View Full Version : Favourite Massively Multiplayer Online Games
This thread is for anyone to post their favourite MMO or previous MMO titles they've played, and give a small description on why you liked it so that some of us can find some new and fun online games to play.
Don't turn this into a flame war about what game 'is the best'. Post the reason why you like the game, not if you hate it.
I'll throw in a few to get the ball rolling. Try to read through to see if yours is already posted before throwing in information that's already been said. Though posting why you liked a game that's been said is fine.
Fiesta Online. (http://fiesta.outspark.com/)

Played this game for a couple of months with friends and loved it. Graphics resemble that cutesy anime style in bright coloured 3D models.
Main thing that hooked me to the game were its visuals as well as the constant intances that were held for a short period of time each day. Most consisted of battling through hordes of enemies to reach the final boss and involved usually 15-20 random players who would help work together. Free to play with option to buy cool accesories and items from the site store.
Ragnarok Online (http://www.ragnarokonline.com/)
YNsZmlgU6xk
This game ruined my late highschool years. I was addicted so badly and so were my friends. Visuals involve 2D sprites in a 3D environment, anime themed also (I see a trend here). I really liked how the skills and classes worked. Pretty straight forward and didn't take me long to pick it up. There's hundreds of different english servers out there ranging from all out PVP worlds to crazy player created ones with amazing new content and characters. Free to play with the option of some servers trading donations for interesting items.
Battlefield 2 (http://www.ea.com/official/battlefield/battlefield2/us/)
gUFJDVlxKZw
Technically not an MMO, put the emphasis is highly based on online play (plus the singleplayer was absolute shit and not even worth the time). Gain ranks and new weapons by playing a two sided gunfight with emphasis on capturing strategic points on the map. Each point that's captured becomes a spawn point and the teams defend and attack each other till the other teams tickets reach zero. A little different to the usal run and gun FPS where it takes more than a good aim to defeat your opponent. A skilled commander as well as strong teamwork driven squads can be the difference between a crushing defeat and an overwhelming victory. Battlefield 2's online play is free but needs a legitimate installation from either retail or online stores.
Got an MMO you want heard about? Post away. Include pictures or videos to help if needed.

RTS style game called Shattered Galaxy, gets pretty detailed, depending on where you put stats depends on how much weight your units can hold; what level of technology is available to you; how many units you can have on the battlefield at a time, and how advanced of a unit you can get (tech tree). 3 Factions battling each other for control over zones.
Hell of a lot of fun.
Also this is available for free download Here (http://shatteredgalaxy.com/)

I used to play one called Archlord before I got into WoW, looking back after trying WoW it doesn't seem that great but it was alot of fun and free to play which is always a plus. There were 3 races to choose from but you could attack or be friendly with anyone you chose no matter what your own race. The graphics were pretty awesome as far as I remember, better than WoW for sure, and there was an option to have a guild war in a city, your guild vs another, any member no matter what level could take part and it was the first guild to score a certain number of kills. I'd definitely reccomend it for anybody not willing to pay for an MMO, seems as good as a free one will get.
But yeah, then I got into WoW and just loved it, the world PvP as well as the battlegrounds and arena are great. And I love the massive choice of gear and the talent tree for each class, not sure what other MMOs do it but being able to customize your own character so much is great, and with inscription it just got better. I think the only thing Archlord did better was the guild war idea, something like that in WoW could be great for all the hardcore level 80 guilds.
I used to play runescape, maplestory, and guildwars YEARS ago. I realised I hated MMO's for their generic quests, grinding, and they bored me easily.
Maplestory was a cheesy grind fest with all the quests being fetch quests. The graphics look like a horible anime AND IT WAS 2-D.
Guild Wars was okay, but didn't interest me for long. I could never find a party either. I am keeping my eye out on Guild Wars 2 though.
Runescape was actually the funnest out of all of these. The quests were more creative and had puzzles involved, and you had a ton of stuff to do, but the community was utter shit, Jagex doesn't do good with patches, and the fighting was horrible.
All in all I have yet to find an MMO that will last me for years.

I played Guild Wars a year or two back. It was a decent game. The combat was fun, it was too generic though, one monk to heal, one tank, and a minion master. The necro was really the only original character. I would install it again if I had a computer it would work on.

