4th Explosm Comic Tournament '09

O.K. So a few people have said they would be interested in having another tournament.

Submissions now closed.
Threads for battling will follow shortly after.

Please read the following

Additional Updates on the rules since the last tounament.
No Entering other competitors characters into your comics, battle royale-esque. I know your game.
ALSO, there will be no commenting on battles until the vote thread. Commenting on the battle halfwaythrough is akin to jumping in the ring in the middle of a boxing match to tell one of the boxers there last punch could have been better aimed. It just wouldn't happen.

Post your characters in this thread. What they look like and a brief description of their powers, personality. They must be your own creation. All entries will be considered and the only way you're not going to be able to participate is if the character is unoriginal or we can tell you just didn't try. A stick man ain't gonna cut it.

Entries will be open for awhile. Once we get quite a few I'll post a definite deadline. Plenty of time to get your characters in. Once entry is closed no other submissions will be accepted.

When the tournament starts you will have 2 days to launch your attack. Once your opponent strikes you will have 2 days to ready a counter attack. Each participant will get 2 chances to fight in each battle. Therefore the fights will go like this.

Fight starts
Player 1 attacks within 2 days time
Player 2 attacks within 2 days time
Player 1 attacks within 2 days time
Player 2 attacks within 2 days time
Fight ends

If the person reserves to go first and does not attack within the 2 days the other contestant has an additional 2 days to attack. If neither attack, both are out. If the second gets his attack in then they win by default.

If neither reserves and there is no peep from either contestant after the 2 days are up then they are both out.

Attacks can take as many frames as needed just be sure to have it completed within the time allotted.

Outcome will be determined by a vote at the end of the the fight in a thread made by either myself or Relaps.

Pairings will be done out of a hat style every round with who ever remains.

[RELAPS NOTES]: The Comic Judging should be based on three things:

1. Art: Is it decent? Pleasing to the eye? Terrible?
2. Creativity: Cool situations, interesting ways of handling the fights?
3. Funny: This is a COMIC competiton. It should be funny, but NOT random. Don't make the Flowerpot monster from Arubalanda appear out of your character's pants.

There you have it, the 33.3%'s of judging. Take ALL of these into account. Just because someone can draw well, if their comic is boring, then this whole contest will be a bore, albeit a pretty one. The same thing goes for if it's a crappy looking, hilarious comic. You shouldn't make a comic win on art alone, but it's still 1/3'd of the judging, so don't ignore it either.

Another thing for contestants: Treat your opponents character with respect. If it's a tennis player that fires flaming tennis balls, don't make him a retard in your comic round. Don't have him shitting himself because he's braindead.

NO INSTANT DEATH MOVES: You cannot *kill* opponents. You can kill your own guy, then make him come back to life via the Deus Ex Washing Machina.

IMPORTANT
If you have a big school project coming up, your family members are perpetually and deathly ill or you think you're going to lose interest PLEASE do not sign up and waste our time.

Happy the Clown!

Happy was a talentless man, and spent most of his youth playing video games and doing shit all with his life. When he was kicked out of his parents house, he thought a part time job as a clown would make him some pocket money. 30 years later, Happy hates his life and everyone around him. His goals in life are to drink endless amounts of cheap whiskey and make everyone as miserable as he is.
Luckily, Happy has various clowning and party tricks which can help him fight or get out of a sticky situation. This is one clown who does not clown around.

Except when he's being a clown. Which is most of the time.


PS: He's mostly red blue and green because I discovered I don't have many colouring pencils. I'd better buy some.

Meet Chris "The Steroid Abuser" Storm. Real name Christopher Shannahan, Storm wanted to be a wrestler since he was a kid seeing Bulk Bogan and The Ultimate Whoreier square off for the first time. Since then he has been saying his prayers, drinking his milk and taking a healthy dose of steroids every day to amass his gargantuan frame, at the expense of his poor penis. That, and his moobs gain another cup size every other year. Plus, he is very incredibly orange after tanning so much.

As well as frequent steroid usage, Chris also uses a ton of painkillers as he is always up against the likes of The Big Slow, Gay Pissqueery-hoe and Cripple H night after night. Like Butt-taster, he is able to win world titles, even when frequently injured, because he has political stroke backstage and is banging the boss's daughter/son/wife/himself.

After 10 minutes of rest holds and commercial breaks, Storm finishes off his opponents with a devastating Cocksuck Canyon Slam (or a pedigree but more gayer).

Try smiling so hard that your neck muscles raise up. That was the look I was trying to draw. That he's so jacked up to the gills his body could explode at any point.

It is a prototype calculator with an AI who contained a glitch of multiple dramatic personalities. He is as big as a normal calculator and does run on four double A batteries. He doesn't have any physical strength, his main weapon is his words to deeply confuse and annoy others.

