View Full Version : A College thread

pretty vague topic, you say?
Well this is the general forum, faggot, so it fits.

I'm going to college in two days, so people that have gone, tell me what to expect, or funny stories, or sad stories. Tell me is there anything I should bring that I probably didn't think about. Tell me if there's anyway to maintain my excessive masturbation habit while living with a roommate. Should I pledge a fraternity? Is it what they make it out to be in those moving pictures?

Fuckk, just discuss anything and everything college related.

But don't talk about getting into college, or finding the right college, or stupid shit like that. You can throw a rock in any direction and chances are you'll hit a university of some sort. Here we discuss what happens after your dumbass finds a college and pursues a life of knowledge and higher learning and shit.

Bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. Also, if you're in residence, expect retards to pull the fire alarm at all hours, especially in the winter.

I am forced to assume that sticking shit in your ears every night and sleeping on them would eventually cause some damage.

Also, books are fucking expensive.

One of the most important pieces of advice I was given was to keep your door open while you're in the room. It keeps an open enviroment and it helps you meet new people.

That being said, I walked in on my roommate's and their girlfriends. probably 3 or 4 times because they didn't close the door.

It sounds like you are already doing better than I did when I was in college. I lived in my parents home and commuted the first two years. I missed out on everything. I switched campuses in my third year, and things started to get funner at that time. I was in a pretty hardcore program for my degree, so I never really realized how fun college could be until after I had graduated. I moved back home, then spent almost every weekend at the same college I attended for the first two years. Thats when I got to experience college life, and it was incredibly like the movies. I guess my advice would be to not be so serious, enjoy it while you're there. It's the last big hurrah before you're supposed to be a grown-up. Do some stupid shit and don't regret it.

I do an online course. Boy, have I had some wacky times.

I should have dropped out before the census date so I wouldn't owe money but I didn't. If I somehow manage to actually get shit done and pass, I'll be keen to transfer. If not, I'll drop out whenever, as long as I think I can convince my dad I gave it a good shot but I'm not ready for higher study yet.

The last advice I need is to not be serious. I doubt I will ever have that problem.
I have no fucking idea what to study.
I'm thinking majoring in English, at least for the first year, (because it's an easy, slacker major) Then transferring to a more prestigious school and changing my major to whatever I actually want it to be, which I haven't figured out.

It doesn't really matter what you want to study the first year or two, that is when you do all the Gen Ed requirements that every single degree has.

Just relax and have a good time. I went into my first year of college really nervous about various things, but as long as you chill and don't let yourself get overwhelmed, you'll be fine. As for the fraternity stuff, if you had asked me a year ago about my opinion of frats, you would have recieved a rather negative response, however, I found a great frat on my campus, and I really love it. Just go with what you enjoy/can tolerate.

Residence at the school I'm going to is only about $7000 per year, and about $2000 of that is designated for me to buy food.

It's alright I guess. I never really got all the hype, even from people who are current students. All the 'college life' stuff is usually described as just hanging out with people and going to parties, of which being a student is not a prerequisite. A lot of people go in looking just for that and end up doing terrible in their classes. Usually the people who don't have to work to pay for anything themselves.

But for SODA... you realize these people are mostly moving, right? If they don't live on campus they still have to pay rent.

Best advice you'll ever get is to keep your door propped open the first couple of weeks of school. Unless you're sleeping or naked or something (Then keep the windows wide open, too). Be super extra sickeningly friendly and talk to EVERYONE. Join clubs and shit like that and don't worry too much about your classes. When I graduated high school, the teachers tried to scare the shit out of everyone saying that college classes were so difficult and that we wouldn't be babied like we were in high school. FALSE: I've never been so babied in my life.
You have a year or two to decide what you want to do, so take it lightly and enjoy your first year! Oh, and about things you should bring that no one thinks of... first-aid type stuff, and a thermometer. I ended up having to share a thermometer with everyone on my floor freshman year. I still have to share it with my flat-mates.

The first week is the only time that asking for someone's number isn't considered a sexual advance. Take advantage of this and build a filofax of bitches.

Also, while heavy drinking is awesome, it can also be useful. Get fucked with your immediate neighbours asap so that you can know who is a fucking liability and who s fucking awesome in the state of quasi-consciousness you'll be spending nine tenths on your next 4 years in. Racists, thugs, pussies and psychopathic maniacs are all much easier to spot after 10 sambukas in a row.

And get good at pool or table football if you're not already. It makes you friends and they'll respect you straight off the bat if you whip their asses.

Two things my friends are doing I'm very not into are community college and online college. With community college, I just wouldn't like spending time at a school learning the environment and meeting all these new people, then jump into another midway and feel like, "the new guy" or something. Same goes for transferring, just not interested.

And online college would be fucking horrible because a) I want the whole gay experience of going to college, b) I want to work with hands-on equipment and get some real professional experience, and c) I would feel like I'm never doing anything, never getting out of the house or nothing, stuck in one place in my life. Also I'd get sidetracked too easily.

When I lived on campus, it was about 800$ a month, but I got kicked out for christmas holiday, and had to completely move out 24 hours after my last exam... even though you paid for the whole month. Plus I had to pay about 3000$ for a meal plan, which was disgusting food.

When I lived off campus, my rent was about 350$, and I could have my pets and a kitchen and didn't have to share a bathroom with 10 people.

The residence experience was definitely not worth the money.