A couple of us are playing Runes of Magic, it's pretty fun and it has a dual class system.
Anarchy Online is a classic, has a massive amount of content, and is one of the few futuristic MMOs out there. There's only so much you can do with a free account though - apparently it's much faster paced if you subscribe and purchase the expansions.
EVE Online (the starship MMO) has a reputation for being ridiculously boring - and it is, in a sense, as it literally takes days (in real time) to travel to certain places and to increase your skills. But apparently it's awesome if you're playing with friends and not alone, you and your band of buddies zooming around the galaxy and going to war. I haven't tried it yet but I'd like to, some day.
e- I just realized how many MMOs stick online in their names. That's really annoying.

I'd definitely back up these games:
Archlord: Fun, free, and if you work hard you can become the Archlord, which gives the player powers no other player in the game can use. I think you can do strange stuff like change night into day if you wanted. But becoming Archlord isn't easy.
Anarchy Online: Again, free, but if you pay you get more features and extra levels. Wait, I think it's free... did they extend the free users time again? But it's pretty fun, a little outdated though, but I think it's getting another graphics update sooner or later. Fun stuff you can do in this game.
EVE Online is only boring when you first start off, but it gets fun as you make friends and become strong enough to cause massive damage on weak fools. Though it's not for everyone, it's pretty complicated at first and can be pretty hard if you don't know what to do. Should give it at least 3 months on one character to see if you can really get into it.

Can't believe we've had this many responses without mention of Ultima Online. Awesome game, the gameplay was just really unrivaled for me. It could just be that it has a special place in my heart for getting me into MMO's but yeah, it's something I will never forget playing.
The MMO part of Diablo 2 on Battlnet was pretty cool too. It was just a bitch that people would grief you for the fun of it.
My current favourite MMO has to be WoW, although my love for it has wained over the years, it's still the MMO I have played the most/longest and it's managed to get me going back to the shops for a gamecard every couple months for 3 and a half years now so it's doing something right.

I've played tons of mmo's it started with runescape when it was beginning, reached about level 100 on it because I had literally nothing else to do, then I got into guild wars but I found it a real pain in the ass, and then I started playing BF2, ( I saw it mentioned above) and fuck me I loved that game I reached Brigadier General which is the one star rank, I could literally sit on wake island with infantry only for days with the 1st medic unlock gun :D Tried a few more after that, I even dug up Diablo 2 from under my bed and I must say that was fun, stealing other peoples Items when they were sorting their stash out. Then when I started college I got into WoW after playing many shite other MMO's (warrock, Tibia, rappelz, knight, silkroad, 2moons, warcraft private servers, Cabal, ETC) and I must say every other MMO I've tried now just isnt as good. But I quit warcraft after I had my account hacked and decided it was for the best, so I've just recently picked up an mmo called reqieum, and I'm finding it quite enjoyable.

The "twist" in it is that its meant to be part horror... not really, but when it goes dark in the game, nightmares come out and start raping people to death.

Yeah, I've played EVE online, WoW, Maplestory (dear god) and Silkroad Online.
EVE is good, but I'm bored with it right now (again). It could have something to do with no friends playing it and me never actually participating in PVP. I recently resubbed for a month, but the fact that I have to invest a lot of time into it defeats me. I can't just hop on to do something, because doing something would be hella boring (changing skill, travelling 10 systems for a trade).
Silkroad sucked, as did Maplestory. WoW is great but haven't been subbed for ages.
Definitely interested in Runes of Magic and there's one called huxley coming out that looks mad. Or maybe sticking to counterstrike would be best!

Are any of these browser based? Other than runescape anyways.

I know its not "hip" to like it, but I really enjoyed Runescape and I still do as a fun time-killer.
It didn't take much brainpower, the quests were good unlike 99% of all MMO's, and it was browser based and free.
I honestly have not enjoyed any other MMO's and I've tried a lot of free ones.

I'm still waiting on MAG. (Massive Action Game)
Up to like 256 playing at once. It's like a full on war divided up in squads.

My friend's playing that right now and it looks interesting, so I might try it out soon.
For anyone looking for a pure PvP, non grindfest game, Darkfall's looking good. Not out yet (As far as I know), but from what I've seen it looks like it'll be good.

This and everything else you said. Someone said something about the community being awful and they're sort of right but at the same time you run into a lot of people who aren't complete dunces.
I would give WoW a try cause it looks and sounds pretty sweet but I can't be fucked being a noob again and starting from scratch when I'm already pretty good on another MMO.