Age: 22
Bio: After being the youngest to ever be accepted in the most advanced medical science university in The western hemisphere at the age of 15, he was briefly expelled after experimenting genetics using stolen equipment. Several even occurred around the city of his residence, Alex managed to obtain the DNA of a monster that had been wrecking the city and convert it into a serum that changes the human chemical structure and after several doses he managed to gain the ability of telekinesis and Pyrokinesis. Eventually he converted his body to fire after getting severely burned in an explosion and shortly disappeared. After several months Alex reappeared with only the ability of telekinesis.

Is this ok to be used?

This. I mean if you guys are so ADD ridden you can't wait an extra week or so then you shouldn't bother entering. This way people have a chance to actually see it and decide what they want to do. Create some hype for it, make a thread in the GF or something asking for submissions. You can easily weed out the shit ones and it'll be a much more interesting tournament.

Just because the 'regulars' have posted doesn't mean we should cut it off now and deny newcomers. I was new last time and it took me a little while to come up with an idea but it was ok because the thread was open for a decent amount of time. I was really close to not entering this one because of the same reason. Luckily I did manage to decide on one but I'm sure others out there might be having the same problems. Also you never know if a really good artist comes back from a holiday in the last week and submits an awesome character.

This is my character. His name is Charlie Matthew, more commonly knows as Baby Gangster, he sometimes calls himself Luciano Donatto. He is a 3-year-old kid who became a mobster after playing the Godfather on his brothers Wii. He carries around a 6 caliber water gun, and a pack of chocolate smokes. A. It must be pretty disheartening to hear "You've got my vote so far" being said to your opponent halfway through a game. Any kind of feed back, negative to you, or complimentary is not nice when your trying hard, just makes the task seem a lot more difficult. Stuff like that can be taken to PM/MSN.

B. Its post boosting. I noticed last year there were a few people just going around putting in a well done here, and a good luck there. Not actually saying anything, but just for the sake of saying it. Thats against the forum rules.

Post boosting and vote declaring aside, the thread comments were handy for telling people when and how they've screwed up, if they have. Replies like 'Yeah that's funny but the art could use some work' would encourage people to pick up the slack and put some more effort in, and maybe come back to win the round. I think I've seen that in previous years where someone has improved because people said it sucked.

I find the commentary colourful. It's rarely ever "nice job, can't wait for the next attack" - and if it is, bring on the banhammer. Usually the comments are "hahaha I especially liked (specific joke)," which allows us to point out the things that stood out for each of us individually. Without comments this is destined to be the most boring comic tournament in Explosm history, I guarantee it. More often than not, the tournament is more than just the attacks by the competitors, it's also the interesting banter that the peanut gallery provides. Without it, heckling and awful puns included, this wouldn't be Explosm anymore.

This is coming from a person that received nothing short of deconstructive criticism in tourneys past: Keep the commentary from other members.

Sure, some (if not most) of it was far from relevant to the preceding battle, even verging being downright inflammatory. But that was one of the longing positive attributes of the Tourney.

It's what seperated the weak-willed from the hardened. If you have a tough enough backbone (given from being at Explosm for a long-time) then the comments from fellow members shouldn't phase you.

It was one of my favorite actions hovering around the thread upon posting a comic, just to see what someone would say about it (be it positive or negative).

Honestly, you're juicing all the fun out of the tourney and making it less of a fun aspect, and more linear (i.e. you post comic, wait for opponent's comic, then your comic).

It's too formulaic, to the point that the spontenaiety is being subtracted from the initial formula that made the damn tourney so damn special.

If I wanted to do a simple 'collaborative comic', I'd just go into work....I came here because It's a break from all that. A real chance for people to influence the preceding comic based on their (positive or negative) comments.

I vote a resounding nay on this proposition.

Its not just this it's everything, the entire structure of the tournament. Last year's was much better. I read the thread, I know they had a week, but are we on a fucking schedule here? Does this comic need to be finished at a certain time?

yeah, no one was interested in this one at all. I felt a bit disappointed.
I think the main reason for that is the interest not just for comic tournaments or showcase has fallen (although it has significantly), but just interest in the forums in general.

As much as people hated it, Fan Art was the sole reason a lot people visited Showcase and were spurred to try their hand at drawing funny shit. So no Fan Art, either people didn't see the comic tournament, or didn't feel like they should join.

Oh well.

The reason why this tournament didn't get any views is because half-way through people started fucking with time-limits. People got sick having to wait up to 5-7 days for people to post comics. But I finished third, which makes this tournament way better then the earlier three. I also think that rule about not being able to post in the battle threads sort of messed it up. Sure, you don't go and interupt a boxing game, but this isn't fucking boxing, it's violent cartoons. Anyway, congrats Happy for the victory, it's a shame though, I wanted to battle your character.

And I'm totally against waiting two-years. I only think that'll make people even sicker of the thing. And for Fan-Art. I posted allot of comics in the latest thread, but hardly any other "classic" artists did. If there's a new comic thread we'll need harder rules and instead of complaining, you should've taken part innit wile it still was active, hardly anyone posted in the thread.
