View Full Version : Apple cuts iPhone price by $200, unveils new iPods

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple today cut the price of the top iPhone by $200, discontinued the low-end model and unveiled a new version of its popular iPod media player with wireless Internet access and other iPhone features.
The 8-gigabyte iPhone will sell for $399, and the 4-gigabyte model, which sold for $399, will be phased out. The new iPods with Wi-Fi — but without cellphone capabilities — will start at $299.
As the article suggests, apple is cutting the price of their iphone down by $200, and is also releasing new iphones.
Personally, I don't think i'll ever buy an Iphone. My Samsung A707 has a 1GB memory card for music, and I don't think I need anymore storage then that. Plus it costs extra to go on the internet, so I don't even use that.

HAHAHAHAHAH I know like 6 or 7 people who bought it at 600 bucks.
Oh and Iphone blows (http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone)

Well, if I ever decide to buy one, it'll be a reason. The one with the wifi capabilities at least, have no need at all for an actual phone =p

The new Ipods are really dumb. The iTouch? It's an iPhone, minus the phone. And I like how the new iPod nano really isn't small. More like iChub.

I wish Apple hadn't went with flash memory on the Touch. The little bit of added bulk and fragility of the harddrive wouldn't be bad at all. Nobody would actually complain about a few mm's on something most have been waiting forever for, especially if it meant a full 160 gig capacity to go along with the touch screen. No thanks on the 8-16gig capacities.
If I had to choose right now I'd get an iPod Classic, 160 gigs, to efficiently quintuple my storage capacity (currently rocking a 30gig 5.5G), though I'll most likely wait for next year's update, but only if they go HDD or flash technology skyrockets. Barring those two things I'll probably just tough it out until 7G ipods come out in two years.

I think it is a smart move for apple to cut the iPhone price; but will it get me to buy it, no.
I think apple is trying to offset the fact that their iPhone has been unlocked and the backlash that you know they have received from the AT&T company.

I still love mine. Don't doubt it. It's got massive potential and flexibility.
Get a load of this:

An 8-gigabyte version of iPod Touch will cost $299. A 16-gigabyte version will cost $399
Have fun with that. I love all 30 gigs of music on my iPod and it was worth every penny.
Didn't the Iphone JUST come out?

Yeah, but this is the iPod. Duh.
Honestly the difference between the iPhone and iPod Touch are down to the fact that one has the phone feature and a much higher price. The iPod Classic is a definite step in the right direction in the classic (heh) iPod sense, as it pushes the capacity up to 160 gigs, which is just completely outrageous.

They almost have to change the phone now that people have found multiple ways to mod it off of the AT#T network. Its just like what we saw with consoles where once it got modded by the release buyers, Sony/Microsoft had to put different consoles on the market to still make a profit by selling games instead of dirt cheap computers.

I'm still not buying an iPhone. I do have a 30-gig video iPod, but I've only used about 12 gigs of it, so maybe after the new iPod Touch has been on the market for a while, and they fix all the bugs that will eventually show up, I might consider buying the 16-gig iPod Touch.

I wish they made a larger memory iPod. At the moment, I have 74GB of music (Which is just over the iPod's limit) and about 12GB of videos. It becomes a real pain in the ass to have to delete music just to use it as a storage device. Maybe if they made it bigger, they could also advertise it as a External hard drive.

GOD FUCKING DAMN!
WHY THE HELL DOES APPLE OUT DATE EVERYTHING I OWN WITHIN A MONTH?
...
First my iBook, now my nano. But that iTouch looks smexy. I only have 14 gigs, so it all fits it nicely.

The Classic is now 160 GigaBytes. Double your current storage needs.

I'll just hang onto my 2GB player, and switch out songs when I feel like it.

No it's not.
My sister bought one today since her old one broke. It's fucking tiny, smaller than the palm of your hand and insanely thin.

Agreed. I've had my 4GB Zen V for a few months now, and it's not even 1/4 full yet. I tend to use it for songs that I actually want to listen to, not to catalogue every piece of music ever made.

Yeah I got some phone with less than 1Gb of storage and I can fit more than enough music for a couple of days. It's not hard at all to switch it, so why bother paying all that money?