I've probably tried half a dozen different MMOs. The Realm, Ultmia, EVE, World of Warcraft, etc. Each of them has their ups and downs, but I'm too lazy to talk about all of them, so here's what I think of a couple:
I played Ultima Online a few years ago, I quit right about the time they came out with the 3-D expansion. It was probably my favorite MMO in terms of what the 'world' had to offer. It was incredibly open ended, and to me it seemed much grander in scope than anything else I've ever played (excluding EVE, but EVE doesn't count because I hated that game). My problems came with the clunky combat system, the wilderness being slowly overrun by player houses, and the fact that no one else I know played. Eventually I got bored and quit.
I've also played World of Warcraft. Pretty much everyone and their mom has tried WoW though so no surprise there. It was incredible fun for the first month or so. The combat system was great, everything was streamlined, very immersive. My issues with this game are probably the exact opposite of what I disliked about Ultima. It was so... closed off. The area progression is so linear, traveling from the area where the level 10-20 enemies are, to the 20-30, then to the 30-40 so on and so forth. As you progress, you get special privledges when you reach such and such level... uugh. And then once you complete the scripted leveling experience, it's raid after robotic raid to get high end gear. It's like you're playing a single player game, but there are others to interact with. And then there's the insane, nerdy number crunching to 'maximise' your particular class. This game makes me wish future MMOs would do away with a direct level system. I don't mean to be quite so negative however, it was a great game while the 'honeymoon period' lasted.

I like that you move from area to area, I got bored very quickly staying in one spot. Pretty much everything you said you don't like is what I do like about the game, so eh. The numbers aren't even difficult to work out, you don't need to be a genius. As for 'its like playing a single player game', I would disagree. Depending on who is in your group your experience in raids and heroics will change dramatically, and also, when you're in arenas or pvps, your outcome will depend on the skill of the people you are playing.

Im still in love with rising force online. Not many people play it anymore so its pretty much been invaded by private servers. I know theres much better games but theres something about rfo that still apeals to me.

Wow, that looks awesome. I love the whole experience tree thing with the more experienced dudes as squad leaders and sergeants and stuff while the new players make up the recruits. Plus just the sheer amount of players fuck. Makes me want to get a PS3.

I've never heard of M.A.G. but now I am fucking glad I own a PS3. That shit looks so awesome. Reminds me of Frontlines... and how I WANTED it to be. 256 players, that's either going to be extreme lag or extreme awesome. I want to know more about it.

my favorite mmo is saga. it's a persistant rtsmmo with collectable cards. there's an active player market in the game and, if you are thrifty and patient, you can build an entire army without spending any money on their booster packs. there are cards for this game worth over 60 dollars on the thriving reseller market and cheap yet sometimes useful garbage worth ten cents. you can actually make money playing this game. i love that my hobby is paying for itself. i doubt that'll happen when i move on to the next FPS game which catches my fancy.
this video is an interview with the president and marketing director of the company and i think it explains the game a little bit better than most of the other saga youtube videos. seems like everyone else is just posting youtube vidoes so i'll stick to that. i'm not sure what the policy is here for posting links offsite.

also, if you're thinking about trying it, there is currently an xfire promotion of sizeable proportion. all you have to do is play for 20 hours in the next week i think (or just leave the main login screen up for xfire to log the hours) and you can with tons of prizes. one of these prizes is a real life ballista which i totally want.

is it ok to post links?

I must have wasted at least two years on that game. And I don't regret a minute of it either. The servers I played on had a great community and I met some pretty cool online friends because of it (as nerdy as that may sound.) It was overall just a fun game to play.

DUDE! the 3-1 classes are epic though... Rune knight (the 3-1 of a lord knight) is pretty much a red mage... and i am pretty much in love with the concept of red mages.

I tried a lot of free MMORPGs and some trials on the internet before I bought Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1 and 2 for the Gamecube. I fell in love with the gameplay, it was like an action adventure wrapped up in the RPG genre. Unfortunately you could only play 4 players in the same room, and due to typing with gamecube controllers there wasn't really much of a social aspect to the game, either.
I started up with World of Warcraft in 2005, it had tons of content already then, but it lacked PvP content, and when the arena system was released and the game became less about the two player factions against each other and more about the two player factions against some third NPC faction every expansion pack after the release of the classic game I eventually quit. One thing that quirks me is that the environs you play in are very bland and boring, the NPCs and many of the items are quite obnoxious references to different pop-cultures.
At the moment I am stuck at Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, which is paradise for PvP enthusiasts. In particular I am very fond of the unique and interesting mechanics of the different player careers in the game. The graphics aims more for realism and less for the cartoon style of a few other MMORPGs I've tried, namely PSO and WoW. The environment the game is set in also really enhances the game experience. It's definitely Europe in the late middle age.
I recommend trying WoW and WAR if MMORPGs tickle your fancy, and maybe the sequel to PSO, Phantasy Star Universe.
