View Full Version : Assassin's Creed 2
Well it was officially announced a little while ago that Assassin's Creed 2 is making its way onto our consoles. Not that we didn't get the hint from both the ending of Assassin's Creed 1 or the teaser trailer popping up recently.
Not a whole load can be gathered from the video, but IGN made it their mission to unravel some of the clues hidden within it. Some obvious, some not so obvious.
lKy04PQ4hfM
They then followed up with something a little more informative:
US, April 15, 2009 - This month's issue of Game Informer sports a rather dramatic pose by the new leading man of Assassin's Creed II, Ezio Auditore de Firenze, but it's what's inside that's truly interesting. Having listened to the cries of needless repetition besmirching what was an otherwise rather impressive debut for a new IP (it's apparently the fastest-growing new gaming franchise in history), Ubisoft is adding quite a bit more depth to the Renaissance Italy-based sequel.
The ample amount of historical documentation about the smattering of city-states, infighting merchant families and the corrupt religious figures of the time make for plenty of ties to real-life events, but perhaps none are as promising as the inclusion of Leonardo da Vinci and all his wonderful toys (Game Informer likens him to Bond's gadget buddy Q). Among many of da Vinci's inventions that will feature in the game is his legendary flying machine, which is perhaps more of a glider than anything else, as he'll be kept aloft with warm air currents rising off Ezio's allies during a particular mission.
With Venice's network of aquatic channels (yep, there's swimming now) and densely-packed buildings, Ezio's ability to ditch enemies has naturally been magnified, and to help balance that out, Ubisoft has bumped up the types of enemy units, which will grow more aggressive and skilled as the game goes on, including being able to tail you with the same now-infamous parkour moves from the first game. Other enemies will be advanced melee attackers or will poke into hiding spots (which have likewise increased in variety).
The increase in variety hasn't just been restricted to the cities and waterways, though; outside the cities, Ubisoft is populating the countryside with more to do, including the ability to string together missions that will take you from Venice to Florence and the more rural areas in between, tied together with a stronger narrative thread. Promises of missions being stacked back-to-back -- about 200 in all -- abound, as do mentions of the different types of missions one can undertake. Because Ubisoft Montreal is being careful to mix things up, they're also claiming that the side missions can essentially be taken on in any order, and stretching from the city into the countryside and back.
With all the changes to the scenery and main character (Ezio is a far more affluent and cultured protagonist than Altair was in the first game), it's not really terribly surprising that Ubisoft Montreal also amped up the combat. Weapons can now be ripped from an enemy and used against them, but Ezio doesn't carry a sword with him at all times, meaning improvisation and getting the drop on enemies is more important this time around. To assist in this, he can fight bare-handed if need be, stripping enemies of their weapons or simply opting to whittle down their numbers and make a break for it.
All this fighting will lead to Ezio becoming rather notorious in whatever city he's causing a ruckus, and though he can make a break for it (with white sheets indicating key routes of traversal), it's smarter to just undertake missions to lower his notoriety, which will drive down the presence of suspicious guards (though Ezio can now blend in with any crowd rather than just monks if the situation calls for it). Tearing down posters, taking out witnesses or paying them off were all mentioned as viable ways to keep the heat off you .
The full feature is on stands now, and is rather loaded with new tidbits. It's set to be seen sometime near the end of this year and will be released apparently on Xbox360, PlayStation 3, PC as well as Nintendo Wii (which I'm slightly skeptical about).
Anyone else who finished the first game will agree that some questions need some answers and hopefully Assassin's Creed 2 will give us just that, if not a small insight into what the hell is going on.
I recently went through and played it again for kicks (and for some achievements) and found myself getting hyped up again for the sequel. A lot of people had their own interpretations with the images and writings left on the walls of Abstergo in the first game and some have some good evidence to back it up. There's a blog here (SPOILERS) (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=175552)that helps explain some of the confusion most had at the ending of the first game.
Anyone else excited for this game? Only gripes I had with the first was how little reward you got from doing the extra mission informants. Fair enough it gave you some clues in how to go about a successful assassination, but not enough considering the running around you had to do (fucking drunks pushing me into alert guards :argh:).
Apart from that, I enjoyed almost every moment of it (side from some frustrating 20 on 1 battles) and hope they only add to the great game play they started with.
Also check out this little picture of our new leading man, Ezio:

Boy, he'll sure blend in with the crowd.
I'm psyched for this game, what I want are some trailers of people being stabbed in the face. I always thought that Altair couldn't swim because his weapons weighed him down. I'm also interested in how they'll work in the firearms that were mentioned in the trailer.
Also, wings?

