I can't think of anything because everything I like is awesome.

But maybe my love of low quality b-level movies counts. Especially if it's really mindless but cool looking with cliched bad assery.

Bring It On, Mean Girls, Stick It, most rom-coms. Jesus Christ Superstar.

And I'm not sure why one would feel guilty about Quills, that is an excellent film, to be honest, if a little indulgent.

Dude, Moulin Rouge and Love Actually aren't guilty pleasures...just because they're romantic.

PS I Love You, Jonny English, The Holiday, Marley & Me, BBC versions of Jane Austen books.

- Bring It On
- Clueless
- Most remakes even though the originals are blatantly better (Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Oceans Eleven, The Italian Job, Twelve Monkeys, Halloween, King Kong etc.)
- Sequels to films that maybe should have been left alone (various Nightmare on Elmstreet, Friday the 13th, Alien, and Halloween sequels) and star wars prequels

A walk to remember, Spirited away.

You think we could do this in reverse to? like movies you didn't like that achieved major acceptance as a great movie amongst most people?

If so, I didn't think Borat was all that good.

Twelve Monkeys was a remake? Well, there's something I didn't know before.

And I thought Aliens was meant to easily hold up to the original? Haven't seen it mind...

This is hard for me, because I don't actually know what movies would qualify as "guilty pleasures" and what I just get flak for because my friends are boring and stupid. But here's a couple;

Shakespeare in Love - Don't understand why I get made fun of for this. Great acting, genuinely funny, plus it's basically another version of the classic "Romeo and Juliet"

Girl, Interrupted - Great movie, I really relate a lot to the protagonist. My friends think it's boring and 'girly'.

Oh, and apparently it's not cool to like the new Charlie and the Chocolate factory, even though I think the new one is leaps and bounds better than the original. But then again that's pretty much how it is with a lot of remakes. It's cool to be retro.

Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, I really don't consider those guilty at all. They're some of the most popular and loved movies/books ever.

Well no, not really. I wasn't really thinking when I posted, 12 Monkeys was based on this really short, really weird film (if you can call it that) called La Jetee.

Also Aliens is good, the following sequels not so much.

I liked "Paul Blart - Mall Cop" and I actually enjoy a few of those "filler" comedies that get put out. They may not be classics or anything special, but I like 'em for a cheap laugh and those times you just wanna go to the movies and that's all you have to choose from.

Stealth. I loved it mostly because of the planes and the dogfight scene was probably one of the best I've seen. Can't remember much other than that. I generally like anything that makes me laugh, no matter how dumb/cheesy it is.

Oh, I enjoyed Cloverfield a ton, but I'm not sure if it is really a guilty pleasure.

Also, LotR and SW are awesome movie series.

More like the original is just cooler. Sorry.

You're wrong.

The only reason to like the original is because of Gene Wilder. But when you pit Gene Wilder against Johnny Depp, there is no victor. They both know the insides and outs of wacky characters. Thus, the argument comes down to the kid, and lets face it, the new kid kicks infinitely more ass than that creepy fucker from the original. You know, the one with the hair?

If I had to choose between

or

I'm gonna go with the one who doesn't plan on stalking me all day so he can tie me up in my bed and start cutting me up, limb by limb, to make stuffing me into garbage bags easier so he can throw me out of his boat named the Slice of Life.

Chill out. I didn't even bring up the original until I was asked about it. I still think 12 Monkeys counts considering it's basically just a heavily glorified action movie, even if you don't consider it a remake, which I suppose is fair enough.

I also love most things involving Hugh Grant.

Pretty sure it's not pretentious to call a film made with the basic premise of an earlier film a 'remake', even more sure it's more pretentious to show how much you know about the original in the course of a discussion and absolutely positive that makes you a hypocrite.

I love shrek, Tarantula, all the Star Trek films, the Star Wars prequel trilogy (apart from Jar Jar fucking Binks) and Love Actually. Only really ashamed of Love Actually and even then just barely (It's a great film fuck you all).

It's really more the fact that in no way should 12 Monkeys be considered a guilty pleasure, or even be compared to the original at all in terms of 'better-ness'.

No, the old one sucked. It was boring and sleep inducing. I wouldn't say the newer one was spectacular, but it was at least watchable thanks to Depp's character.

And there's nothing cool about the Oompa Loompas in either movie.

Quadros
07-07-2009, 3:04 AM
Are you retarded, by any chance? The Oompa Loompas from the first film have become a famous, much loved piece of pop culture and were absolutely amazing and therefore strike both the subjective and objective tests of awesome, meaning that even if you think they're not it just makes you WRONG. And Gene Wilder is and always will be the best Willy Wonka. Now stop with this absurd line of argument before I'm forced to take a glue gun and shut your eyes closed forever so you can never form another ridiculous 'opinion'.

I don't mind Hugh Grant, he's just a bit of a one-dimensional git. He's pretty good in About a Boy though, and Bridget Jones' Diary.

And yeah, growing up in a household with 4 females meant I was exposed to the BBC adaptation with irritating frequency. I'm come to appreciate it, though, it's a damn fine period drama. That film version with Keira Knightley was an abomination, though.

Also jumping on the 'original is best' bandwagon re: Charlie and the Chocolate factory.