HAHA. Creative Zen for the win. I find it unecessary to carry your whole damn media player with you.

I have some kind of a noname 512 mb for which has been working well for over a year now. A single rechargable AAA battery lasts 3-4 days when I use it 1-2 hours a day. After that I just replace the battery and music. Actually I had another noname one before that, but it kinda melted in my pocket because the battery short circuited and the store gave me another player and new batteries.

Haha I thought it was really funny when my friend told me about this, since he waited in line at iPhone launch, payed $600 and all he had to do was wait 2 months and he would have been able to buy it at $400.
When they make an ipod touch that has at least 30 gigs and not to expensive ill probably get it though thats still some time from now. So for now ill stick with my trusty 30 gig black ipod thank you very much.

I see the capacity of the Touch getting upped to at least 30 gigs next august-september, especially with how the flash harddrive is evolving, and the speed at which it is. There's also the slight chance that Apple will get its shit together and realize many more people would buy the Touch if it had at least a 30-60 gig capacity, even if it means HDD format. The size difference is negligable, but nobody wants to admit it. No matter what happens though, I guarantee an upgrade to both the Classic and Touch next August-September (6.5G iPod and 1.5G Touch).

What the hell would you do with a 30 gig iPod? What would you put that much of on it to suffice paying £X00 for it?

I'm curious to know what kind of Wi-Fi the ITouch comes on. Will the owner need to pay a monthly fee, or will they be charged per website visited? If it's the latter, it's not worth it.
I have an IPod video now (2nd to last generation before this one. Basically the same IPod video that we before this generation, but the newer ones have better batteries) and I love it to death. The only thing I would complain about is the battery, which is beginning to die (I need to charge it every second day or so, vs. the once a week before) even though I replaced it recently. It's not worth getting a new battery, so I can see myself getting one of these IPods in the near future.
Deimor: I have a 30gig video and it's about 60% full. I've revolved some videos on it (I had Saw II on there for a bit, right now I have 4 music videos) If I got anything smaller, my music would not fit.

Do you have a Zune or something?
I forgot to get the other quote about the WiFi Safari thing. It's basically like the internet on the psp, I'm guessing, it's free. I'm not sure
I was actually thinking about buying one.
I have a third (I think) generation Ipod, which is about 1/4 inch thick lol.
Right now i have 3.5gigs of music. If i were to get 8 gig, how quickly would it fill up with videos + shit?

Uhhh i have about 3 and a half hours of vid and that's like 850 mb so you can have a ton of video.
I'm probably gonna trade my 5g 30gb for the 80gb for the same price or just save up 50 bucks and get the touch because i doubt i'll use 8 gb really fast.

Wow alot of these posts make me lose faith in humanity. As for responses of "___ GBs IS TOOO MUCH!!!" No its not. In the year I owned my iPod, I filled it completely. I had to delete alot of movies I didn't like. I won't get the Iphone or Itouch because of the low storage. As for the idiot who said "WHO WANTS TO CARREH THEIR MUSIC COLLECTION WITH THEM!!??!" Maybe we don't like switching songs out depending on what we want to listen to.
Who makes it?

Yeah, I guess that was a pretty stupid question. I don't know if I'd want to buy another Apple product, though. The iPod I have now has just had the battery almost completely fail. It won't run a full day without dying.

A 80G iPod 5 Generation is 350$ (I might be wrong)
A 80G iPod Classic is 250$
Some one got screwed...

I already got screwed by Apple last year when I bought a 60 GB for $400 and then a $350 80 GB came out.
Just wait until the newer generation comes out, then buy the old one. I still have my 4 GB iPod Mini.

first off.. hi all 1st post.
I really wonder who didn't know that Iphone was/is an overpriced, overrated piece of junk.
but i still love my Ipod video 60gb(yes half a year later they had the 80gb for alot less cash dammit) offcourse that kind of space is only usefull for the kind of music listener that wants to be able to listen to eacha nd every song he/she owns at anytime of the day. i guess i only listen to about 6 gig of the 32 gig of music i have on it, but sometimes im in the mood for something different. thats kinda why people buy mp3 players with freakishly huge space.
