I propose that we do a contest similar to Explosm Idol, except with rap songs.

Discuss.

I remember we did something like that before, and I made an arse of myself.

Was it a contest tho? I am pretty sure we wrote our own for that.

This would be already written songs.

Could be anything, I think it has potential. The range in the genre is VERY large.

I think this is a brilliant idea and I'd be happy to help run this if you want. So people, put in this thread any ideas you have and if you wanna enter.

CnGy
07-17-2009, 9:00 AM
Butchering it is why it would be fun!

I'm totally down to have part of it be self-written though, because that would be just as funny.

Beastie boys for sure, I'm talking REAL rap. Of course, there's really no point in doing a rap song that's, well, just pop music disguised as rap.

CnGy
07-17-2009, 12:23 PM
I DEMAND both original and unoriginal material to be a part of this contest.

It is key, because they are two very different things.

I figure we could have different categories: old school, hip-hop, etc

I also think it's a good idea that all contestants, for their first entry, will do an acapella, just a verse or two.

This will help in doing the matchup process, and also will help avoid no shows.

SourChicken

CnGy
07-17-2009, 1:39 PM
Well you guys know each other better than I know you most likely. So everyone can help run it in the sense that if you know someone on here who would do it who doesn't know, or just reminding people in general who have already said they would.

I'll participate for fun but I would get a lot more enjoyment out of being a judge.

Raxo you want to? Alrighty. To be fair tho, you probably shouldn't be a judge and a participant.

How many judges do we need? I'd say 3, to break a tie etc.

RaxoZellet

Also I think it should be written raps and not already made ones. Everyone would get the same beat, and each week would be a new one.

Could we also make it to where the people rapping have to stick one line we give them into the rap?

They should at least some sort of metronome in their ear or something so they don't get way off.

I made an absolutely epic beat. (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4hnmj3lyynj)

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 11:37 AM
I'm currently writing lyrics to that beat. That beat is epic.

Anyways, if we do have rounds, then they should be themed. Like "talk about how your city is the best" or "talk about dicks."

Or, it might just be fun to kinda do a collaboration, like someone makes a beat, we all record individual parts, and then put them together to get Wu Tang shit.

CnGy
07-18-2009, 12:41 PM
Definitely yes for the themes, I'm thinking

Round One- "Let's get shit started" using exetra's first beat, as it sounds like a GETTING PUMPED type of thing. Think Ruff Ryder's anthem but with more lyrics obviously.

Round Two- Beastie Boys or some other awesome thing that people would want to do. doing an unoriginal song is important, shows how the contestant interprets the genre in general, understanding of rhythym. Feel free to alter it/speed it up/slow it down.

People should start posting ideas for this, with links to the instrumentals.

Round Three- Freestyle- For this you would NOT be allowed to write the lyrics before hand.

Round Four- Finale?

HELP ME I AM NOT GOOD AT DOING THIS.

I think we should definitely do the required line as well but I'm not sure for what rounds that would work best.

All contestants do of course have to do the aforementioned acapella verse before they will be considered entered.

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 12:58 PM
Round three could be kinda suspect
It would have to be based on the honor rule, and hoping that people don't cheat.

CnGy
07-18-2009, 1:03 PM

Entries for that round would be video, you wear a blind fold.

Probably no fold, I guess, but a video would definitely let you know if they're reading it or not.

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 1:05 PM
Good point.
There should also be a diss round or something, where people are paired up and have to diss one another.
That's probably already be suggested.

CnGy
07-18-2009, 1:20 PM
Diss round fo sho. I guess if no one wants to do the beastie boys we can have that round turn into that.

Haha, or the diss round could be you have to turn the lyrics into a diss of that person.

Something. Diss is definitely gonna be in it.

I will wait to start this until there are more people though. What do we have now like 5 or 6 people that want to do it?

Benjaman
07-18-2009, 2:21 PM
Well, it's not like this is a sign up thread. We would make a solid plan, and then one of us makes a sign up thread and that would attract more people to join.

Also, why not just have CnGy AND Tranny be judges? Is that really problematic? That way if someone can't judge we still have 3 scores.

Dartful_Dawger
07-18-2009, 2:40 PM
round two theme seems kinda dumb.
maybe remix a classic rap song, but not just rap one.

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 3:01 PM
I didn't want to participate. Mostly because I have shit equipment and can't freestyle.

