One of my all-time favourite songs:

Rain, by Trivium.

No song link, but I have a YouTube link to the official video:

I'm not that much into metal, but I fucking love Tugnut. They're weird experimental screamo-metal with a bunch of distortian and weird noises. Not for the faint of heart.

I couldn't find a music link either for this band, so there's a YouTube link instead.

The band is Violent Work Of Art. They're a Swedish industrial metal band that combine heavy metal with techno and trance music.

This isn't really their best, but I can't find anything from their latest album.

Who else is a fan? Seriously, no one knows about them. The vocals are so badass.

09-06-2007, 5:43 PM
Probably no one knows about them because the "metalheads" these days don't like real metal, but instead trendy scene crap.

Carcass are killer. Necroticism is one of the defining metal albums of the 90s and Carcass were one of the leading bands of that Golden Era. Others include Obituary, Entombed, Cathedral and Bolt Thrower.

One guy actually complained on youtube that their hair was too long.

It should be the opposite; Metal bands should have long hair, if they don't it just turns me off. Like a guy moaning in porn.

Again, they're not black metal. :facts2:

I know their myspace page says gospel/punk/hardcore but they are none of those 3 genres. Maybe their new album is going that way, but the other 3 albums are mainly black metal with a few sides orders thrown in for good measure. That's what I reckon anyway!

EDIT: Definitely get hold of In Flames, they're excellent.

I've listened to their "How the Great Have Fallen" CD and it's more groove metal if you ask me. Black metal is bands like Emperor, Enslaved, Immortal, Gorgoroth, Mayhem, etc. RS really doesn't fit the bill for a typical black metal band.

I'm into black metal, mostly. Here's Carpathian Forest live at Wacken Open Air (best metal concert thingy out there IMO). Yes, they're "mainstream" as far as metal bands go, but I think they're still great.

Not as big of a metalhead as Andro.

Sometimes I'm suprised at how many different types there are. But I can tell the difference now, after immersing myself in it for quite some time. To a beginner it's difficult to tell the difference between Death Metal and Grindcore (and even harder to tell the difference between those and Death Grind). But the differences are definately there, and make a large impact on the fanbase.

Quick question: If Slipknot and KoRn aren't metal, then what genre are they?

Pop Rock, nothing more.

Sometimes I'm suprised at how many different types there are.

There are only a handful of genres. Black, Death, Doom and plain old Heavy Metal. You might be able to make a tenuous case for some branches, but really, going beyond those four is just artsy wankery, which is an extremely anti-metal thing to be. It's the typical "Oh, I can over-analyse things cause I'm so hardcore!" attitude.

Sorry, MA, because you do seem to have a good knowledge of metal, but in this case you're just an artsy wanker like all the other scene metallers. (You do have the best taste on these forums, however, even if it does include a helluva lot of crap  so I won't hack on ya too much for this one thing)

You forgot Thrash :aaa:

Thrash is one of the ones where you can possibly make a case for a new genre, but still it comes under plain ol' Heavy Metal. Largely clean vocals (if a bit more aggressive) and just played a little faster than rock. Yes, it's heavier, but that's where Heavy Metal comes from. Some good music there, even if it doesn't have its own genre.

When the forum has a moderator, you could always ask them to merge the two threads into one. However I believe you can edit your first post, click the advanced tab and there should be section near the bottom called additional thread options, and a section called thread management. All you do is click the box at the bottom that says, "Close this thread after you submit your message."