This game looks to be cool. I loved Assassin's Creed, and this game looks just as great with some cool extra features. I'm a little bit confused about the Wii release too, though, I bet it'll be something like Force Unleashed on the Wii, not as big a game as it will be on the other consoles.
Ezio's costume cooler than Altair's.

I really hope Ubisoft doesn't try to make Ezio do unnessicary flips (starwars-esk) with those wrist shanks... But I'm definately buying that when it comes out.
This makes me want to buy a used copy of the first one and play it through. I havent even played it and Im getting excited for this. Fuckk.

Know what would be awesome in this? Multiplayer. An every-man-for-himself CTF mode, or a race mode or something. Running through the cities and across rooftops, avoiding guards, etc.

I was thinking the exact same thing the other day while I was doing an assassination. It would be cool to do like a race to kill the target first type thing. Or kill as many guards/targets within a time limit.
A parkour race would be fucking cool as well.
They said that the new lead character will be a lot more refined in personality than Altair's arrogant one. I hope he's not some snobby bastard.
The wings thing I'm really curious about. One of my theories was that maybe DaVinci will play a role as an ally; therefore aiding you with new gadgets and weapons as you progress. I haven't put a whole load of thought into that one though so don't attack me for it.

It should be really cheap now a days. Definitely grab it if you can. You'll probably get a bit of a shock if you haven't read anything about it or seen anything from it before you play it.

You think those annoying beggars will return? I fucking hated them.
"Have you got any money? I'm poor and sick and hungry!"
If I ever played that game now (heh, unlikely. Got all the points and there's no replay value) I'd just knife them all. Sod the guards, they're easy prey too.
I had fun getting that 'Enemy of the poor' achievement, tossing beggars into merchant stands and off walls.
Those damn lunatics and drunks were more annoying. I've had a few times I've failed an almost perfect assassination because one of them pushes me into a guard and sends everyone bat shit crazy.

I loved the first one, because of the cinematic esque fighting. I could anger off 20 guards and fight them all all day long. :hmm:
I actually got sick of fighting guards like that. I hope they add a more 'Prince of Persia' style fighting with more acrobatics and flair considering you know they have the talent, they're freakin' assassins.
Though since Ezio doesn't carry a sword like Altair did and will be disarming guards of their own to use, I can see some more interesting fights. Looking forward to these so called guards that can mimic your acrobatic rooftop skills.

I liked the old costume because it was realitvely simple (http://loot-ninja.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/assassins-creed.jpg). They just took the old design and made all kinds of intricate details so it doesn't have the same appeal to me. Like someone else said, it's going to be much harder to blend into the crowd.
Well apparently your able to blend into almost any crowd according to the article. Maybe different costumes or something is available, no idea. It kind of looks like he has a cloak over one shoulder so maybe that will cover you.

That was thrown out of the window since the beginning. You could kill anyone in front of a big crowd if guards weren't directly there as long as you pray walked along the crowd running away in fear.

I really hope that they let you have a gun. I found the lack of ranged weapons kind of annoying in the first game. I mean, you had throwing knives, but if you had a crossbow(WHICH WAS IN THE GODDAMNED TRAILER) then the whole thing could have been set up better. Instead of every enemy going down to a face-stab(which is cool the first couple of times, but boring afterwards), there could have been more variety. Like in the trailer, when he shoots someone with a crossbow at close range and then falls back on the face-stabbing. Plus, killing someone with a loud, hearty boom is more satisfying than shanking them in the back. And shooting them in the head comes with the added bonus of making sure that they can't talk for ten minutes afterward.

It's the first part of a trilogy, of course it was going to end that way. Plus you do get free play. Just sit in the animus and you can play any memory again. And if you mean't just run around and shit then you just choose the second last memory where you have all your equipment and go nuts.
And shooting them in the head comes with the added bonus of making sure that they can't talk for ten minutes afterward.

I found that pretty funny. Especially in one of them where you go to assassinate that Templar Knight dude and it turns out to be a chick but you let her go. I just stabbed the bitch in the neck, how the fuck did she just walk away?
Also Prof, they said there's like 200 side missions this time but hopefully they listened to people's comments and made them different and interesting.

He will probably stand out in a crowd, but no one will call him on it. If I were an Italian peasant, the last thing I'd want to do would be to anger the scary man who gives out hugs which make people fall down.
Looking a bit ahead here but remember the whole 'bleeding' condition that Desmond contracted at the end of the first game that allowed you to use eagle vision? I'm hoping that by the third or maybe briefly in the second that you get to play in the future as a present day assassin with skills that 'bleed' over.
Also anyone else think that maybe you play as a previous test subject to Desmond? Maybe Subject 16 (the one that flipped the fuck out and wrote all those clues in blood on the walls in Abstergo)? I'm psyched to find out.