I'd be willing to guest judge :D

EDIT: Also, instead of giving scores for the participants, maybe some criticism and feedback, and then they either get voted off American Idol style, or the judges converse through PMs and eliminate the ones who sucked.

Just spitballing.

CnGy
07-18-2009, 4:16 PM
I'm open to anything guys I just want to make sure it is not stupid so people will want to do it.

I agree it seems as if no one wants to do an already written song.

So nix that I guess :'(

We'll make that round the diss round.

How many rounds should there be?

Judges will of course converse through PMs.

Scores and reviews will be given.

Score break down I'm thinking: Skill level (Meter, annunciation, etc), Style (do you put a new spin on it or do you sound like your average bloke), and Entertainment value?

RaxoZellet
07-18-2009, 5:01 PM
I feel like a written song is a good thing to put in. A good way to showcase different styles and interpretations. And this would be the easy round. we need an easy round.

But A diss round sounds awesome.

Maybe the finale can be a self written song based on a given theme. Like previously mentioned "Best city" or "Life with Women" or something like that.

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 5:14 PM
How would the diss round be done?
The most obvious way would be for judges to pair participants up, but it might be interesting to see who the competitors want to diss for themselves.

BKS
07-18-2009, 5:15 PM
This sounds like that White Rapper show they had on MTV/VH1.

I think we should have a themed rap, a dis round, a freestyle round, and a group rap (4 on 4 or something)

How would the diss round be done?

1 vs All. Dis everyone

SourChicken
07-18-2009, 5:20 PM
The thing with the group rap would be that there are only 8 entries, and so it would have to be round one.

paraskeet
07-18-2009, 8:13 PM
For the round 1, it should be directed towards everyone, then for the diss round maybe assign a competitor to each participant.

BKS
07-19-2009, 12:34 AM
Are we doing elimination or points based off of place?

IE: Best rap in round one gets X points, 2nd best gets Y, third gets Z.

Benjaman
07-19-2009, 1:37 AM
I don't know. I'd prefer points off of place, but CnGy never seems to be on MSN so we can't discuss anything.

Tweek
07-19-2009, 1:48 AM
Isn't that what this thread is for?

Benjaman
07-19-2009, 1:59 AM
I dunno, I just feel more comfortable just kind of bouncing ideas off of him, but whatever. I'd just think of an example round and then run it by him, but I guess I can use the thread.

Okay, so a number of participants would be given a song or a beat. They have a certain length of time to record and perform it, and then they submit it and whatnot. The judges score them by skill, how well they performed; style, how into the part they were, and then entertainment value, for the rest. Points for all the judges are added up, and the top scorer(s) get 5 points for 1st place, 2 highest would get 4, 3rd would be 3, 4th would be 2, and everyone else would get 1 point.

Now, there's still unanswered questions:

We need topics. Dissing rounds, rounds that you have to put a certain line into your rap, already written songs, freestyle, and etc are all good, but we can still brainstorm more ideas.

How long should rounds be?

Is giving 1st place 5 points, 2nd 4, 3rd 3 and etc good? Maybe a different scoring system?

also, GO WAP BATTOL

exetra
07-19-2009, 6:35 AM
You guys are making this way too fucking complicated.

It just needs to be a diss tournament because that's what a rap battle is, essentially.

Tweek
07-19-2009, 6:37 AM
Yeah I'm with exetra, I was even thinking up rhymes and shit to totally verbally own everyone.

Benjaman
07-19-2009, 2:03 PM
How about:

Okay, so a number of participants would be entered in the contest. They'd have to be an even number, so we can pair them up with someone each round. Each participant has a certain length of time to record and perform a diss rap to their partner, and then they submit it and their partner diss raps back. Now, we could have the judges score them by skill and then rank and etc until the end, or we can have a tourney. The winning disser would go on in a bracket and etc.

Personally, I think if we have alot of people (12+) participating, we should do a tourney. If not, we'd just do a point scaling system.

So, if you guys want to do just a rap dissing competition, I'll make the sign up thread to see how many people are going to be in this.

Metalhead636

Benjaman
07-19-2009, 3:19 PM
Well, how about you give me input. Do you guys want a DISSING RAP COMPETITION (with other elements), or a RAP COMPETITION (with a little dissing).

