hate Shakespeare.
9. If each of the characters were a pizza—what kind of pizza would they be—why?
This is not a high school final exam. It is a college final exam.

How do you answer this? "I think Hamlet would be an anchovy pizza because anchovies, like regicidal uncles, are an undesirable pizza topping."

Ho ho, well I'm glad he cleared that up!
Seriously, that's the most amazingly retarded exam I've ever seen. Surely your professor would seek to redeem english literature as a general subject rather than make it look stupid with such inane questions. I feel sorry for you having to sit that (although, I do think you could get some amazing answers to those questions if you took the piss).
I just had stupid comprehensive bullshit and some papers.
I passed everything. I think I've lost my scholarship, though.

Holy crap, koots, that's basically an exercise in creative writing. When I did my (high school) English exams, it always come down to symbolism.
I find the best study 'trick' is get a hold of as many past exams as possible. The current exam never seems to deviate much, question and content wise, from the previous years. That's what got me through maths, anyway.
I was also examined on Remote Sensing and photogrammetry this year, both of which I find interesting. And it's always easier to study if the topic doesn't bore me to death.

I've got my first exams in a series that lasts 2 weeks tomorrow. I know I should be studying now, but I just don't really feel like it. It's math, and math was pretty simple for me this year since it was only Algebra and Geom 2. It sucks that I know my copy of GTA 4's going to arrive this week though. That'll be a major distraction.

The more I read those through the better they are at testing you. You have to know and understand the characters, rather than just learn literary criticism parrot-fashion.
If you don't fully understand and grasp the significance of the personality of the character, and their positions within the narrative, you can't make a decent judgement. Its more a test of how well you understand the book than how well you understand the writing techniques.

Fuck, I hate that. Every semester around this time I have the same worry about scholarships. It's the worst.
I finished my 20 pager, now I just have a big 'ol Modern US History final today and I'll finally be done.

I had to write a piece about Roman history, about how the Romans were able to conquer their huge empire and keep it with a relatively low amount of problems.
I'm not finished with it yet, and I'm at 30,000 words at the moment. It is the biggest (and worst) piece I ever had to write.

I have a final in Art History, US History, Calculus BC, and French Language. Possibly going to have to take a final in Chemistry and American Lit if my grade drops by friday.
I was pretty prepared for my finals this semester until my literature theory prof decided it would be a wonderful idea to give us a 15 page surprise exam to do over the weekend. Screwed up my entire plan.

I have my A level modules coming up in January and I'm absolutely shitting myself :frown: I need 2 As and a B to get into the course I want and so far I'm working around the level of 2 Bs and a really low A.
So I hope you all have a merry fucking Christmas and go to lots of fun parties and booze ups while I sit in my room learning about poems, Hitler and volcanoes.
:frown::frown::frown:
I've got exams on Virgil's Aeneid and Political Theory next week, pretty screwed for both. Hoping that in between work and sleep I'll be able to cram enough to scrape a pass.
But considering I'm procrastinating online instead of studying, that hope may be a little far fetched.

I love that my exams are before Christmas !

I had an ad due for a Consumer Psychology class. Today I had a Bio lab test that was all about genes. Tomorrow I have to take an education class exam then I am done. It was a pretty easy semester for me.

Koots, by the look of those questions I'm quite certain I would have to kill something after finishing, that's insane, though BlackHood does have a damn good point.
I have one final that should be a true, scratchy, pain in the ass. I missed one class this semester in Drafting and Computer Aided Design. It just so happens that it was that very class in which the teacher gave us our final assignments before we started the final, but he gave no handouts on the final, only lectured. And no one bothered to tell me. When I complained to the teacher, he asked me why I hadn't bothered to ask why we weren't working on a final yet. My reply?
"Well, because we normally have a simple exam and the date for this period's final was a fucking month away."
Needless to say, he wasn't entertained. Not that he would've been lenient if I hadn't said that.
At any rate, I'm now down to three days to design a house on paper, make a floor plan, electrical plan, a heating and duct plan, and a front exterior elevation in AutoCAD, and I have just finished the first floor of my floor plan. Am I fucked? Probably, but thankfully this is one of those classes in which everyone works at their own pace, so he will probably accept some drawings next semester.