For me personally, I'd say do live on campus. I lived on campus all four years and generally found it enjoyable. A lot of it depends on where you go to school, though. I went to a small private school in a rich suburb. Paying for an apartment would have required more roommates without adding much in the way of space. Plus, I just liked having those people so close by. Off-campus people were kind of separated even if they weren't that far away physically. You also got a meal plan if you lived on campus. The food wasn't great, but I'm a shitty cook and it was cheaper than eating out all the time. It really depends on the atmosphere at your college.
I'd also suggest meeting everyone at the beginning. Everyone is nervous and shit at the beginning. You have more leeway for looking like an idiot then than you will later. And if you look like an idiot, but are outgoing, people will generally like you.
I would also suggest taking a lot of classes at first. This kind of depends on how smart you are/how good at school. But, if you're fairly smart, you can half-ass your way through several low level gen-eds and still have a good amount of time to party. Then, when you take harder classes later, where 3 credits can make a big difference, you can take fewer classes.
@Abbey--Freshman week was great. I even helped with it my later years of school. Loved moving in the new freshman girls every year.

I bought my book for my Differential Equations class for $130. I bring it home and don't open it until today after class so I knew I got the right book and everything. When I do fucking open it I realize it's not actually a book but a bunch of loose leaf pieces of paper with a cover. I think to myself "what the fuck is this shit?" I look over on the binding and notice that it says "Binder Version." Well that certainly explains it. I don't know who the Hell would want 600 loose leaf pieces of paper to stick in a binder, but who am I to judge? So I go back to the store to return it. I explain to them I didn't realize this was a Binder Version and I would much rather have an actual fucking book. They inform me that Binder Versions were the only ones they have.

RAAAAAAAAAGE. There's so many pages it can't even fucking fit in a binder. I'm going to have to split the book up. Who kind of a faggot would want a Binder Version in the first place? AND WHY THE FUCK DID THEY ONLY ORDER BINDER VERSIONS?! It's not like it was just that store: every fucking bookstore on campus only has the binder versions. All five of them. The professor in charge of this course must have sent an order for only Binder Versions. What a dick.

I could order another one online from a store off campus, but I can't get a refund for the one I bought because I broke the plastic seal.

Ugh same. My g.p.a is absolute shit, its like a 2.7 or 2.9. My SAT scores are good though so I got to take advantage of those and write a banging essay.

Looking at schools now sucks though because of that- trying to find one I can get in to with my grades and is still a respectable school. You guys should've taken AP or IB classes, as much shit as they give about being so much harder they're no different at all really, or at least not for me. I took a shitload of AP classes, and got Cs and Bs in them, which translate to Bs and As in a regular class. So my GPA never dropped below 3.5 and at highest was 4.2 or around there.

Not to mention through AP tests I had 12 college hours (15 is a whole semester's worth) over and done with. So I saved around 1200 dollars worth of classes also.

Keep an eye on the parties. My college once organised one that had a two euro fee to get in, and you got a whole package with sex toys! I mean decent handcuffs, lube, a vibrator, condoms... Good shit.

Also, know which classes you can skip. If you skip one, don't assume everyone'll be running to you offering you to copy from their notes. Ask politely in advance, make up a reason if needed, and pay back the person letting you copy especially if it happens more than once. Also, allow others to copy from your notes from time to time, but not constantly - you'll end up like this one girl in my class who had to go to every class and make a ton of copies for people.

Don't miss the newbie-stuff. As a lot of people said, it's easiest to get to know people when everyone feels like an idiot.
Save up the class-skipping for special occasions. Most people skip more and more during the year (at least here) so if you start with granny's birthday as a reason you will end up with a reasonable amount of skipping. If you start with "nah, too tired" in the second week you will end up failing - like I did last semester.

i'm planning on going to a junior college because i want to continue playing football, but i have the grades and and requirements to get into a UC, but if i go to a jr college and then transfer do my ap tests still count?

I don't know, AP credit differ from school to school, even if they're in the same system. Check the university website, or ask one of their admissions counselours.

Really? So you are paying ridiculous fees to get wasted? That's interesting. Where I come from you don't have to pay nearly as much as anyone of you pays for a cheap community college and lousy meals and most of us still want to actually be educated while paying for education.
I am not saying you shouldn't have fun or go to parties, just don't waste your money and time.

I think we should listen to this guy, please wombat please enlighten us on what we should do.

Yeah, seems so. Sorry. I only came here to see how fast a badass with a rolling panda avatar like you can make a Greys-Anatomy-watching, animalloving law student cry. You bad, bad man.

I think you need to pass your classes to be considered a law student. Otherwise you are just a dumbass.

I've been accepted but I have until the end of this week to fill out all of the forms.
Clearing is the shit! Even if you mess up your grades during high school, they wont care they'll take you either way.
So right now I'm hoping that there are still accomodations available if not i'm screwed.
All I can think of right now are not the parties but how much i really don't want to fuck this up. Still gonna get crunk every weekend though.

I only knew one group of chicks that stayed on campus at uni. They all lived in the same unit and had the lamest parties ever. All of them acted like fucking virgins. I still snagged one for the long term at the end of uni though :P.

You know, that might be true. Thanks for telling me that, without your help I never would have noticed.
Since we are talking of the sweet time in college, which one kicked you out so that you had to become a panda impersonator?

Dude, going through Clearing is really not great at all, I checked the positions for Clearing at my uni and there were about 5 vacancies on 3 obscure courses.

Just Got my loan assessed and -with Halls fee deducted- I'll be on £20 a week. Woop woop, time to get a part-time job.

I got into the Uni I wanted and the course I've been willing to study, so it really just depends on the Uni or your luck.