SourChicken
07-19-2009, 4:06 PM
Rap Battles are almost always one guy dissing another guy via hip hop. I say a dissing rap competition (with other elements) would be the easiest, and then the judges decide who wins the battle, then the winner moves on, tournament-style.

Jeftris
07-19-2009, 4:11 PM
Yeah, I agree with Sourchicken, dissing rap competition would be way better.

CnGy
07-19-2009, 5:34 PM
I want a battle, but I think the first round should seriously be freestyle acapella or whatever, not a versus, so we can match people up semi-evenly in the next (first real) battle round.

Benjaman
07-19-2009, 5:47 PM
That's a good idea. Do you guys want me to write up the sign up thread?

Benjaman

I was wondering, for the freestyle with no former lyrics, you could do it in Ventrilo.

Yeah, this is a good idea, but I know people like Exetra don't have a good connection to the server and it may be detrimental. If we did that, what we'd do is have one person come in, they set up if they need, then we give them a topic. Everyone's topic would be different. They'd have a minute to prepare, then they'd perform it. Does that sound good for the first round only?

Of course, we can always decide that after sign ups.

CnGy
07-19-2009, 6:34 PM
Yay signups!

TY for doing it, I'm lazy. I had this idea and did not realize that I would be expected to be like, on top of things. Haha.

Looks good.

SourChicken
07-19-2009, 9:35 PM
I'm pretty fucking excited to see this go down.

EDIT:
By the way, I would discourage the use of rhyming dictionaries. Most of the words are really stupid. They're good for a jumping off point if you're really stuck, but if you want to use words that sound similar but don't rhyme exactly then you're out of luck.

Allen
07-20-2009, 4:17 AM
Shit. If we're going to do this completely on dissing, I really need to figure out a lot more words that rhyme with "faggot".

Rap Battles are almost always one guy dissing another guy via hip hop.

Things we learned from 8-Mile

CnGy
07-20-2009, 9:21 AM
Tone and rhythm are far more important than rhyming.

How the fuck is it a rap battle if you dont write your own shit?

I think a video posted or just text and then a reply back from someone else and so on and so forth is the best method of going about this.

Real rap battles are all about thinking on your feet and using words as tools.

That's freestyle rap battles. And while yes, that's the most well known, we have the handicap of being on the internet and in different timezones with other obligations we need to tend to.

Rappers battle with written shit also, mix tapes and diss tracks and whatnot. So shut up. it's fine.

No, no, you have misunderstood me. Of course they write their own shit, as in they compose it, they create it from their awesome intellects or whatever. What I was suggesting was them to post a written version of the lyrics previously created, just in case someone went "what the fuck did he say at 2:30?!" My only complaint about this entire thing is everyone's mishaps with microphones and sickness and whatnot. Besides that, this is probably the best competition to ever grace the forums.

Sickness is no excuse. I did mine late night because the next day I was getting my wisdom teeth out.

I can't take that standing up so I spit it as I sit
Caught me in the act, calling bullshit
Your rap's a show stoper
And you say you're prim and proper
Hasta la vista baby get to the choppa

Im no Schwartzenegger
On my knees I'm a begger
I bleed as I pleade I just can't pull it together

I'll suck your dick for coke
Don't laugh it aint a joke
Once blew a dog for a cig to smoke
You say you're prim and proper
All suave and posh
The way you're looking down on me, oh my gosh

You say you don't swear and I act like I care
I gotta grow some balls and some real facial hair
Your prim, your proper, your every girls dream
Your lyrics so tight, like my ass at fourteen

But guess what man, thats where the fun ends
You be the wife to my Ross, bitch get outta Friends
My voice was deep and it gave ya the bends
You thought I'd play nice but it was all pretends

Now I've got something nifty that I think is pretty sweet
I robbed it like a thrifty and stole the presidential seat
I wont veto your logic, that bills gonna pass
Then I'll take my new balls and ram em up your ass

I've got some new ground rules that I want you to follow
Always say please and thank me when you swallow
You do as I say and what I say you do
Now shut the fuck up and suck me till ya blue

You're a prim and proper rapper
You're a prim and proper rapper
You're my prim and proper rapper
Tell me what ya bitch says when my nuts slap her

It was definitely an excuse on my part, as I completely lost my voice for a few days.

I still wanna do one though. I might throw one together just for the hell of it.
