New movie from the woman that made Point Break.
I saw it yesterday. Had to go out of town to do so. It didn't get a huge release. But it's fucking stellar. It gave me the same feelings Platoon did. It is pretty much Platoon set in Iraq. If you have the opportunity, check it out. One of the best movies I've seen all year.
Anyone else seen it?
I saw it on the intronet a while back. It was great but I didn't go "holy fucking shit amazing" after seeing it. I mean it's definitely better than good, but it didn't have that "wow" factor that makes movies go from "good" to "great" or "great" to "amazing."
I'd give it an 8/10 though. I can see how some people would find it pretty amazing.

I loved this movie. I was in tears for a lot of it. I really believe that some people can get addicted to war.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys war movies. Even though it's a different kind of action.

I saw it the day it come out in Houston and it's the best film I've seen from 2009. Period.

I think I'm missing something. I wanted to like the movie, I really did. But it only gets like a 7.5/10 from me. A lot of stuff that happened in the movie amounted to nothing overall, which was a bit disappointing. I loved the Iraq setting and the realistic aspect of it (down to the camerawork) though. And stellar performance from Jeremy Renner, too.
Probably my favorite scene was either the intro scene, the sniper fight or, when Sgt James, the expert bomb expert in Iraq, comes home and is in the supermarket, baffled by which cereal he's supposed to get. (at the end)
Also, in retrospect, it's pretty funny how all the famous 'big-name' actors in the movie either die or disappear nearly after a maximum of 5 minutes of screentime. Guy Pearce at the beginning, Ralph Fiennes during the sniper fight, and the guy (doctor?) who played the Ice Truck Killer in Dexter S1. Evangeline Lilly was there for no more than a couple minutes and barely had any lines, and I didn't even see David Morse.

But isn't that life? Isn't that war? The war in Iraq in particular.
And yeah. Random Ralph Fiennes threw me off, but delighted me.

This looks frickin' awesome, but I would have had to drive over an hour and a half just to get to a theatre that was showing it. Now, I don't even know if there are still theatres near me that are showing it, sadly.

I hate to bump an old thread, but i just watched it on bootleg today. It was an awesome movie. They perfected the suspense and the emotions of the soldiers in those type of situations. I loved the set up, it more or less strayed from the normal action movie norm. They could have easily made it cheesy with stupid soundtracks, but all of that was nearly perfected.
Hopefully this can Underdog the American Oscars like it did in the UK.

Yeah I heard that it's tearing it up in the UK, I also hope it rolls through the Oscars here stateside.

It deserves it. Most movies that go outside of the box and are well directed usually get the Oscar. but sometimes movies get screwed over. Like Chicago the musical beating out Gangs of New York.

I saw this a bit over a week ago. I was right up the front of the cinema which really irked me, because the session was sold out.
This really is a terrific movie, though. It's amazing how they made the first bomb explosion seriously beautiful. The slow-motion shots of the ground fragmenting and rising up gave me shivers, it was so cool. The acting was excellent, and it actually seemed realistic. Between this movie and Generation Kill, I'm glad to see these current wars being fought being given real and true representations on the screen.
I think this will win the Oscar. I would hope anything other than Avatar and The Blind Side will, really. I'm undecided as to whether this or Up In The Air was my favourite movie of last year (I think it might be a tie, simply because they both represent such different, yet similarly brilliant in their own way, kinds of films and filmmaking). That said, I've yet to see A Single Man and by all accounts it is fantastic too.

Saw this months ago, I liked it, kinda came out of the blue, didn't hear anything about it then saw a trailer and thought 'what the hell was that?', tracked it down and watched it.
The effects were great and the good ol' realism thing was awesome, I really love most movies that don't follow Hollywood plot of Introduction - Obstacle - Love interest - Overcome obstacle - tough, character defining choice - happy ending. Loved the effect of the rust on that car when the bomb blew up, and it was true to the way that you can die from the concussion wave, where at that distance Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel would have been doing a slow motion walk instead of an 'oh shit' run.
Didn't really give me the moral impact that it was reaching for though, I suppose I've watched a lot of documentaries with interviews with soldiers who have had tear-jerking accounts of not being able to reintegrate back into society. Good movie though.
