Trophies on the PS3 and Achievement points on the Xbox 360 seem to be an industry standard now a days. I see a lot of different opinions on this. I would like to see what Explosm's gamers think of this.

Personally, I'm not an achievement whore. I do own an Xbox 360 but mostly play 360 exclusives, Xbox games and various arcade classics. I am however a trophy whore. All of my multiplatform games are for the PS3 and trophies inspire me to play the crap out of the games. I know they don't do anything outside of just being there for the fuck of it but you'll know that you've completely conquered the game when you earn that Platinum - and it's a real good feeling.

Hi, I'm BreakTheWalls and I'm an achievement whore.

The first time I played Gears of War and got my first achievement, there was no going back. If a game, brilliant or not, didn't have achievements/trophies in them, they weren't worth my time (or at least not top priority). It's a perfect reward system that recognises your amazing in-game feats. It motivates me to buy more games and to play them more extensively, when otherwise I'd just get bored and then completely forget about it.

Achievements reignited my love for gaming.

In WoW I'm a bit of an achievement whore. (http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-achievements.xml?r=Agamaggan&cn=Quadros&gn=OrdaBoia+killing+Barbies) I could do better.

A friend of mine is more of a Trophy whore than I am. He buys the little ten dollars games just to get the trophies and bump up his level. However I have recently been collecting a bunch of them on inFamous to try and get the platinum for that game.

I rented Terminator because I heard the trophies are ridiculously easy to get and Platinum is a cakewalk. :D

I'm close to platinum in Dead Space. Just gotta beat the game on impossible difficulty using only the plasma cutter. Nightmare and a half...

What I do is complete the game then decide if I'm gonna get the achievements based on two factors, whether I liked the game enough, and what kind of achievements they are. If they're stupid online ones and it's an old game with dead online then I won't bother but if they're nice little challenging ones then yeah I'll go for them.

WoW has achievements, what do they do?

The more difficult ones get you exclusive mounts and pets and shit, non combat stuff but it looks well cool. Also titles to compliment your name but they're well tough to get. I'm currently 'Quadros, Champion of the Frozen Wastes'.

I have a PS3 and a 360 and I'm not much of an achievement whore but I do enjoy them. They can bring a new challenge to a game especially when it's over. I never go out to buy a game just for the achievements though.

Are the Titles you get unlocked from Instances only (I guess Champion of the Frozen Wastes is from the hardest instance in Northrend?) or do they have some for like having mined 10 000 times, made 500 potions, traveled 200 miles on a Mount, killing 10 000 of some type of enemy?

I'm an achievement whore on 360. It gives me another goal than actually beat the game, and some achievements offer a nice challenge. I sometimes pick back up a game I didn't play for months just because I have 150-200~ points, and tell myself I should get more.

Variety of titles from a variety of sources. 'Ambassador' (get all horde/alliance faction reputations to exalted) 'Explorer' (travel to every section of every area to reveal all the grey areas on the full detailed world map), 'Seeker' (complete 3000 Quests) come from world achievements. Champion is from defeating every northrend boss, as are 'the undying' (complete naxx without anyone dying even once) and 'of the nightfall' (complete Obsidian Sanctum in the hardest circumstances, leaving all of the boss's body guard dragons alive when you attack him instead of killing them first) come from raid instances. And every festival gives a title if you complete all the festival achievements and quests.

I would have to say I am a trophy whore... Im so close to my first platnium in Uncharted: Drakes Fortune I just need to beat the game on Crushing difficulty... But the trophies do motivate me to play the game more in-depth than I did before the PS3 got the trophy patch... On 360 the only game I played is Mass Effect and I got all the trophies for that and I must say it was a good feeling.

I think I'm bordering the two. I don't buy shitty games just to get the achievements out of them, but when I do get a game, I try to go for every single achievement in the game. I think it adds more replay value to the game (unless the achievements are outrageous, in which I say fuck it and put the game away forever).

From what I have heard its easy as hell to get platnium in the Terminator:Salvation game... I heard on one playthrough you can get everything except for the Hard trophy... That is a game I might get when it comes down in price... I love easy trophies

12 trophies total:
9 Gold trophies - 1 per chapter (GOLD !!!)
1 Gold trophy - beating it on Medium
1 Gold trophy - beating it on Hard
1 Platinum trophy - getting all trophies

The fact that the campaign is only 3 hours long makes it a cakewalk. You can get platinum with a 1-2 day rent so don't even buy it.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm a whore about achievements, but I certainly work a little to get them for the most part. Though Prince of Persia has it the easiest of what I've got, I'm about a quarter through it and I've got about 20 achievements so far with very little going out of my way to get them. You get one for starting the game.

I love getting achievements, but I only like it when they are reasonable. Ridiculous ones and it just seems pointless. However, they make you do things you normally wouldn't do.

Also, I know for a fact that some games give out Gamerpics when you get certain score.