But dead ass, as awesome as the last game was, it was repetitive, I hope this one allows for a bit more than your basic "find a flag, kill a guy, kill another guy, run away, use the same weapons, use the same combos, congratulations you just beat the game after 24 of the same shit over and over again"
Once again, don't get me wrong, game was bad ass...

I'm thinking there will be alot more focus on stealth and less focus on blending in the time around, because the protagonist doesn't look anything like anyone else.

I'm really keen to see if you get to sneak around and explore Abstergo a lot more. Those parts really had me wanting to play more and figure out all the clues and trying to find out whats really going on. I like the whole conspiracy things in games and this one had me hooked.

I would be all for it. When I figured out that they would be doing 3 games I kind of assumed that they would gradually get more modern. Granted a leap from 2 to a modern 3 would not be as gradual but I would so play that shit. I figured the Animus would help Desmond tap into his inner assassin and be a bad ass! There's actually been some rumors the the third game might be set around/in World War II but I'm really not sure how that would fit in with the rest of the games. I'm treating this as a major rumor right now.

Usually. But I'm trading in Skate 2, which I could care less about, and L4D. I payed 20$ for Left 4 Dead, and I got Skate 2 for Christmas with my XBox last year. So I'll pay 20 for L4D, and 20 for the game. Still saving $20 on Assassin's Creed II. Worth it enough for me, I suppose.

So true. That's probably the reason that I've kept any of the PS2 games that I have the slightest bit of interest in replaying. It's not worth giving up some old favorite games of mine for 2 dollars a piece. I'd rather keep them, if only for nostalgia's sake. Any of the other ones I traded in and got a good chunk of money for. Not surprising considering I turned in 25+ games, but still. I remember the guy at the counter telling me for a few games that I was getting 25 cents or less. Slap a sticker on it and sell it for 12x the price it was before! I suppose it's more of a loss with newer titles being traded in, though.

If you have a large amount of games to sell that you know you'll never play again it's ok. My brother and I did this once and ended up getting about $120. I would never trade in a 360 game though.
I still don't have much faith in this game though, to tell the truth. I have a feeling they'll have added a lot more things but you'll end up doing them all 1,000 times again.

I trust Ubisoft. I loved Assassins Creed and I think they will do a great job on this one. The repetition in the first game got old, but Ubisoft has promised all of that to be gone. I think that with all the new content and playstyles they offer, lots of the same thing (asssassinations, etc.) may play out differently. I certainly hope so, anyway.
My favorite quote from Gamestop:
"Honestly dude, keep the game. Use it as a coaster. The trade in value is roughly 14 cents. It's bullshit, but you're better off using the game for something other than this."

Unless you abosolutely hated a game and never plan on ever playing it again, or are getting the games from other people like the other guy it's really not worth it at all. I can't remember what game it was but I remember the list of games they would approve for this deal was ridiculous. It think it might have been Resident Evil 5, which released in March, and they were asking for games like Left 4 Dead and Call of Duty: WaW which both released in November.

You might find it worth it for a few games. There are some that are a year+ old. Uncharted is under the PS3 category. That's gotta be a few years old by now. It's only worth it for me because I have Left 4 Dead for PC and I know I'm done with Skate 2. You might be kinda surprised. It's a damn big list of PS3, 360, and Wii games.

Some of them aren't too bad. I think the oldest game on that list is MW or Saints Row 2.
But some of them are fucking ridiculous. Guitar Hero 5?! Didn't that come out a month ago? And Lips with 2 fucking wireless mics? Wouldn't that alone be worth at least $60?
If I see anyone trading in stuff like this I think I'll slap them.

With a 6 foot dildo tbh. Unless you really are retarded trading in those games makes no sense unless they are laying around as dead weight. Think they'd take my MW1 it has circular scratches from when my xbox ate it, only map you can't play is that boat fragfest one.

Though you probably could add in online capabilities similar to how they did with the Challenges in Arkham Asylum. Like, kill the target in the fastest amount of time with the least amount of people noticing.

I'm pretty sure the game won't have any multiplayer. I have yet to see anything about it and the game is coming out fairly soon. I think they got rid of it so they could really focus on single player which is a really smart move.

Based on the actual gameplay in the video I would say this game is 9.0+ material. The original was an amazing game that was stopped short by some bad design decisions. This one looks to have addressed nearly all of them and looks like a definite buy for most people.

No, it wasn't. The replaying of the same 6 quests over and over again was boring and tedious. The actual assassining and story were great.

It only cost $80, so about $20 more and it comes with an extra disc filled with behind the scenes stuff, the soundtrack and a bit more that I haven't really looked at too deeply, and art book and, the coolest thing in my opinion and why I chose it, an 8.5" statue of Ezio.
Can someone answer me this. did they fix the repetitiveness at all?

