View Full Version : New short!

Rob

Another quick two day short this time. Dave and Chase have another one on the way, which looks like it'll be out sometime early next week.

Check it out!! (http://www.explosm.net/movies/149/)

I got the idea Monday and figured it was worth an all nighter or two to finish (I'm posting this at 6 in the morning and ready to crash)

Hope you people get at least a slight chortle out of it.

What. Not sugar coating this, but i didn't think it was all that fantastic. Why would the guy looking to the left cause him to fall off a treadmill. I didn't laugh.

Also, to everyone below me, fuck off, whats wrong with constructive critisism?

Here's a bit of constructive criticism, you spelt constructive wrong. Also the guy fell of the treadmill because he was running really fast and if you turn sideways when you are running really fast you can fall over, especially on a treadmill, also he was distracted from running. You probably don't understand because you have never run anywhere in your life. Especially not on a treadmill. Also you are a plank.

Why would the guy looking to the left cause him to fall off a treadmill.

I'm curious, is Charlie the only one who saw it this way? I was hoping it'd be obvious that he looks over after the guy falls, not causes him to fall via telekinesis or whatever.

Does it really look that way? I can probably change the timing or something if it's confusing.

I see what you were going for. The guy fell because he was startled. Then in his confusion he looked towards the source of the distraction. Falling and looking simultaneously.

Oofie
04-01-2009, 9:53 AM
He means why would looking towards the fat guy cause treadmill guy to fall, nothing to do with the guy on the left looking at him.

e: I think

I could change it if I wanted to though. I've changed it twice since this morning to fix small things. That's the beauty of Flash animation!

I think the fact that everything happens simultaneously is what might make people think that the guy to the left is causing the guy on the right to fall since the guy on the left looking at the stair pro guy can shift your focus.

Sorry to get in the way of crucifying Charlie and tonguing Rob's asshole. Do go on.

Could have been funnier I think, something hilarious should have happened to the guy that shouted "I did it".

I was also a bit confused as to why someone shouting "I did it" would make someone else fall over while running on a treadmill, but that bit was funny so I guess comedy > realism.

Next time you're on a treadmill ramp the speed to 20 then look and turn sideways.

Oh, and if you do please videotape it and post it here.

Also registered just to post this.

Before I watched: "Oh fuck, why do comics do this? Remember when Garfield or Dilbert had cartoons? Never put human voices to comics, it ruins everything. God damnit." (translated: "At first I was like")

After I watched: (wiping drool from my desk having laughed uncontrollably with my mouth hanging open) (translated: "then I lol'd")

Good jorb.

Buddy13
04-01-2009, 6:03 PM
I registered just to say how awesome that was. And anyone who didn't get the treadmill guy wasn't paying attention. Granted, I wasn't paying very much attention to him the first time through. I was focused on stairmaster guy, but the second he screamed "I did it!" and the treadmill guy flew off, I got what happened. Then I watched it again, and his reaction is funnier, because you can actually see him look, then stumble, then mutter "son of a..." as he falls and flies off. And then stairmaster guy looks over.

[edit]: I'm editing just to say how I'm not going to edit that HTML that didn't work.

As always, nice animating. It was funny, cute funny but not gratuitous violence funny which is more sexy. i thought you could have made the guy falling of the treadmill crack his skull or been sucked underneath, outlining the grave dangers associated with treadmills.

"Spelt" is a valid word. It is an alternate spelling of the word "spelled," and either can be used, whatever the circumstances. Just because the computer does not recognize it does not mean it's not real. Most computers/computer programs are not perfect in grammar or spelling.

Today I invented a machine that converts the ideas in your brain to digital comics in .png format using electrodes and advanced quantum physics. The only drawback is that it removes a few brain cells and also your soul.

The Stairs flipping up was really well done (little bit curious how you did it), and everything constructed in 3d looked nice, overall the pacing was good. I do agree with the End Punchline feeling a bit weird. I would have him startled, and start to stumble from it then fall (all happening really quickly). To build some anticipation to his fall.

Probably shape tweening and masking but I could be wrong. Rob's been doing sweet psuedo-3D stuff like that in flash since way back when.

Yeah, pseudo 3D is the best way to put it.

The middle three steps are motion tweened in a loop, the top and bottom steps are shape tweened to create the wrap around effect. I'm a cheap animator so I pretty much just made sure the first frame and last frame of the loop were identical and then tweened my ass off until the in-between made sense.

Reversing the direction was kind of a drag though.

White_Ninja
04-04-2009, 1:23 AM
The main reason I found this so funny was because I recently started going to the gym and work the stair master machine. That damn thing is irritating because you can never get to the top no matter how hard you try. The faster you step, the faster the machine goes... so to actually have someone get to the top is quite amazing! I would have yelled the same thing, and I would have probably made someone fall off their machine as well =D