I love getting achievements. I could give a shit about the "gamerscore" or whatever, but I always try and get achievements. I seem to only care about getting them for games I really like, for instance I have like 98% for Skate 2, all but 4 or 5 for Left4Dead, and 90% for Call of Duty 4, while I only have 2 or 3 for Assassins Creed etc..

I always thought it was a really good idea to implement achievements for games, it really gives you something to do after you beat the game.

I tend to go for ones in WoW that will earn me shit, i've put in a good few hours grinding shit for titles to make me stand out (and a pirate hat), but anything that takes too much effort I generally won't go for unless I want to put in the effort for something else too. There's other players in my guild who are after literally everything out there, one of my priests put in hours just running and flying around to get his 'Explorer' title. Quaddy's Frozen Wastes title on the other hand is something me and my guild are aiming for as a raid guild anyway and i'm close to that. I think I prefer getting WoW achievments over 360 ones as well, the flash of light and cool sound is a lot better than the small pop on my 360. Unless i'm going for some veteran/insane thing just to prove I can, then I love it when it comes up.

I sometimes try and go for achievements but sometimes they're not that big a deal to me. I wouldn't go rent a crap game and waste a few hours just so I can increase my gamerscore. I usually do it if it's a really fun game and the achievements are fairly challenging to make it seem worthwhile and give it some replay value.

Petey2112
05-31-2009, 11:08 PM
I wouldn't say I'm an achievement WHORE, maybe more of a slut. I'll buy a game if it looks fun, regardless of what the achievements are. Once I have that game and beat it, then I'll go get every achievement I can get. I love getting them, but would never go buy games just to improve my gamerscore.

Right now I'm getting the last few I haven't gotten on Bioshock. It's so much easier to enjoy Rapture without having to worry about a storyline.

I'd be willing to get a mediocre game (rated 5-6 out of 10) if the price is right and it has trophies.

Smokeyy90
06-02-2009, 3:46 PM
If I got a game that was rated a 5-6/10 the trophies would have to be very simple to get. Kind of like Terminator. Still need to rent that to feed my trophy addiction! Course inFamous is keeping my trophy hunger at bay.

I once had this guy on my team, in halo 3, SCREAMING BLOODY HELL because no one on the team gave two shits about his wanting to get some achievement (i think it may have been 3 grenade kills in a row or something). And I sat there seriously thinking to myself, does this REALLY matter that much to people? Is this all there is to life???

I think it's absolutely retarded to obsess over a virtual accomplishment like it makes an impact on your real life, and the people around you. Do these people actually believe that achievements will improve their social status?

99% of the time I get an achievement, and have to go back and look it up, because I just didn't care enough to notice nor attempted to unlock it in the first place.

I guess it's cool to seek to unlock them in a game to receive some cool benefits/weapons/whatever but don't make a life out of it.

Same here, I don't purposally replay a game to gain trophies, I don't go around getting trophies to start with either. To me it doesn't really add an extra element to the game. If the game can't satisfy me from it's levels, characters etc. then it's not a very good game, I'm not about to get a game based on trophies.

But I would definately be more inclined to get trophies if I gained something from it like weapons etc

Can one of the PS3 guys answer me this:

Does Home give you a trophy room where they hold all your Trophies? I remember seeing it as part of the Home preview a while back and just wanted to know if they actually have it in there now. Wouldn't that be cool to show off to your e-friends?

Plus, is there the Star Wars style hall of all the potential trophies?

I guess if you truly believe something that doesn't really exist that they are looking at on the TV screen will impress them, then I guess it would be cool to show off to your e-friends. I know what would be cool, write a program to create a trophy room for your PS3, then I'll be impressed.

Now I have both a 360 and a Ps3. I completely whore achievements on the 360, and yes, I do buy crappy games simply for achievements, but alot of the time I enjoy playing the crappy games, that I would have other wise never have experienced. On the other hand; I'm quite a fan of The Watchmen comic and movie, but I won't buy the arcade game simply because it's gamerscore comes in 3G/6G/7G ect. This would break my perfect "Divisible by 5" Total Gamerscore. So I find Gamerscore both a blessing and a curse. Most of the time tempting me to atleast try playing the game on a harder difficulty, even after I've completed it. This can even double the amount of time I spend on a particular game!
However, when theres a game that I'm really excited about, and really want to immerse myself in the plot and atmosphere I will buy it on Ps3, because I couldn't give a crap about trophies in the slightest, therefore I'm not playing through the game thinking "If I replay that part of the level, I can try to get the Kill 6 Enemies with one attack achievement", which overall helps me enjoy the game more.

First of all, NICE gamerscore.

I'm a bit confused here though. Why would you choose the PS3 version over the 360 if you're highly excited over the game? As far as I know, there shouldn't be any difference between most multiplatform games.

Okay, that makes sense. When I'm in that kind of situation, I just refrain from looking at the list of trophies I need to unlock, at least until I finish my first playthrough. That's what I did with Dead Space. After I finished the game, I went back and whored the shit out of it until I got the Platinum.