Yes, they did. Some of the missions are the same, like eavesdropping, but the first time I did it it took me through catacombs underground and figuring out a whole bunch of puzzles to get to them and then it was an actual cutscene for the eavesdrop. Quite better then the first one.
And assassination isn't hard, just the double assassination is kicking my ass. That and the hiding spot assassination. And I found one thing that bugs me so far, no ability to crouch down.

Well, just beat it and I see a lot of people getting pissed at the ending but I liked it, can't wait for AC3.
I think a lot of people are interested in what happens at the end and they don't really want to play the whole thing so basically...
Your main rival becomes the pope near the end of the game to get closer to a piece of eden (which is the popes scepter) and a place called "The Vault" that is hidden inside the Vatican. Ezio then uses his piece of eden (an apple) to fight him and eventually kick his ass but not kill him. Combining the two pieces of eden makes the vault door open which leads to this room with some god-like creatures that explain the world will end if Desmond does not find all these sanctuarys built all around the world (Hints to 2012). The big WTF moment is that the god-like creature is talking to Ezio but mentions Desmond must save the world. Desmond is then released from the animus with all of Ezios abilitys, kills some templars, but the main scientist from the first game escapes then boom black screen and credits. Hope I explained nicely.

Just played a bit at my friend's house. Not that impressed.
Pros:
Nice graphics, pretty fluid controls, combat is pretty fun. Nice contrast between Ezio and Altaiir or whatever. Also, stabbing two dudes in the face at the same time is awesome.
Cons: "Pretty" fluid controls. If you don't push the stick at just the right angle, Ezio hurtles off of a six story brothel into the streets below, arm outstretched, hoping maybe, just maybe, he can grab a windowsill. The combat is fun for awhile, but "wait for bad guy to raise sword above his head then press x really fast" gets old faster than you can shove your thumb up your ass and fart. Also, fucking minstrels are almost more annoying than those fucking beggars in the last game.

Try playing around more with the combat, SourChicken. Disarming is really fun, as is just going batshit on enemies and whaling on them. You don't have to use counters at all -- personally, I make a game of it. I do a lot of running up walls and disarming and sudden hidden blading.
I always loved the first one, it was so epic with all the tactical thinking and ESPECIALLY the timing of the counter's. But boo that I don't have a good enough computer to even play it. ): Friends and their computers. :)

So I'm just taking my time with the Creed and I can say that so far, the game is excellent. The tasks given to you to accomplish in the game aren't too repetitive as they usually have a different back story and part of the city to enter. What's happened from the movement of the first game to the second game is improvement really. The things found in the first game have gotten better and more varied, save for Viewpoints. Sometimes climbing towers is fun, but when you do it 66 times? Otherwise, all the new weapons and armor are great along with the bad ass combat.
I'm loving it.

I've been playing this game for the past few days, since Friday. When compared to the first game, it's such a massive improvement and it actually really makes you realize how repetitive it was. The game no longer follows the formula of "Do X amount of menial tasks and learn information that's usually out of context if you missed one cutscene. Then assassinate some guy for reasons that you forgot why."
Another thing I love is that they added instanced parts of the game. Meaning that certain missions put you in areas (Like the example above, in catacombs, or infiltrating a mansion) just for that mission. This makes the open-worldness not feel lazy, but still be present.
The combat can be done plenty of different ways, and there are new enemy types besides just Archer, Swordsman, Templar. The gameplay is much more satisfying than the first. I'm still finding new ways to kill people.
I'm also going for 100% completion and not just to say that I have. I really feel motivated to. The story is present in almost everything you do. This is probably my favorite part because I love to feel like I'm doing things for a reason.
The RPG elements include things like upgrading armor, financial investments, buying weapons, repairing armor, dying clothes, etc. The game's number of weapons is much higher than AC1.
tl;dr - Holy fuck, buy this game.

I say it depends on what you wanna do. If you just want to beat the game and that is it, then rent it. But, if you going to go for 100% completion then you want to buy the game.
Great game by the way, can not wait till the next one. My favorite way to kill two guards would have to be to poison one and watch him kill the other one or the double air assassination.

Well, they kind of did, it was like a synthetic skin suit. I dunno, they were a slave race used by the ones who came before anyway, created in their image. Only a handful of them took pity and thats where the Gods came from, like Jupiter/Zeus. The ending really means that shit is literally gonna get real.

It is there to show how the heritage moved from The Holy Land to Italy, and explained in greater detail in AC : Bloodlines
And the people who came before are what it says. They are "people" who came before humanity, they created us in there image, ergo they are what we could call our gods. Adam and Eve stole the Apple of Eden, which holds great power. They were able to escape and started humanity as we know it.
