View Full Version : What are Explosm's views on Recycling?

Just curious :)
It's a valid question, and we are all competant intellectuals here.
Do you think it's a waste of time, or do you think we could actually be on to something?

Explosm's good at recycling. All the old threads get recycled all the time. :fmita:
On a serious note, I used to recycle all the time at my old house. The rubbish people do green bins one week (for rubbish/garbage) and the silver bins (for recycling) in the next, so it was a subtle way of saying "recycle more if you don't want your bin full after a few days, faggot!".
Nowadays at where I'm at we don't have a green bin so there's no need. I'm still conditioned to fold cardboard boxes flat though.

We recycle our cans, bottles, tins, newspapers etc. I live in a pretty green household.
I used to recycle and shit. Used to gather cans in bags and take them to the recycling place every couple of weeks. Not anymore though. Too lazy.

The base I'm stationed at pushes it pretty strong, so I do when I can. Though trying to sort everything out after my can's been full for a week is annoying, so there's a good chance it'll just all end up in the nearest dumpster.

When I'm in the dorm, I recycle all the time since they have recycle bins at the end of the hall and it's actually easier to just get rid of bottles and cans that way than to have to keep buying trash bags for the trash can in our room.
But at home, I never do.

I try to recycle whatever I can. I know it doesn't make much of a difference though, the world waited too long to take up recycling.

I just throw my shit in the trash, regardless of what it is. Until they make a sorting robot that rips open my trash bags and goes through the useless shit I throw away, I will not care about recycling.
I don't recycle anything because for anything other than aluminum cans it takes more energy to create a new item from recycled materials than it takes to pump out a brand new one.
I don't really think about it anymore, it's just routine.

The garbage company gave us a bin for recyling so we just use that. And it's usually full every week.

My biggest issue with environmental policy is waste. We produce a nearly unimaginable amount of waste constantly. A lot of it comes from the stupidest things, little conveniences that aren't worth it. Or inconveniences, like extensive plastic packaging. Plastic is the worst. It kills species, reduces food supplies for all species- including humans- and contaminates our waters, among other things. This leads to all sorts of problems, including things like increased androgenism and various birth defects. Kind of a big deal.
So yeah, I try to recycle. I've always recycled newspapers and aluminum cans, pretty much all of them we have for waste. Lately I've started recycling more things because our city has made it mandatory. They dropped off a 96 gallon container on wheels for every household, which is pretty ridiculous for some people, and said they'd pick it up Thursday. Two Thursdays have passed now without them taking ours. This place is a shithole in a lot of ways, administrative process included. So I'm not surprised they messed this idea up, too. Apparently we're doing it to comply with a statewide (California) mandate.

My family recycles quite a bit. I don't do it so much where I'm living now. Mostly I just need to figure out what day they pick stuff up here and set out all the stuff I've been saving up. But, when I lived with my parents we were pretty good about it. We even had to pack the stuff up and drive it to a recycling place. No pick up like with the trash.

Untill they make a robot to look around the US and throw away the retarded ones, I will not care about americans.
But really, I think recycling is a great way of using our garbage to make something useful, instead of throwing it in a a landfill to rot for years and cause pollution. Recycling also decreases greenhouse gas emission that contributes to global warming, which is a good thing.
I disagree with it on an personal level.

Truth.
It started with good intentions then they found out it did more harm than good, but now there is an agenda and an industry to uphold so everyone keeps their mouths shut.
Even knowing this, I recycle like everyone else does because there's a bin with a yellow lid out the front of my house.

I recycle all of my bottles and cans because I get 5 cents per can/bottle :smug:
Also in high school every friday all of the classes would bring their recycling bins to the main foyer and I'd help sort through all of the stuff (bottles, office paper, newspaper, etc.) It was a pretty annoying task and people often tried to recycle their used tissues.

The energy cost is a nice quip to throw out every once in a while... but the effects of landfills and the cost of dealing with the trash needs to be factored in before it actually means anything.

I agree with this comment the most. You could replace americans with any country though. It applies globally.