Thankfully I don't have exams ever again, but when I did I never actually studied. I was always bad at studying and would get distracted. The way I saw it was, if I didn't learn it in class obviously it's not important.
But my one exam nightmare story is from my last ever university exams: My university exams were always over two weeks. The weekend before the second week I was at work... and broke my wrist. I had two more exams to do, two days later on the same day. The first exam I got through okay just taking pain killers and writing left handed for most of it which was an extremely slow process. By the time I got to the second exam I was soo over it. The second exam was all theory and there's no way I'm writing whole essays left handed so twenty minutes into the exam I just left. Ended up failing the exam (obviously) but passing uni thankfully.
Weren't finals but got knocked off my bike on the way home from an exam that I failed. That was a bad day

Dammit. I have semester exams in a few weeks, and I'm deffinately am not looking forward to them.
Last year I took French exams, and those sucked so much ass. I failed both of the exams, mainly becaue I hated french. My parents wouldn't let me drop it either. So then I got yelled at when I failed the class.

I actually just finished my content classes for my Master's program. I finished writing a 12 page paper about designing curriculum. Before that I wrote to another standard about how students learn and that was a good 11 pages. And I recently finished a unit on systems of government. The unit ended up being 30 pages or so. I'm so sick of writing papers.

I'm in the same boat but working at UUU, so you're lucky. I've missed half of my lessons so far and I don't have a pen.
I have three exams in January on physical geology, fossils and basic geochemistry. They're piss easy, really. Yay for being a first year scientist, boo for an easy course.

To write papers
For my first exam, I woke up at 8:30am to a blinking clock when the test started at 8am. I rushed to school just in time to run into my professor as he was locking his door. I told him the situation and he was a dick about it at first. Whenever I told him I'd pass his class anyway, but would probably lose my scholarship, he allowed me to come back and make it up.
For another class, I came to the wrong session of test-taking. You know, about a week late. Luckily the professor was cool about it and I got to take my exam normally.

Dude, relax! My final paper for Masters degree was almost a hundred pages, plus I had to write different papers in different courses and those papers were around 20 pages each, so..
We had to use 1.5 line spacing in our works, so whenever I wanted to add a little bulk, I used 1.6 or more. Not a lot more, because that would show, but just enought to get the pages I needed. And then again, when I thought I have more to say than the page numbers allowed, I used 1.4 and less, to get more text on the same page. Tampering with the margins of the papers layout does the trick also.
Luckily, I ended up with a 3.07 (with a 3.0 require to keep my scholarship), and I didn't even turn in one of my final papers.

My calculus final exam was a nightmare. I'm in a dual enrollment calculus class at my high school, and the exam was epic fail.
We took the first half of the exam on these wierd remote controls. We had to plug in the answer for each problem, and at the end of the exam it was possible to get the grade back immediately.
17 people failed in a class of 22. The highest grade was an 88. The other 3 who passed got 70s. After that, there weren't any grades higher than a 50.
That's not too bad. If she had been like "I probably need to curve this", I wouldn't be so pissed off. No, though. No. She comes into class the next day with the other half of the exam and says "OMFG I'M SO DISAPPOINTED IN YOU ALL. WTH THERE WAS NO REASON FOR EVERY ONE OF YOU TO FAIL!!! YOU ALL HAD BETTER GET AT LEAST B'S ON THIS SECOND HALF OR ELSE."
So apparently it's not her fault at all that we've all just failed her final exam. It has nothing to do with her crappy teaching skills or the fact that she's a terrible test maker.
Ugh, I know it sounds like I'm whining, and I am. But I just don't want to fail out of this test (because it's 20% of our grade. I really, REALLY don't want to be removed from second semester.)

An attitude like that doesnt deserve to keep a scholarship. I've worked my butt off to get mine and I'm still $5,000 short. A scholarship has conditions for a reason. but then maybe i dont know the circumstances....

In all fairness, I've never been of the belief that I deserve a scholarship. I meandered through high school. I made A's, B's, C's, and D's in high school. I managed a 3.5 somehow back then. I made a 28 on my ACT. Somehow this merited most of my college being paid for.
However, I have actually been working in college. The paper I didn't turn in was because I had a lot of worked stressing me out, and turning that in wouldn't have changed my grade in that class (my only C) at all, so it was unimportant.
I have two exams today. One from 12 pm-2pm and one from 2pm-4pm. I'm not very happy.