Recycling is mostly beneficial but there are some forms which use large amounts of energy recycle certain types of material. I can't remember specificly which materials though.
I recycle everything I can and am actually earning a living in the environmental industry. I promote this stuff on a daily basis as a part of my work (along with every other environmental issue imaginable).

We have to recycle, they threaten us with raising our rent if we don't. But it's pretty well organized and therefore easy.
I don't recycle because that's what the man wants me to do.
Where I come it's a pain in the ass to recycle. You have to deliver all your crap to some place far away that recycles it. We dont have seperate bins for paper or glass or whatever so the way it works here is that if it fits in the bag thats where it goes. Although if we did have seperate bins and they were collected regularly I would use them so therefore my view on recycling is that it is a good idea it just isnt really done where I am.

I think recycling is the answer, but I also think americans are lazy.
Guys, america was the only country who decided not to join the u.n's plan for globalized recycling. And since america is the country with most garbage, we are all doomed.
It's not about energy, although I can see how that is an issue, it's about reducing material waste.
I, for one, am against it. It's all a concerted effort by communist Green parties to enable some sort of Frankenstein's monster weapons technology which will be used against the peace loving capitalists like myself.

I put forth the opinion that the fact of the average temperatures of the planet steadily rising provides an excellent opportunity for pornography to be marketed utilizing this concept, such as advertising statements that the planet just keeps getting hotter. Hotter in this cause having a dichotomous meaning of the temperature issues and the widely recognized use in regards to physical attractiveness or sexually oriented stimuli.

Right but global temps have risen historicly
and went back down in cycles do it's not like humans are the reason for global warming. Also urban heat sink effect proves that temps arn't going up as much ad everyone thinks.

Perhaps, and I've heard arguments that global dimming counteracts it (though with its own set of problems). While this has happened before, it has never happened in so sudden of a change, that's the real difference. Based on my readings, humans are not the only cause, but we are strongly contributing. And further, this does not change the undeniable fact that it's getting hot out there. Tawny Funnel takes it to the street in an end-of-life as we know it sex romp. Get some lotion and whole lot of towels when you go to watch Tawny engage in the craziest and hottest sex adventures ever seen. She'll go up north to cool off, just to heat it up going down on some eskimos. 'Environmental Pounding II' is available on DVD or direct download today.

He means that measurements can be misinterpreted depending on where they're taken, if they are then applied to the planet as a whole.

I recycle, my family recycles, my friends recycle... honestly here it's cheaper and easier to just recycle what you can than try and stuff it in that tiny garbage bin that they give you.
From what I've noticed overall, we Oregonians tend to be proud of our parks/forests, and other natural resources... and will happily recycle if that means keeping our state from becoming a shithole garbage dump like southern California, or New Jersey.
Although obviously there are still a lot of idiots who don't give a fuck as well.

A well designed recycling program will generally make sure most people at least put in some effort.
It sounds like some states in america have shit recycling programs. Australia is pretty varied in the quality of their recycling programs. Where I am now it is OK but other parts of the country have no recycling programs or incentives at all.

I don't think energy use is the point. Refuse and waste sit somewhere in a dump, the point is reusing resources we've already extracted.
Exactly. Now, I'm not entirely sure what some of you mean specifically when you say 'energy', but as far as I know 'energy' can come from abundant and sometimes renewable sources like nuclear, wind, water, and solar power. The point to recycling is that there's a much more limited supply of the materials we use to make things... so while it may be a bit more expensive and slightly damaging now to recycle, it will be much more damaging later if we don't.
While you may need to clear 50 acres of land to establish a power source for recycling... you will need at least that much if not more for your nasty ass landfill, your facilities all over the earth for extraction of non-renewable resources, etc.
Overall though, the bottom line is that there are just too damn many people on this planet using to damn much shit. And the more little fucking brats you cunts pop out, the more damage we do as a species. So honestly, I think the 'greenest' thing anyone can is to not have children.

Can't be arsed to recycle myself. I kind of just leave the tins on the side and let my mum recycle them. I really don't give a shit if the world is ruined because of this. Personally, i'd like to say "I destroyed the world". The only thing that pisses me off is that they're practically forcing you to recycle. "BE GREEN. BE GREEN NOW!"
